£3.75 for a coffee

Just a flat white, is this normal? I live I the countryside, mostly WFH now.

I've just come to a local café for a change of scenery, and can't believe how expensive just a cup of coffee is now!

Black americano here £3-3.20. As a treat I sometimes buy a latte costing £3.20-3.6 around here (only buy it when it's £3.20/30.

dontgobaconmyheart · 26/04/2023 10:24

I suppose it depends where you live. To me it sounds roughly what I'd expect to pay from a coffee shop, a few pence more maybe but there or thereabouts.

I think in the current situation if this is an independent business then what can they do other than put prices up. Electricity and business rates are very high. If most people are calling in to sit with a £3.75 coffee then there's not much in it for them in terms of daily takings. It's always been significantly cheaper to have a hot drink at home and that still hasn't changed so presumably the enjoyment and the premium is having it elsewhere.

If you can afford it (and if not then there's nothing wrong with that either) and enjoyed it I think I'd let it slide and go back.

Normal, coffee is expensive.
I pay £4.95 for a venti from Starbucks

Cadburysucks · 26/04/2023 10:25

The Costa machine in a large sainsburys is pretty good value, a regular flat white, pastry and a substantial sandwich for 3.50 in a meal deal. I got used to making nice coffee at home during lockdown. I hate spending good money on coffee as the taste can vary a lot and I have not been impressed.

Whiterose23 · 26/04/2023 10:25

I paid £3.45 for a medium latte yesterday at costa

You aren't paying for the coffee. You are paying the wages of someone to serve you and its price for the use of a table in a heated, lighted room for 30 minutes, plus 20% VAT. Its expensive, but so is the business.

A couple of years back, someone calculated the full overheads of a prime location Starbucks as 17p.

Let's quadruple that for inflation and double it again for a independent without big buying power. Still only £1.36.

Davros · 26/04/2023 10:28

I don't drink coffee but DH says the best is McDonald's or ikea. Not much help on many Hugh streets 🤷‍♀️

FrenchandSaunders · 26/04/2023 10:29

You can get a bottle of wine in Aldi for that!

dramalynn · 26/04/2023 10:31

3.40-3.70 for a standard size coffee here. That's Prêt, Léon, Costa, Starbucks. I don't think the expensive, though I drink too much takeaway coffee and it all adds up!

LuluBlakey1 · 26/04/2023 10:35

It's towards the top end but pretty common. I know things cost more- ingredients, energy, rent, wages - but I'd like to see the profit margin on that. I feel increasingly we are being exploited by every single bit of the business world.

LumpySpaceGoddess · 26/04/2023 10:35

Sounds normal to me, it’s always a nice surprise when I find a cafe that sells coffee for under £3!

toastofthetown · 26/04/2023 10:37

A flat white in my local coffee shop/bakery is £3.20. The coffee comes from a local roaster and is always well made. I live in a small town with a busy high street for reference. The coffee shop is always packed.

Even worse when it's tea! 90% mark-up for a tea bag and hot(tish) water.

Totally agree - McDonalds does the best coffee! ☕

I won’t buy tea in a shop for that reason. I’m not paying £3 for a teabag and some hot water! At least if I have a cappuccino it’s made with milk which costs money, not water which is free out of the tap!

TomatoSandwiches · 26/04/2023 10:42

Buy yourself a bag of beans for £10 - £12 per kg a grinder, cafetiere a good flask and make your own, you can take that anywhere you can walk, probably get a better view as well.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 26/04/2023 10:44

That's steep IMO. Best flat whites here in fairly wnaky places where the baristas have tattooed sleeves and asymmetrical haircuts are £2.90-3.30.

CheeseLouisePlease · 26/04/2023 10:45

I came on to complain about tea. It’s usually crap weak tea as well, water not hot enough as well. At least with coffee they seem to care about quality and there’s a bit of effort into making it.

Iminthemoneylife · 26/04/2023 10:45

Normal for me in the NE.

CoffeePricing · 26/04/2023 10:48

Agree about tea, I'd never get tea when out. With coffee, no matter what I try at home, I can't get it to taste as good and the milk to be as frothy so at least there's value in buying it from somewhere

I quite like supermarket coffee. Some supermarkets have nice cafes attached, which are just a cafe not a restaurant. They’re exactly the same as Starbucks etc except for the prices. I used to take my laptop to Starbucks to work and have a coffee, but now I drive to Morrisons cafe because it’s more affordable and otherwise identical, even the same style of chairs.

Helenloveslee4eva · 26/04/2023 10:49

Smugly sitting in my camper van drinking a quality French press coffee after a dog walk for this very reason . I know it’s doing the coffee shop out of business but frankly their coffee is rubbish and I’d end up buying choc / cake I shouldn’t eat 😂.

But you could look at it as you're not just paying for the teabag and water. There's all the other expenses involved for the business, including service.

sashagabadon · 26/04/2023 10:52

Joe and the juice smoothie are basically £7!
I think £3-£4 mark for coffees is standard now

Yeah but I can have coffee for the same price and it’s proper ingredients like milk and syrup and made by a barista, not just a cup of hot water with a teabag plopped on the side.
