London Marathon - Anyone watching?

First races (elite wheelchairs) about to start. Anyone else slobbing on the sofa watching folk exert themselves today?

I would listen to Andrew Cotter commentating on my weekly shop. He has the most comforting voice ever.

I used to feel mild guilt watching the Marathon, thinking I should just get off my arse and start running. Now I've done C25K well over ten times and hating it slightly more every time I'm happy to hit Justgiving and let the crazy, admirable people dressed as anvils/eyeballs/Stonehenge knock themselves out.

Sifan seems to be feeling better.

Watching guilt-free on a rest day while recovering from my marathon.

The pace of the elites is astounding. I've occasionally been lapped at that kind of pace at parkrun... how they maintain that for an extra 21 mi/ 37km is incredible.

And just the sheer scale of the event, the participants and spectators. For those to the rear of the race, it's a feat of endurance to keep going for 5, 6, 7, 8 hours.

Wow - congrats to him. He must be good. We just looked up the criteria & you have to be top 5 in your age group in our Borough. (Dd declared she's stick to football 😂🤣) - it's a shame it's not either before or during the main race anymore though so that they benefit from the atmosphere.

She's incredible! I really thought she was out and suddenly she's gaining on the pack again.

squashyhat · 23/04/2023 11:16

A friend is running for charity so I am watching in solidarity while Mumsnetting and eating Toblerone Grin

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 11:25

Yay, go Sifan!

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 11:25

Amazing Sifan closed that gap.

Anyone know why the purple cyclists are there? I’m sure there haven’t been so many cyclists in previous years.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 23/04/2023 11:28

I'm watching. It's my absolute favourite sporting event, I watch it every year. The stats for the number of people it inspires to start running are amazing too.

PollyAmour · 23/04/2023 11:29

I'm watching, drinking cappuccino and eating peanut butter on toast. I might have another look at Couch to 5K later.

The wheelchair athletes were incredible.

QueSyrahSyrah · 23/04/2023 11:34

I've just signed up to a local 10km later in the year, and the ballot for London next year Blush

Wow! Yeling on the edge of the sofa there! That was incredible!

Happynow · 23/04/2023 11:46

Brilliant, just brilliant!

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 11:46

We've got tears in our eyes here!

The expression on Sifan's face as she crossed the line.

Letsnotargue · 23/04/2023 11:47

What an amazing comeback by Sifan. The commentators were talking about when she would retire rather than if, and then she goes and wins it. Inspirational.

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 11:49

It was like a miracle when she broke away at the end.

TeaserandtheFirecat · 23/04/2023 11:49

Sifan!!!! just wow!

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 11:52

Well to done to Sam Harrison!

Amazing win for Sifan , what an extraordinary finish that was. I am wondering what happened to Mo’s hat, a souvenir for someone somewhere!

Same!! Scared the life out of the cat, yelling at the TV!

Phenomenal performance, and the fact her last month of training has been through Ramadan just completely blows my mind. HOW?

GroovyGangConscript · 23/04/2023 11:54

We might be seeing Mo's hat on eBay before the day's out.

OP posts:
viques · 23/04/2023 11:57

And now they are saying there might be a world record in the mens race. Edge of the seat here!
