Which is the best 'own brand' tomato ketchup?

We used to get Heinz but way too expensive now.

Usually would get Aldi own brand, but the Aldi near us has been out of stock for several weeks.

Tried the Tesco cheapy one - and it was indescribably terrible - and had to go straight in the bin!

M&S is good

Madamecastafiore · 25/04/2023 05:55

Yes M&S, made in GB too and loads cheaper. All their sauces are good, their salad cream is less vinegary than Heinz and thicker too.

Waitrose is our favourite. I’ve swapped to that permanently now. We were not keen on m and s one.

Aldi , Bramwells. I decant it into a Heinz ketchup bottle and my two teens happily don’t know the difference and the are ketchup experts

littleblackcat27 · 25/04/2023 06:00

thanks - will try M and S one - as Aldi one not available for past few weeks.

Asdas own is the only one my teens will use

fedupofthisshite · 25/04/2023 07:00

Do any of the own brands do a no-added-sugar one, out of curiosity?

User158349890 · 25/04/2023 07:11

Waitrose essentials I think is best, I have also tried Tesco and M&S, which I don't like as much, DH won't eat the M&S one

Coconutty2 · 25/04/2023 07:14

We used to always buy Heinz and Bramwells and then I read about Lidls own scoring top in a taste test. We've been buying Lidls for at least 3 years now and really like it. Prior to that we'd tried Tesco's own (not even the cheapest but 'nicer' one) it went straight in bin amongst others.

Waitrose do a reduced sugar and salt one, you would probably need to compare ingredients to Heinz

Slimjimtobe · 25/04/2023 07:15

Aldi’s been out of stock for some time here. We like the m&s or Morrisons own brand

Thank you!

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 25/04/2023 07:24

I like sainsburys one. Tescos is disgusting same with Asda.

Newgolddream70 · 25/04/2023 07:29

I like the M&S one - it's more tomatoey and less sweet but my DS8 prefers Sainsbury's own.

RandomMess · 25/04/2023 07:30

Lidl's own Batts switched DH after the taste test was published.

ThoseDamnCrows · 25/04/2023 07:44

I bought the M&S one last week, 90p compared to £3.40 for Heinz!
I would say it tastes nothing like Heinz though, it's not as sweet and has a sharper tang, we think it's more tomato-ey.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/04/2023 07:50

I think this is something you have to try yourself as it is so subjective.

Already on this thread we've had 'Asda is the only one we use' vs 'Asda is disgusting', likewise M&S.

I don't like the Heinz versions of the 'main' products (beans and soup, we don't really buy ketchup as we're a brown sauce household, where we use the Aldi version, which is very similar to HP and about a third of the price) so I'm not interested in finding which brand is most like Heinz, but obviously this is the priority for others.

It's also good to remember that just because something is different, it doesn't mean it's less nice, or worse quality. Plus in blind taste tests, a lot of people actively prefer another brand to Heinz, that is often much cheaper.

Finally, when trying to convince DC and partners who 'could only possibly eat Heinz' perhaps frame the question as 'which do you prefer, Heinz or this other cheaper brand plus £x leftover to spend on something else' because that's what this boils down to.

Unless you have so much money that you never have to think about what you spend, it could be a noticeable benefit to cut down your beans, soup and ketchup bill by about 70% and free up more money for something else you'd like to have.

Aldi or lidl

the sainsburys one is vile

VioletCharlotte · 25/04/2023 08:20

DS smothers everything in ketchup and d goes through a bottle a week. The only supermarket brand he likes is Asda.

We get the Morrisons one, which is pretty good. Sometimes, B&M have Heinz on cheap and I get one, there's one in the fridge at the moment.

Topbird29 · 25/04/2023 08:59

My fussy boys quite like the polish one sold in tesco- can't remember the brand name, but is just over £1 a bottle. Also used to use sainsburys own brand (before we moved and no longer round the corner.)

Topbird29 · 25/04/2023 09:02

And hellmans ketchup is good too.

ODFOx · 25/04/2023 09:04

Asda own brand low salt and sugar is like seasoned tomato purée; really thick and tomatoey. The nearest to home made that I've found. Better than the brands imo.

ODFOx · 25/04/2023 09:06

Topbird29 · 25/04/2023 09:02

And hellmans ketchup is good too.

And yet we really don't like it. It is such a subjective thing, for something that we only eat one teaspoon at a time!!
