Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

Petra was amazing. Just walk. You have to walk to see the other good bits.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 17:14

Agde, France - we we were sold it as a pretty little port town on the mouth of the Canal Du Midi. An ideal day excusion from where we were staying near Montpellier. It was mainly closed and the few places that were open were a bit tatty and sad.

We decided to walk down to the beach - it was dominated by a very seedy looking resort for naked people.

2/10

I'm really disappointed by the negative feedback for Bath. I'm due to go in late summer but I'm now having second thoughts.

Ilovetea33 · 24/04/2023 17:16

I'm reassured to see other people say Cambridge. I'd never been and I'd felt maybe I should have made more of an effort, but it was so icy cold with a bitter wind that when it turned out that King's College was closed to visitors (and quite a few other colleges too), I just had a quick look at the town centre (which has the usual shops) and then gave up and went back to the hotel.
On the other hand, I had a lovely big room at the hotel (Graduate Cambridge) and the concert I'd come to see was fabulous.

"God, McDonalds, really? Next to such ancient monuments, that's unbelievably wrong."

And Pizza Hut. And lots and lots of litter blowing in the breeze. Grim.

Not quite next to (I live locally - on a clear day you can see the Giza pyramids from my bedroom balcony).

Yes, there is a fair bit of Cairo in all its scruffiness - including fast food joints - visible from the Giza plateau. It's a living city, not a museum! & a huge proportion of Egypt's income comes from tourism.

If you want to be really outraged by pyramidal doings, there are currently plans afoot to build a triumphal avenue up to them - forcibly re-settling 10s of 1000s of local families 😡.

(& if you want more unspoilt pyramids...pssst...go to Saqqara for spectacular or Dahshur for eerie).

Burley.

Supposedly a lovely witchcraft friendly village with lovely shops selling crystals and whatnot, lovely pubs and a cool vibe.

It was shit.

Tacky souvenir shops selling tumble stones and plastic skulls, no nice pub to eat in and no vibe.

I was so disappointed.

It's not Edinburgh people, it's the stag and hen parties.

Edinburgh is an architectural wonder, full of history and culture, great food, interesting walks and a fantastic place to live. Plus one
Of the world's best festivals every August.

It's just spoiled by the dildo brigade who come to get drunk only. Hopefully they will all move on to York now as the in-place.

They are already here in York in huge repellent numbers - please don’t wish more on us☹️

Funny you should say that about Mill Road….I’ve just moved from there (literally four days ago) and it really is grotty. It’s as if, because it has a reputation for being bohemian and cool, no one dares to say anything different! It’s dirty and tatty with garish shop fronts. The people living there are pretty nice though - it’s very left wing and multicultural.

I know Cambridge very well - but have never heard of Mill Road (the part you’re talking about) as being groovy and alternative. Who told you that?! It was always known as being a bit rough.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/04/2023 17:21

I always found Oxford pretty disappointing. Busy, congested and quite tatty.

I have a friend who lives near there now and she is slowly showing me the nicer parts.

I love the different takes on this thread!!
For my part, I’ve just come back from Paris with my teen ds. We had an amazing time. Didn’t do anything majorly touristy except the Eiffel Tower but mainly just wandered along the river, ate amazing steak frites, chilled in the Tuileries, wandered up to the Sacré Coeur. He was just amazed by the beauty around every corner…….and this is a kid who generally is only interested in gaming online with his mates!

Agreed, Paris is amazing! Architecturally beautiful. Not as vibrant as London but I think it's a special place. I love most French culture so perhaps I'm biased. I really don't understand all the mumsnet hate. Also love Amsterdam!

I went to a zoo recently and all it had was one dog.

Was it a Shih Tzu?

Love it🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm disappointed by how many people are mentioning Bath. It's on my list of places I'd really like to visit.

On thinking about it though, I suspect that I travel with fairly low expectations because I can't think of anywhere that has been a huge let down.

Fine to visit once but I wouldn’t go back

rubadubdubascrubinahottub · 24/04/2023 17:23

Went to Bath and hated it, really strange and unfriendly place.

Disneyblueeyes · 24/04/2023 17:26

@Softoprider been here loads of times. Never experienced anything you say.
Difference of expectations perhaps.

It's an awesome place.

Exaspa · 24/04/2023 17:26

Wimborne Minster. Also Dorset Somerset way. A friend and I went there one afternoon in early summer twenty years ago. We'd hoped for a cream tea. Everything was shut.

And also, Stonehenge. I've never understood why people flock there when there are so many far more impressive prehistoric monuments about the place. Still, if it keeps tourists away from the better circles that's all good in my book...

Everywhere has deteriorated in the last thirteen years in particular though, it's just that now it's pretty much at the point where you can't ignore it or gloss over it any more.

TheaBrandt · 24/04/2023 17:26

What in earth are you Paris haters doing in Paris then?!

We went shopping at Galeries Lafayette
Partied in the 10th with all the youngsters
Monmatre in the sun beautiful
Lois Vuitton gallery in Bois de Boulogne
Vintage shops and mansions in the Marais
cheese and wine / cocktails in little cool paris bars dinner in traditional brasseries
Art in Musee d’orsay
Looking at the sparkly Eiffel Tower

Best City ever.

COPPER3 · 24/04/2023 17:27

Weston Super Mare.

Oxford.

I absolutely adore Bath and Brighton!

Doverdeal · 24/04/2023 17:28

@AskMeMore thanks for that link! I would never known people thought it was that great! I was born here - actually at Mill road hospital- and it was a dump growing up.

Really? Mill Road was considered the quirky alternative bit of Cambridge back in the 90s.

faffadoodledo · 24/04/2023 17:29

Seen a few mentions of Carcassonne and I agree. It looked like a version of the castle in Shrek but not as good.
Exeter - dull dull dull. Likewise my own county town of Truro.
San Francisco - totally underwhelming, and grubby.
Puzzled by mentions of Venice.
And worried about mention of Chelsea, since we have tickets for next month!

nowahousewife · 24/04/2023 17:30

Buxton. What looked like it was once a beautiful town was very run down with a grim high street.
Bristol on the other hand was a lovely surprise.

Hello from York. We've had enough of the Dildo Brigade, thank you very much! Where else can we ship them off to?

Yeovil?? That might liven things up. 😋
