What do you like and not like about where you live?

Sometimes I feel DH is very ungrateful about where we live (he's a Londoner desperate to live there but we can't afford it 🤷🏽‍♀️)

Therefore I'm often thinking about where we live and analysing it more than most people probably do.

Can you make something you like and something you don't like about where you live?

I like the fact we have lots of nature on our doorstep, and don't like that we can't walk to a town.

I like that there is a decent bus service which isn't common outside London. The buses run to the local cities and airport, and they run 24 hours a day with one every 10 minutes in the daytime and every hour from around midnight to 5am.

Don't like the high street, it's miserable and run down, and lots of ahem unsavoury characters hanging around.

Samphiredragonfly · 24/04/2023 06:14

Northern town 12 miles from big northern city.
Likes: reasonable house prices but by no means dirt cheap.
Close to countryside for local walks and an hour and a half drive from the Lakes, Dales etc 20 mins on train to Manchester (but local transport to said station very poor)
Decent secondaries if you make the effort to go to church (no grammars here if that's what floats your boat)
Hates: desolate shit hole of a town centre. Many shops closed down (worst in UK I believe). Beggars at lots of traffic lights, rough sleepers in doorways, druggies seem to have taken over the town centre but council have no money or inclination to sort it out.
A lot of social deprivation but bubbles of affluence. People just look ground down and poor.
No nice coffee shops, or any kind of 'naice' shop. Desperate to move once youngest goes to Uni. Just sick of the bloody grimness.

DeadButDelicious · 24/04/2023 06:30

I like in the north west. Close to the motorways for DH's work, shops, local restaurants and businesses, schools within very easy walking distance, good public transport links, nice green spaces, you don't have to travel all that far to be out in the countryside for instance. It is however becoming run down in areas, traffic can be terrible, a lot of the streets were not designed to cope with 2 or 3 car families and as such they are rammed with cars parked on the pavements and it is getting very expensive to buy.

Cocteautriplet · 24/04/2023 06:31

I live in Barnet and find it a bit meh! It’s very suburban with not much going on in terms of culture. It has good parks and good transport links into central London but lot of the green spaces are golf courses and I don’t like the 1930’s architecture and ubiquitous Mrs Hinch style grey interiors. Our local high street is appalling - lots of fast food and pound shops and estate agents but no longer any bakers, butchers or green grocers. Traffic /pollution is awful especially during rush hour and is likely to get worse as a huge amount of new housing is being built in the area. Give me a rural village any day!

I live in San Francisco. Temperate weather. I only have to turn on the heater 2 months a year. We don’t need air conditioning. I love the summer fog. Flowers year round. Great restaurants. Close to the beach. Skiing, 3-hour drive away. I still think it’s the most beautiful city in the world, but it’s gone into such decline. I hate that I have homeless sleeping in the side yard of my detached house or in front of my garage. Politics is crazy left. We recently voted out 3 school board members and the district attorney. San Francisco has made this once liberal, a conservative. Not leaving yet though.

Therealog · 24/04/2023 07:43

Pro’s- beautiful
busy
near to everything
nice people

cons- small village, everyone knows everyone. I will only ever be mother of, ex wife of here. Gonna move when the kids are grown be free of the shackles and start a relationship. In a boring prison here, although it’s nobody’s fault

dudsville · 24/04/2023 07:49

2 or 3 times a week we get refuse disposal trucks on our street at 6.30/6.45 am. Household is weekly, garden waste and recycling are every other week. They all come at the same time but on different days. Sometimes the lift squeals as well. It's a small thing but it annoys me.

orangetriangle · 24/04/2023 21:18

hate the prices of houses here south east essex youngsters will never be able to buy and the potholes!!

Goodread1 · 24/04/2023 21:31

I live in coastline Town urban area , nearby lovely countryside and two beaches , in S.wales
One particularly well known beach designated officially as one of the best beach in Europe, Pembrey beach.

Also local beach ⛱️ overlooks in distance the Gower ,
Well known Beaches in the Gower for outstanding Beauty and nature 🪴 plant life of speacial interest in certain places...

Also Archeology of interest connected to Gower too.

The town centre area is a somewhat a mixed bag ,

It's been changed in my opinion and locals far too much, and it's spoilt the character of town in the name of progress and the town olde motto, living up or shall I say down to this,

Still Thankfully there is a few olde world buildings left here,

Echobelly · 24/04/2023 21:34

I'm in a boring North London suburb

Bad bits:
Despite not being cheap to live in, downmarket, crummy high street with too many charity shops and bookies (albeit with a couple of decent restaurants)
You can't get a decent sized back garden unless you have over £1m to spend
Parking is pretty terrible on a lot of streets, including ours

Good bits:
We're very near the tube, abput 25 mins in to central London
Almost all the primaries and secondary schools are very good
A lot of parks
You can be in open countryside a short way away
Convenient shops for day to day needs
Our street is actually quite friendly and people generally know a few neighbours

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 24/04/2023 21:35

I like the roundabouts and duel carriageways

I dislike the endless roundabouts and people who don't know how to use duel carriageways.

