What you were earning in 2010 adjusted for inflation..

In 2010 I was on 24k
A few moves and promotions later I'm now on 37k
Quite reasonable progression I thought.

But according to this my 24k in 2010 is now worth over 39k - I'm worse off than I was as young 20something

I knew wages hadn't kept up with inflation but this is mad.

What would yours be?

also house prices have rocketed

wrinkleintime · 26/04/2023 17:02

Yep, it feels like your salary is going up because the number has gone up. Reality is, in most cases it's not even keeping pace with inflation.

I'm now in a management position with much more responsibility than I had in 2010, but adjusted for inflation, my pay is about the same as when I was much more junior😞 It sucks.

WelshCakes1 · 26/04/2023 17:08

I don't think the problem is the private sector has had larger increases (my 24k being case in point as the same job now pays 29.5k). But in the private sector there is the freedom to move around. All my main pay increases have been moving companies, which isn't an option available to some public sector (NHS being the obvious one)

I'm in the same line of work and I'm being paid 20k less than if my wage had gone up with inflation. Depressing.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 26/04/2023 17:15

Interesting! I'm earning 10k more. I was a teaching assistant though, the pay is horrific. I wonder how much it's gone up by now

Hercisback · 26/04/2023 17:17

£24k teacher.
Would be £42k now.
With experience and a TLR I'm barely above that.

This is why were striking.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 26/04/2023 17:30

I only earn more because of being more experienced. The equivalent roles aren't paying as much now.

Findyourneutralspace · 26/04/2023 17:35

How depressing. My 24,500 would have been just over £40k. I’ve changed jobs and had a promotion and I’m on £31,000.

mrsblueskyeye · 26/04/2023 17:44

In 2010 I was earning £19k. Still in same job. I now earn £22k. Had it kept up with inflation I would be on just over £31k.

Guess what I do ?

Yep, I'm one of those overpaid, WHF civil service scroungers (bet the Daily Mail won't print THAT!)

AwkwardPaws27 · 26/04/2023 17:44

I think a better comparison is your take home pay, and the difference is even starker due to tax etc (& that website is comparing the buying power, not gross salaries).

In 2010 my take home after pension was about £1350; the equivalent buying power today would be £2215.

My actual take home is £1895 (& will soon drop as I'm going to 80% of FT after mat leave).

Neurodiversitydoctor · 26/04/2023 17:53

Year 5/6 junior doctor then, that salary was for 3/4 time as well.

Newly qualified consultants earn £82,000 full time now.....

I am on a bit more

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/04/2023 18:27

I don't remember how much I actually earned in 2010 but I'm in a similar role , same pay scale . I've seen things saying that I've lost out about 20% with salary increase not keeping in line with inflation .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/04/2023 18:27

I'm in an admin role - public service

WeAreBorg · 26/04/2023 18:30

This is the most depressing link I have clicked on in a while! I appear to have had a 30K pay cut despite being much more senior now. Brill

hairdresserbreakup · 26/04/2023 18:33

In 2008 (when I was last employed - been freelance since then) I was in an 8b NHS non-clinical role role earning about £50k. According to the calculator that's about £85k now. I don't make anything like that now, and I know 8b pay scale certainly isn't that much.

DragonflyLady · 26/04/2023 18:33

In 2010 I worked in education and was on £11k part time permanent contract which I topped up with hourly paid temporary contracts. I was made redundant in 2021 and was still on £11k but the hourly paid opportunities had long gone and the 2021 equivalent of the £11k was about £14.7k.

afterdropshock · 26/04/2023 18:55

Are things really that much more expensive? I didn't feel very well off in 2010.

MrsAmaretto · 26/04/2023 19:10

This is shocking! I was in local government at officer level earning £32k. The job is still advertised at the same but according to this should be 52k!

I’ve moved to a different profession but still public sector. Manage a team of 9 and earn £42k today…… :( No wonder I voted to strike.

lavenderlou · 26/04/2023 19:16

Earned £36,000 in 2010 as a teacher on the Upper Pay Scale. Now earn 43,000 as a teacher on the Upper Pay Scale so considerably worse off in real terms.

spanieleyes · 26/04/2023 19:24

I was on £33000 in 2010 , which is worth £54,000 now, which is what I earn. However, I've also gone from class teacher to Head in the same time! So rather more responsibility for no more pay😭

Doyouthinktheyknow · 26/04/2023 19:36

I’m a nurse, was band 5 in 2010 working part time 30 hours and on roughly £26000.

I’m basically earning the same now but working at band 7 and full time. Have a fuck load more responsibility and stress.

That is depressing!

thespy · 26/04/2023 19:57

I wish I hadn't read this. I couldn't do 2010 as wasn't actually working then. My salary before kids in 2004 was 90k which apparently would be equivalent of 182k today. I gave it all up like a mug. So actually 0 today. <weeps>.

Hotvimto3 · 26/04/2023 20:03

More than i am now

Calmisthemantra · 26/04/2023 20:16

Teacher
£37k in 2010 should be over £56k now. In reality I'm a much more senior position, responsible for whole school strategic level support and on £41k

I am striking. We can't recruit, we can't get TA's, SEN system isn't fit for purpose

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 26/04/2023 20:17

Hmm. My graduate salary in 1996 was 14,500 which that calculator says is worth £34,800 today. The BOE inflation calculator says it's worth £27,100 which seems more likely
https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/inflation-calculator

Also, I paid 26% of that in tax and NI. It would only be 17% (of 27,100) today.
