Anyone in Germany care to chat?

I got a bit (lot) sick of all the German-bashing in that cake thread, some of it comes from just not knowing anything about the place, some of it is a kind of unwillingness to understand that things can be very different in other places.

There was a fair bit of niggling about how Brits might think German directness is rude - but as pp pointed out, Germans would think it rude if you walked into a waiting room at the Doctor's surgery without saying "morgen zusammen"

There was also German Cake Bashing (😂) at one point.

So. Anyone care just to have a long running thread for the expats/immigrants/Germans here who are in Germany, or from Germany and missing/not missing it, or are thinking of coming here?

We also have cake forks. They have come in very handy as children's forks too.

Bananalanacake · 20/04/2023 17:38

Lays crisps could be Walkers but I've never found Prawn cocktail.

Minimochi · 20/04/2023 17:47

We live near Frankfurt, too, although we are currently on holiday in Cornwall and planning on stocking up before we drive back later this week.
DS is 6 and has told me I'm not allowed to speak German when we are in England. He generally isn't too keen on German, although his teacher has assessed him as "on track".
We moved about 5 years ago, so DS has lived in Germany for longer than he has in England.

Well you're just being silly now😁

I'm not sure that prawn cocktails are even a thing here.

I remember it being mainly plain & paprika!

Cheese & onion doesn't seem to be a thing either nor salt & vinegar.

I guess tastes are different!

Caspianberg · 20/04/2023 17:58

Mary Berry has easiest mince pie filling recipe. It’s basically ingredients, heat, mix. Stores for 2 years in jars.

ShoesoftheWorld · 20/04/2023 18:08

Brexit German here too, been here 20ish years (lived in various parts of the country, now in Brandenburg). German dh, three children born here, all my career here, won't ever be going back to the UK (for holidays yes, obviously, but not to live).

As the cake thread showed, there are people who can't resist wheeling out the stereotypes. The Google Translate merchants were fun too <eyeroll>

Food I have not found in Germany,,,, (but if you have seen it please let me know).

Cadbury's Creme eggs
Monster Munch (in fact any crisps by Walkers)
Ginger Nut biscuits, Custard Creams, Malted Milks, bourbons
Mince pies at Christmas
Gravy granules
Self raising flour
Heinz salad cream
Blocks of cheese without that hard bit of wax round the outside
Crumpets
Stuffing mix to go with a roast
Tea bags in multipacks of 480

I use this website for bits I can't get locally... better postage costs than most expat shops.

Kaufland (I think) has Tyrrell's crisps and used to have Kettle Chips. Most places have balsamic vinegar flavour or sour cream and onion type. Never seen prawn cocktail here though...

Michelle's is our Brit food supplier of choice. We get bags of 1100 Tetley teabags from there or Amazon.

doradoo · 20/04/2023 18:12

Another Brexit German joining in! Been here since 2008, kinder all in gymnasium - DS1 affected by NRW's Abi cock up this week.... generally happy here an no plans to leave!

Maerchentante · 20/04/2023 18:12

German (and Brexsh!t Brit) living in London here, originally from near-ish Stuttgart.
Quite lucky that I live in a part of London where good bread is easy to get (if expensive).
I was slightly offended by the German cake bashing on the other thread. Yes, they can be dry but that depends on how long you bake them.

YY to the person who said that sarcasm is part of German culture. Sometimes I am just a tad too sarcastic. When I'm "home" I always have to moderate myself as my niece and nephew are too young to pick it up.

ShoesoftheWorld · 20/04/2023 18:15

Argh, what happened with the Abi? My eldest is in the throes of it too, though not in NRW obv.

Ylvamoon · 20/04/2023 18:18

@Maerchentante I wonder if you are from a similar area to me... I am definitely Baden and not Würtemberg!

I love German bread, sadly not available in the Midlands.

I haven't read the German cake thread BUT DC, DH and myself of course prefer German cakes to the English ones...

The schools weren't able to download the papers so yesterdays exams were postponed till tomorrow- when there's also a Bahnstreik to contend with!

