What do you like and not like about where you live?

Sometimes I feel DH is very ungrateful about where we live (he's a Londoner desperate to live there but we can't afford it 🤷🏽‍♀️)

Therefore I'm often thinking about where we live and analysing it more than most people probably do.

Can you make something you like and something you don't like about where you live?

I like the fact we have lots of nature on our doorstep, and don't like that we can't walk to a town.

In terms of general location - yeah, 20 minutes from Belfast, amazing grammar schools and lots of green space.

My actual location?

Lovely big, affordable houses - we're in a 5 bed/4 bathroom detached with garage that was bought for £275k in 2021. However the actual development? Wow. Never have I met such stuck up, entitled people.

I was happier living in my little £66k 3 bed terraced housing estate down the road.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/04/2023 22:07

I/we lived in zone 2 for most of my adult life. I loved that every time I walked down my road and to the local high street I saw someone I knew for a chat even a Mnetter I met at a meet-up when those things happened. The traffic could be hideous.

We moved almost 10 years ago because DH wanted the big, detached, characterful house and garden. I love the house, the drive, the open space, the fact we are the last London phone number and first Surrey postcode and yet so near but yet so far. I love the security, we have gates within a gated, private road. I loathe the fact that although the neighbours are nice, I have spoken to one other person in the road since Christmas.

CrispsnDips · 23/04/2023 22:11

LIKE : can step out of my front door and there is woodland on the left and open countryside on the right - within a few steps

NOT LIKE: boarded up shops in the town centre - some have been derelict for nearly 20 years!

EssexMamisoa · 23/04/2023 22:12

Zone four London on the central line

love: the novelty of everything on my doorstep and so quick to central London (20 mins). Also can get to countryside if I need to easily

dislike: when I go back to my parents (a market town) I realise how peaceful it is there and not here.

Convovulus · 23/04/2023 22:14

I live just outside Greater London. The wider area is nice. I live on a busy road which is probably the least desirable in the area. I'd change that for somewhere more peaceful, but it's nice having lovely green spaces a short walk away and being able to drive a short distance to other nice walks and places. The schools have been fine. My teenagers have a short walk to a station and buses, so can travel around without me needing to be home to drive them.

Emptycrackedcup · 23/04/2023 22:28

Close to everything which is great. Two annoying loud neighbours bad enough it makes me want to move (one with barking dog, other with screaming kid). I hate them

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 23/04/2023 22:33

Like - 20mins from a big city centre with brilliant cultural stuff going on. Really easy just to nip in after work to go to a concert. Under an hour to another great city centre too.
Dislike - Air pollution. Noise pollution. Traffic.

AdoraBell · 23/04/2023 22:35

Plus side - It’s rural, quiet and nothing happens.

Negative side- no shops, cinemas, theatres and general city buzz.

BarelyLiterate · 23/04/2023 22:35

I love the beautiful countryside around the village I live in. I love that my neighbours are cows & sheep. I love that I see the milk tanker visiting the farm across the road. I love the peace & quiet.
I hate the fact that our nearest city, which is around 10 miles away, has declined over the last decade and is now, sadly, a third world shithole.

EustaceTheMonk · 23/04/2023 22:38

Born and brought up in Zone 2 and now in a small market town. Love the space and that we can get anywhere (inc airports) without the slog of crossing/leaving London.

Do I miss London, yes I do (& we've been here 30+ years) but short of winning the lottery and getting a posh flat in Zone 1, I wouldn't go back.

Bearpawk · 23/04/2023 22:38

Like:
Beach, coffee shops, excellent restaurants, frequent buses, gigs, architecture, excellent shopping
Dislikes:
Lack of proper nature within walking distance, excessive homelessness, parking issues, house prices, filthy streets

mexicanandafewdrinks · 23/04/2023 22:41

love the community feel, within 5 mins of 3 fab off licenses, so great being near the British Airways tower!
dont love the influx of vegan restaurants as I love my meat lol x

CoastalFamily · 23/04/2023 23:32

I like being beside the sea and adore the local independent shops and cafes.

I'm not as keen on the lack of trees in the immediate vicinity.

Tintackedsea · 24/04/2023 00:33

Love : one of the most beautiful places in the UK; sea, space and skies; rich cultural heritage; community who care

Hate: cost of living; very few job opportunities; cost of travel

ChevreChase · 24/04/2023 00:50

Beautiful countryside, liberal, arty side to the area (in parts!) and in a very attractive town. Safe, friendly.

It's a bit boring, and sometimes I miss my London life so much I could scream from frustration! It's just the lack of choice, lack of culture, feeling everything is happening so far away.

EstellaHanclay · 24/04/2023 00:53

Love being in zone 1 central London - can walk pretty much anywhere. Neighbours are fab, great mixed community.

Hate the stairs to my flat and having to go south of the river where the transports always shit.

Isoqueen · 24/04/2023 01:34

I’m a Londoner by birth and upbringing and I wouldn’t live anywhere near there if you paid me! I live a a semi rural outer suburb of Melbourne, close to the Yarra Valley and it has everything I want. Friendly people, safe, no litter, no graffiti and lots of activities. The only negative is the lack of public transport which is ok as I have a car but if you don’t it would be an issue.

awakeeveeynight · 24/04/2023 01:46

I live in Northumberland and love the countryside, views, great schools and lovely supportive community.
Hate endless scones in cafes and lack of good takeaways.

Gruf · 24/04/2023 02:54

from London originally, now semi rural. Love the woodland, hills, alternative lifestyle, hippies, local produce, local cafes/pubs, kids playing in the woods/streams. Dislike the potholes and the lost shops, gone bankrupt after covid.

echt · 24/04/2023 03:04

Another Melburnian here. I love the quietness of the bayside suburb I live in, lots of trees, near the beach.

I dislike the destruction of what remains of the natural habitat, the loss of birdlife. Oh, and the fucking endless knocking down and re-building of houses; six very close to me in the last ten years. And the leaflblowers and jet-skis.

Borracha · 24/04/2023 03:15

I love the safety, the multiculturalism, the fact that there’s always something fun to do and the weather for 9 months of the year is glorious.

I don’t like the weather for the other 3 months - 50 degrees is not fun, especially when the kids are on their summer holidays and bouncing off the walls. Even getting in the car on the driveway is hideous - I have to start the car automatically from inside the house and wait for it to cool down otherwise the steering wheel is too hot to touch and the seat belt can burn your skin.

(We are in the UAE)

DeeCeeCherry · 24/04/2023 03:15

I love my street. It's clean quiet pleasant, and most of my neighbours are lovely. In London but a conservation area so there are no high rise/big blocks of flats around here. & It's green, + a park less than 5 minutes walk away.

I hate the town centre, full of rubbish shops. & people just hanging around. But I hardly go there so it's not a huge issue.

suburbophobe · 24/04/2023 03:22

I love that I can walk to the shops, get easily to cultural events, parks nearby, beautiful city centre, good transport links to anywhere and everywhere.

I hate that my city is overrun with tourists. Lockdown did have its advantages in that way.....

suburbophobe · 24/04/2023 03:24

Oh, and I hate that there's no housing left for the younger generation due to being priced out. Or families with kids.

MrsMarkRonson · 24/04/2023 05:57

I live in a city suburb in NZ. Is a nice leafy suburb with great parks, sports facilites, 3 supermarkets within 10 minutes. I love that the schools are great, and the suburb is safe (can walk everywhere fairly safely) and I'm only a 15 minute train ride from the city. I hate that it is so expensive and I will never be able to buy here (unless I win the lottery).
