Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

There used to be horse chestnuts but there was a fungal disease that killed them all off :-(. That might just be in the north east though.

All the horse chestnuts round here have that fungal disease Sad

Love the microscope pics @Kucinghitam!

Britinme · 14/05/2023 12:31

I can't say I'm earwormed by any of the Eurovision songs, though I did like the Australian one. Dh liked Norway best and they came higher up the score than Australia so I guess he has his finger on the popular pulse more than me.

Britinme · 14/05/2023 12:31

Oh and I liked the weird Austrian one that went first.

Who the hell is Edgar? was marvellous.

Apparently "Poe" sounds like German for "bum."

Trying this this afternoon in a change from sourdough. At least it's mainstream methods; I read an American white bread recipe the other day that had fourteen (14) stages! I was losing the will to live before I'd finished reading. That said, I shan't be kneading anything for 8 minutes. I believe the time spent resting is more important than the time spent kneading.

Deliciously Light Honey Oat Bread Recipe

An easy to make, full of flavour honey and oat loaf. Here's the recipe for how to mkae this honey and oat bread, from Lorraine Pascale's A Lighter Way to Bake.

I liked ‘who the hell is Edgar’ and I liked the Finnish one; I wanted that to win.

Britinme · 14/05/2023 15:38

My husband liked the Finnish one too - but he loved the Lordi one that won a few years ago and this guy was in Lordi apparently.

Some of the guys were easy on the eye too - the Cyprus guy and the Italian.

Tricyrtis2022 · 14/05/2023 15:39

@duc748 that looks good, though far too much honey for my taste. Might give it a go but use 2tsp rather than tbsp.

duc748 · 14/05/2023 16:11

Hope you're wrong then, @Tricyrtis2022 ! I'm not really a honey fan (had to nip to the corner shop to buy some), and didn't want a big honey flavour, but time will tell I guess.

Tricyrtis2022 · 14/05/2023 17:08

@duc748 honey always tastes really strong to me, but I see quantities like that regularly in American recipes so maybe it's just me. Have you tried any yet?

Britinme · 14/05/2023 17:15

American bread tastes much sweeter generally than British bread. When I first came over here it tasted almost like cake to me.

CyanCrystalViolet · 14/05/2023 17:23

@duc748 that’s reminded me of when subway was first a thing in the UK and they were offering freebies. I had the honey oat sub and really enjoyed it, so much so I bought them regularly for a while. I seem to recall my dad used to make a honey loaf as like me he was very fond of sweet things.

Kucinghitam · 14/05/2023 17:29

I've become very lazy with bread making, so our usual recipe is a basic mix-it-all-together, leave it overnight, no-knead, blobby loaf.

@Britinme same here. I have very little sweet tooth and American bread was an unpleasant surprise.

CyanCrystalViolet · 14/05/2023 18:13

I have very little sweet tooth

Does not compute. I’ve just eaten an entire bar of green and black’s chocolate…

duc748 · 14/05/2023 18:39

Still cooling, haven't tried it yet.

Chocolate doesn't count. I find burger buns sickly sweet, but can eat my own weight in chocolate.

MavisMcMinty · 14/05/2023 19:06

3 of the best things about menopause for me have been:

  • no premenstrual headaches
  • no premenstrual spots
  • no premenstrual desire for chocolate/sugar.
MavisMcMinty · 14/05/2023 19:07

Salt is my downfall, not sugar.

MavisMcMinty · 14/05/2023 19:08

That loaf looks awesome, @duc748 !

That looks beautiful! I hope it's as delicious as it looks.

Home made bread is always the best. Sadly I eat too much of it if I make it. Commercial is easier to resist.

duc748 · 14/05/2023 20:16

Just trying it now. It is a bit sweet, but not excessively so, And more a generalised sweetness than a strong honey flavour as such. But it's soft, and very light in texture indeed for a 'brown' loaf. Very pleased. Would make again, and perhaps reduce the honey a bit from 2 tbsp to one.
