Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Gloucester

Frith2013 · 24/04/2023 19:02

... Spartan and bleak

@Treesandsheepeverywhere were you stricken in Strichen?

It would fit your username well but it's really not a usual tourist destination because, well, there's nothing there

😅, I certainly was.
Again recommended so had high hopes.

littlestrawberryhat · 24/04/2023 19:04

Oh and Dublin. Wouldn't bother going back again

JaffaCake70 · 24/04/2023 19:06

My Husband and I recently went to Bridlington for the weekend. On the photo's and on Dickinson's Real Deal (don't judge!) it had looked quite pretty in a British Seaside kind of way.

What a dump! It was a real ghost town, very poor, lots of closed down shops, the street our B&B was on was full of run down rough looking houses (the b&b itself was clean and tidy, nice enough).

We went for a walk down the beach but it rained (just to add to our misery) so we went to search for a decent pub, we ended up in Wetherspoons as it was the best of a (very bad) lot.

On the Saturday morning my Husband woke up and said "I don't like it here", I said "I'm so glad you said that, let's go home". We packed up and went home a day early.

Bridlington is grim, don't visit.

We live ‘over the tops’ from Hebden Bridge and visit probably once a month for the Thursday market. Lovely bacon sandwiches and coffee from a cafe in the square for about £14 so not out of the ordinary expensive. Good cheese and bread stall in the market. I can’t comment on the toilets but everyone seems very friendly and there are lots of interesting shops. It’s possible to do a short drive up the hill to Heptonstall and see Sylvia Plath’s grave.

£14 for a bacon sandwich and a coffee! 😳 £14?!😳 I hope that was for at least two people!

Thanks @FrostyFifi and @greenel for Edinburgh recommendations, I’m making a list! 😘

JaffaCake70 · 24/04/2023 19:07

Also, Loch Lomond.

BORING

WonderingWanda · 24/04/2023 19:08

It was a while ago so I know there are new tall buildings to visit in NYC but The Empire State Building was a let down. The view and space on The Top of the Rock was much nicer.

Also the Statue of Liberty, I'd expected something much larger.

JaffaCake70 · 24/04/2023 19:10

Also, as a bibliophile, I visited Hay on Wye....

CRAP

EllenLRipley · 24/04/2023 12:09

Also Hebden Bridge!

Agreed!

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/04/2023 19:12

Oh op Yeovil IS grey depressing and just miserable
same as Chard - boooring

I quite like Axminster tho ( Rics cafe is the place to go ) and Bridport is ok for a market town

di2004 · 24/04/2023 19:15

Aberystwyth... just depressing. Stayed in a rural property in Llanilar and it stank of dogs 😫 Conwy on the other hand was enjoyable.

Friendofdennis · 24/04/2023 15:31

I have to disagree about Aberystwyth I was at a writing festival there on Saturday and the town was very interesting. Lots of nice cafes and architecture. Little squares of delightful houses hidden away and the sea front is great

I'm glad to read that - we last spent a rainy weekend there during summer 2020 and it was really suffering midst lockdown with many eateries closed but with the chairs and tables still inside and park unkempt .

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/04/2023 19:19

I didn’t get Brighton until I experienced it in the sunshine with live music and the bars on the beach front full of cool people, great vibe. My DH is from there and FIL lives there so we spend a bit of time there.

Brighton. XH raved about it but I didn't think it was anything special. Very overcrowded. We walked for ages to get to some restaurant he thought was great and it was just very ordinary food kept warm under lights.

Brighton is great but like all towns and cities it pays to look it up and find out about the best bits before you go, like the Laines and North Laines, Kemp Town which is more arty. Some stunning architecture and history. The theatre has pre London shows and every show we went to there would be a coterie of well known actors in the pub next door afterwards. Stunning library. Some great vegan and vegetarian restaurants as well as one off unusual eateries. The Brighton Pavilion absolutely worth a visit. Perhaps being a Londoner and Brighton being the choice of day trips Im biased....but loved it so much I moved there.

Softoprider · 24/04/2023 12:51

We visited 'The Deep' in Hull at Easter.

Oh dear. It stank of fish and stale sweat from the masses of dirty unwashed scruffy people. We had to visit the toilets to keep washing our hands. Some of the exhibits were interactive and grubby would be an understatement.
The penguin pool was small and horrid. The cafe .. oh my days.. I gipped when we walked past. The slop they served on that day was apparently Lasagne. Families were sitting tucking into plates of it. The smell was something I will never forget.

I know it was a sea attraction but why did it have to smell as bad as that?

There were times when I walked past people who smelled so bad of sweat I thought they were doing it on purpose.
The shop was OK though

😂😂😂

I'm really disappointed by the negative feedback for Bath. I'm due to go in late summer but I'm now having second thoughts.

Please don’t be put off, go and see what it is like for yourself. It would be boring if we all liked the same thing. It may be the most beautiful city you’ve ever visited.

babyproblems · 24/04/2023 19:21

Yes.. Warwick castle. Went as a big family and stayed onsite in the knights village little hut things. Last year. Cost my dad a small fortune. Booked baby cot in advance. No baby cot there when we arrived. Had to ring reception and then when it did come it had no mattress! So that was the first minor hiccup.. then the castle was shite. Wonderful building but the exhibit was really poor. No pushchairs allowed inside AT ALL. They allow wheelchairs reluctantly. You have to leave your pushchair outside by the railings in the rain, no padlock nothing. So then had to carry 14 kg child and all our bags. It was horrible. I was expecting brilliant Tudor stuff. It was more like a pantomime experience. Wouldn’t go back.

EggbertHeartsTina · 24/04/2023 19:24

Kidzania! Awful awful place

HeartandSeoul · 24/04/2023 19:26

Katherine1985
During the last Christmas market two women asked me directions - they’d just arrived and wanted brunch before going to the market. I walked them to a really nice square away from the hordes on the main drag. They were really happy with that

Kingsmead Sqaure, by any chance?

HeartandSeoul · 24/04/2023 19:26

Square!

Durham

That gets my vote, too.

JaffaCake70 · 24/04/2023 19:28

cire · 24/04/2023 12:57

Abersoch

I'd forgotten to wear my burgundy cords and had the audacity to have a small child in a pushchair

The people there are so stuck up and rude too!

My Sister has a bungalow there, I can go for free whenever I want.

I'd rather not.

Berlinlover · 24/04/2023 19:29

Chicago - very disappointing.

Tappetytap · 24/04/2023 19:31

Does anyone ever actually leave the Eden project feeling like they want to save the environment? Or did we all just feel robbed blind? 😂