Igneococcus · 20/04/2023 18:22

Where's the cake thread?
German, and a fabulous baker.

I'm from the "border region". Just about Baden, but five minutes away you're in Württemberg.
My brother is proud to be a Badener, but then he is a die hard KSC fan, so beyond any help ;)

I love Germany and its culture - it would be my dream to live there - I hope you don't mind me joining to lurk and enjoy your discussions.

ichundich · 20/04/2023 18:27

Fellow German expat here. What was the cake thread about? Anyone bashing German cake has obviously never been to southern Saxony and tried Bienenstich or Apfelkuchen mit Decke!

Katzenkuchen · 20/04/2023 18:28

There was also German Cake Bashing (😂) at one point.

There was a lot of stuff on that thread I rolled my eyes at, but the German Cake Bashing definitely took the biscuit! I also don’t understand the hate for Sandkuchen, what have poor Zitronenkuchen and Marmorkuchen ever done to anyone? Also, they’re only dry if you’re shit at baking (looking at my MIL, who thinks she can save calories by reducing the butter by about 50% in any cake recipe with no ill effects.😭 Same for her bone-dry Weihnachtsplätzchen that always go straight into the bin!).

I’m in Munich but grew up in a small village a stone’s through from the Austrian border (waves at Caspianberg). I’m always a bit bemused about the weird ideas and stereotypes people have about oh-so-traditional Bavaria when none of them tally with my personal experience at all. It’s not just from foreigners, German Twitter is also terrible for this. I’ve stopped trying to convince people otherwise now as we’d probably have even more people wanting to move here if they realised that most of us don’t talk with a heavy accent, aren’t members of a Trachtenverein, don’t hate gay people, foreigners or progress and that women are allowed to have careers. Also, in return I will continue to cultivate my own negative perceptions of the rest of the country. 😤

On the topic of German directness easily veering into rudeness, I can definitely see where many Brits are coming from! I find many of my fellow countrymen and -women breathtakingly rude and much prefer the British way. As a polite and slightly shy introvert, in some ways I felt much more at home living in London than I ever have in Germany! Despite going there quite regularly, I also still find Berlin rudeness a shock to the system every time. My PILs (who are from Dresden) are also horrendously direct and I really can’t handle it. Will tell you to your face that you've got quite fat and think nothing of it! Thankfully my DH is nothing like them.

Heinz salad cream
Easily available in just about any supermarket here in Munich, e.g. Rewe and Edeka.

Blocks of cheese without that hard bit of wax round the outside
My local Rewe sells Cathedral City Cheddar.

Tea bags in multipacks of 480
Asian shops or Amazon. Actually just ordered 480 bags of Yorkshire tea from there.

I agree that Germany mostly has very boring crips flavours, although cheese & onion and salt & vinegar are available at most larger supermarkets where I am. The best place for more interesting crisps is GoAsia if you have a branch near you (prawn, lobster, seaweed, kimchi, etc.).

You can get PG Tips from Globus. Big bag.
I'm looking for decent decaf tea. Will probably get some here.

The price of bread has shot up here in Dresden, too, but I still love the loaves that are about 90% seeds.

Oh, is that what the memes were about in NRW!

I've been trying to get my Deutschlandkarte, and digitisation has been an issue on that too, in Dresden. The transport company in these parts has the €49 ticket then you have to apply for an extra €10 ticket to take your dog/children/bike with you. All online. I did it 5 times and got confirmations every time saying I had either the €49 or the €10 ticket but not both. Went in to sort it out in person (30 minute wait, queue down the street) and they said they couldn't help until I received the card in the post. Did my best impression of a patient person.

I find this thread fascinating as I am married to a German who was born in London but spent a few years in Munich. I am very sarcastic and everything I said anything sarcastic to him, he took it literally and kept getting perplexed by it, to the point that I had to stop being sarcastic.
I always blamed his Germanness but also suspect he might be neuro diverse so maybe that is why he is more literal?

You really couldn't make it up. This bit about the Geography Abitur is even funnier, though.