I am extremely fond of the concrete cows

(Have you guessed where I am yet)

Goodread1 · 24/04/2023 21:37

Also like most Welsh towns there is a Alchol binge drinking social issue and of course missubstance recreational hard drugs social issue too, unfortunately,

Not a great deal of work opportunities for younger people here, unfortunately,
Ambitious younger people tend to want to move away at the nearest opportunity,

TheVanguardSix · 24/04/2023 21:43

I live in Chiswick, West London. I love the green spaces, the river, the fact that I can and do cycle everywhere.

What I dislike? Flight path. It’s intrusive. Schools aren’t great. They’re not bad (primaries are good actually). But the secondary schools are all a bit lacking.
It’s rather boring in some ways. Lots of traffic. People are invisible. I just never ever ever see my neighbours. I’m on a road full of recluses. I’m not an extrovert by any means but honestly, my road/area feels so lonely.

cheapskatemum · 24/04/2023 21:44

Like (love) the beautiful countryside that surrounds us & don't like having to drive to shops.

LadyJ2023 · 24/04/2023 21:45

Love everything about where I live Northumberland beaches 10mins one way hills on my doorstep woods forests, small town quaint coffee shops etc

jennymac31 · 24/04/2023 22:07

@BungalowLil - your comment sums up perfectly how I feel about Bristol.

I'm originally from London so in spite of the traffic and the property prices of Bristol, I can't imagine living anywhere else.

Internationalwomendayheadquarters · 24/04/2023 22:07

I can sunbathe topless in my back garden.

StaringAtTheWater · 24/04/2023 22:13

SW london here

I love:
Hardly ever having to drive
Lots of cycle routes
Amazing choice of restaurants - pretty much every cuisine of the world can be found in London
Museums & galleries on the doorstep
Good selection of parks and playgrounds locally

I hate:
Absence of proper countryside and the fact that when we do drive out of London it takes an hour just to get to the M25
A long drive to the coast
Air pollution
How busy everywhere is
Tiny gardens

We are moving to a large commuter town in the summer which I hope will give us the best of both worlds (easier access to the countryside while still being able to get back to London easily for restaurants, museums etc).

hardyplus · 25/04/2023 00:24

We're in central-ish London, zone 2.

Like: easy access to central London (Oxford Circus 16 mins from my door), Eurostar, mainline trains and airports, 10 min walk to Regent's Park and short bus ride to Hampstead Heath, loads of kids activities, normal amenities nearby like supermarket, doctors, dentist, great schools inc. private, the buzz and busy-ness of the local high street, touristy stuff on my doorstep, excellent sports facilities, the anonymity, excellent work and study options, our workplaces and schools are walking distance. Don't speak to our neighbours which is how I like it. I never bump into anyone I see out and about.

Not like: Housing stock is limited (terraced period homes with open plan living, tiny gardens and too many stairs), local tube is not step-free (painful during the buggy years), dog mess on pavements, homeless/addicts on the local streets, the rain, dockless bikes and scooters blocking pavements, tables and chairs for outside dining cluttering pavements, not having a 'safe place' for courier to leave a parcel as no front garden (used to live in a flat with concierge, now I have to traipse to the Amazon locker to pick them up).

Ramunea · 25/04/2023 00:45

London outskirts here and I enjoy the peace and quiet. I enjoy being close to nature.

downsides; sometimes too quiet. Less diverse. Less options for local things to do. Travelling to meet with friends is a hassle and has to be planned to a T otherwise it could result in an extremely expensive cab ride home.

farahway · 25/04/2023 00:49

I live in Richmond, SW London and absolutely love it. No need for a car, public transport is fantastic and the tow path means a lovely walk or cycle. The river is the biggest pull but the absolute peace and quiet where I live is wonderful. The quiet roads are full of children cycling to school in the morning and our little road has children practising their scootering and blade rolling. Just wish the locals were friendlier (:

CoastalFamily · 25/04/2023 22:52

awakeeveeynight · 24/04/2023 01:46

I live in Northumberland and love the countryside, views, great schools and lovely supportive community.
Hate endless scones in cafes and lack of good takeaways.

Endless scones is my ideal.

StarDolphins · 25/04/2023 23:05

I love….
That I feel very safe in my immediate area & love my neighbours
i love the town centre, great bars & restaurants & coffee shops , lovely Central Park with a huge beautiful lake with boats to hire, ducks all round, lots of greenery
I love that the above park has something great on every weekend - farmers market, fair, festivals, carnivals, I’ve skating & Christmas activities, Easter, Halloween etc always something great on!

i hate…
the car parks through summer are all rammed
i don’t now feel safe to walk home after a night out having previously felt very safe
that there seem to be an influx of foreign men that are very sleazy/make me feel uncomfortable that make strange noises while staring!
that there’s always, always roadworks that cause huge queues!

AgrathaChristie · 25/04/2023 23:09

Like: clean air. Surrounded by 1000s of trees and no industry or cities.
Dislike: Village mentality and there is absolutely nothing to do.

iwantchinese · 25/04/2023 23:19

Like: Not much about the town really but i grew up here and my support is here so i get help with childcare and have a good family around me and a few friends. Although we do have lots of options for takeaways which i guess is a positive 😂 Fairly close to London by train too.

Dislike: There isn't much to do you have to travel to do something fun with the kids other than parks (which some can be abit meh as there are drunks/drug users hanging around), lots of rubbish on the streets which means you see a lot of rats and mice around.

I would move if i could but i just can't give up the support and i think i would be quite lonely to move hours away from everything i know!
