First races (elite wheelchairs) about to start. Anyone else slobbing on the sofa watching folk exert themselves today?

Oooh, Kiptum in with a chance of breaking the world record!

Wow, not another runner in sight!

tonystarksrighthand · 23/04/2023 12:01

Come on Kiptum

PollyAmour · 23/04/2023 12:03

What do those arm support things actually do?

Well done Kiptum!

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 12:03

Second fastest ever!

As someone who thought managing couch to 5k was an achievement, I am in awe

I think they improve blood flow because they stop the arms swelling.

What stunning racing it's been today.
Weather looks awful, was nice and warm yesterday.

viques · 23/04/2023 12:09

i wonder if they will ever break the two hours, looking at how far ahead Kiptum was I think it is possible. What a great race today, incredible races from the elite athletes, now to enjoy the club and fun runners who have been slogging it out on cold wet frosty mornings for months. Salute to them all.

hartof · 23/04/2023 12:11

The elites are just incredible, seeing their faces when they cross the finish line and all of their hard work has paid off is very emotional.

DH did Manchester marathon last week, he's done half margins but has never been able to complete the training for a full. I was so proud of him and kept crying because all of his hard work and training had finally paid off. Meanwhile I sat on the sofa eating McDonald's watching the live stream!

I think it's something we will see within the next few years - when we have the right combination of optimum conditions and the extra bit of 'luck' where there are no tiny mishaps that add seconds to the time.

I'll never be an elite marathon runner but I've done quite a lot of half marathons and overcast / a bit wet is much nicer for a long run than warm and sunny IMO.

What I hate is strong winds, the last 5km of a half once was straight into a force 5 and it was just awful, it felt like I was running as fast as I could but not moving forward.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 23/04/2023 12:15

Both elites and the wheelchair were incredible. Yelling and welling up here!

I always find the Marathon so emotional.

AnyFucker · 23/04/2023 12:16

A sub 2 hour marathon is surely within reach

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 23/04/2023 12:18

Salute to Sir Mo.

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 12:19

Sifan on cloud 9, bless her!

First London marathon was 2 hours, 11 minutes 48 seconds.

OrlandointheWilderness · 23/04/2023 12:21

Aw she's just lovely isn't she!

viques · 23/04/2023 12:23

Lovely to see Sifan wearing a Nike outfit. Hope Nike take note , she is exactly the sort of woman who should be featured to advertise their products.

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 12:24

She is. I don't think I have ever seen such a nail biting race!

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 12:25

Now we get to see all the people in funny costumes - love this bit😄

Our telly's on the blink so we're making do by watching our two hamsters (Mo and Fatima) in their roller balls. It's quite exciting.

  • oops one's just gone under the sideboard. I know from past experience that poking about with a stick is quite useless, The best way to get it out is using the Hoover.
GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 12:31

It's such great people-watching - wondering what all their stories are, whether they are running for charity or to improve a PB or just to say they've done it.

Is that a woman dressed as a Fallopian tube and ovary?
