What you were earning in 2010 adjusted for inflation..

In 2010 I was on 24k
A few moves and promotions later I'm now on 37k
Quite reasonable progression I thought.

But according to this my 24k in 2010 is now worth over 39k - I'm worse off than I was as young 20something

I knew wages hadn't kept up with inflation but this is mad.

What would yours be?

I was a doctoral student in 2010 so I had a tax-free stipend rather than a wage.

My stipend in 2010 was £18,500 which is £30,349 today.

My wage today is £95,000 so I'm coming out well.

Freezylap · 26/04/2023 16:29

I was thinking about this just this week. I feel poorer now than I did in 2010 but adjusted for inflation I am earning £10k more. I suppose I have more outgoings now with kids and a bigger house, but I don’t actually earn a huge amount more money.

I was on about £17.5K full time back in 2010 and I'm a bit shocked to see this would be nearly £29K now!

Matilda1981 · 26/04/2023 16:31

I was earning £27k which is £44k now - now earning £60k on 30 hours a week so I’m definitely better off!

Redebs · 26/04/2023 16:32

£33k then, should be £54k now.
Teaching has not kept pace with inflation

Bigpinktrain · 26/04/2023 16:34

Childminder then, childminder now…I think I need to adjust my fees to keep up 😳

Freezylap · 26/04/2023 16:36

Something else to take into account is the changing tax bands. How much would you have kept if your salary in 2010? Personal allowances were lower.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 26/04/2023 16:36

I was probably on the same as you in 2010, I'm not on £39k now so I'm definitely a net loser in the inflation game. That's even with a promotion and return to full time hours.

WelshCakes1 · 26/04/2023 16:37

I've just asked an old collegue and the top of the level (like a banding) I was on when I was earning 24k in 2010 now is £28,500....

gosh, my £8k starting salary would be 21k now. (way before 2010!)

SpringMermaid987 · 26/04/2023 16:39

Depressingly my level now is £10k less than it should be then but not surprising when tied to government pay deals

Absolutely. This is criminal. Bands frozen for another FIVE YEARS! Shocking

HeidiUpTheMountain · 26/04/2023 16:41

Mine is depressing - been at the same grade in my ALPB since then, and my £36k then should be £59k now. Thanks to ‘austerity’ and years of pay freezes and tiny rises, I’m only making £42k. This is the reality of the public sector - our salaries are used by governments to control public spending. It’s great fun.

SpringMermaid987 · 26/04/2023 16:42

Crikey if I put it in for 2005 I’m down £20k joys of Gov. Pay deals no wonder folk are striking.

My first proper job in 2003 was £13,600.

I did a sat mornings overtime to push my take home over £1k.

Adjusted for inflation I'd be on 27.5k and bringing home £1,800

I'm doing ok: earning £20k more than the calculator says I should be. But I've made a point of changing jobs to try and increase my wage. I get very anxious when my earnings stagnate.

MidnightMeltdown · 26/04/2023 16:43

I was earning 27k which would 44k now. Fortunately, I am now earning more than 44k.

In was in my first full time job in 2010 though, so I would hope that I'd have progressed a bit since then!

Yes, but the personal allowance has risen massively over the past decade or so, far more than wage/price inflation.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 26/04/2023 16:44

In 2010 I had just started working as a teaching assistant on £19000 pro rata. That’s would be over £31000 today. A new TA actually would earn £21000 pro rata today. SHIT! Needless to say, I’m no longer a TA.

feejee · 26/04/2023 16:48

Ive totally gone backwards, was on £37k which would have been £61.5k now...But i ended up very ill physically and mentally with the stress. Happier now, but sadly I now only earn just over half of what I earnt then. Ah well.

Season0fTheWitch · 26/04/2023 16:49

This is interesting. DH was on 250k in 2010, which would be 410k now. He's on less than that but has moved to a much higher role and had numerous additions to his CV and training. It's the sort of role where he could be earning at the high end of 6 figures with 15+ years of experience!

Almahart · 26/04/2023 16:51

So depressing. I put in 2003, which was the last time I worked full time before having children. I earned £45k and was pretty comfortable. Adjusted for inflation that would be £91k today.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 26/04/2023 16:53

I looked recently to compare my pre children/ pre credit crunch salary (2008) to now. I was really shocked at what my 2008 salary was inflated to today’s money - no wonder I could spend whatever I liked pre children! Today I’m on 30% less than I was in 2008 (taking inflation into account).

That’s partly because I made a sideways move to a new area, I don’t know what it would be now if I hadn’t changed jobs. Though I have more responsibility in my current role. But also in 2008 I’d reached the top of the range for my level, then with the credit crunch recession they decreased starting pay and new-promotion pay for everyone, so I was off the top of the pay range, and I had no (or maybe teeny tiny) pay rises from 2008 to when I left in 2015. Private sector, it’s not just public sector where pay has been squeezed.

yakkyok · 26/04/2023 16:58

salaries have been hugely deflated in most industries since the 08 crash.

plus tax bands have been frozen
