If you do lots of different activities, how much do you spend on fitness/exercise each month?

Until last year I was a member of a really cheap gym which offered some really cool, different fitness classes.
It was £30/month for unlimited classes. I was doing, on average, three classes per week which worked out at £2.50 per class 😍Over the summer months, I was managing four classes per week which worked out at £1.88 per class 😵

The gym closed down - unsurprisingly. I haven't found the types of classes that I want offered in one place, by one gym. So to continue the types and combination/balance of classes that I want I've ended up spread across three different offerings at a total cost of £126/month 😱Quite a jump in price.

The jump in price is making me twitchy.

I've had a look at local gym prices so I have an idea of how much people spend on membership. But I'm more interested in how much people spend when they're doing classes/activities here and there, rather than all in one place that they're a member of.

So, how much as you spending each month on fitness or exercise activities, please?

I'm also aware that there are hidden costs of exercise too - decent trainers, clothing, transport etc. But, for now, I'm just after a sense of spending on the actual activities themselves.

£85 - 22 CrossFit classes per month
£40 - 2 sessions per week of supplemental CrossFit (sessions are programmed and monitored by coaches but you don't complete them in a class environment, just a time that suits you)

£40 - not every month but a 1-1 session to work on something specific

Pre covid- got a GP gym referral due to multiple chronic health issues. £25 a month for unlimited gym, classes and pool. Went about 3x week and really improved my fitness from below crap to okish.

Covid hit and I started Les mills on demand (had done the classes at the gym). Still do that at home instead (can pause the classes for a break, no super fit skinny people looking at me 😳😳). Mostly do bodypump and body combat in my bedroom, want to do more of the yoga type classes. Costs £13/month.

SouthCountryGirl · 21/04/2023 19:33

I pay yearly for my swimming membership £221

Triathlon club is £4 a session. I mostly do that once a week.

Looking at a cycling group which is £3 a time. That's once or twice a month.

My gym is £67 a month, the other local one is about £78. I tried one of the cheaper chains (£35) but it wasn't nice. That said, it’s currently working out at about £75 a visit! Running club is £15/year.

NotMeNoNo · 21/04/2023 19:37

Gym is about £55 and Pilates £30. I currently pay for a PT on top of that.

I don’t have a gym membership, I just do classes across different studios in London. For two studios (I.e. two groups of studios, because they have branches across the city) I buy class packs directly from the studio, and each class works out at around £15. Then I have a ClassPass membership on top for trying out different studios.

In total I spend £300+ per month, which is a lot, but it’s my absolute favourite thing to do and I consider it an investment in my health (incl. mental health)!

Near me (London) there seem to be three tiers of class prices - this is if you buy ad hoc or a “bundle” of 10 classes, not a membership.

£35 ish per class - this is for reformer pilates, or small group training, generally with physios as the instructor. I refuse to pay this but can see if I had injuries or post partum issues it might be worthwhile.

£18 ish per class - most other privately run classes

£10/11 - classes at council subsidised facilities

PT is £80 ish/hr I think.

I go to a £18 class 2/3 times a week. I could definitely save money by using Youtube etc at home but I just don’t have the self discipline.

I’m an ~£18/class person but I have tried the £35+ classes on various intro offers and I have to say they are lush 😍

Something for me to aspire to in the future perhaps!

I have a membership at a spa at a five star hostel where I do aqua aerobics and swimming, it cost 2k per year.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 22/05/2023 14:42

Running & cycling twice a week each - free. Swim one a week 7.50e. walk regularly and I have some weights at home I use occasionally. Free classes on YouTube in yoga and pilates

PositiveLife · 22/05/2023 15:08

I have a membership to the council sports centres. It's about £260 a year and includes gym, swimming and fitness classes (though the classes get booked up quickly so I don't really bother with them).
Other activities add up to about £95 a month - this sounds a lot written down but it covers 4 different activities (3 cheap ones and 1 more expensive one)

Ambi · 22/05/2023 15:42

£32pm local Council sports centre. Decent gym, good selection of classes and choice of pools all over the borough. The local private gyms are slightly more money but are smaller and/ or have no pools.

lieselotte · 22/05/2023 16:07

I used to use a personal trainer who charged me £30 for a face to face hour's session if I paid for ten in a block.

She decided to give up PT and I found someone else who I was going to use who charged £60 a session - online!

I found an outdoor fitness class where I pay £20 a month for one session a week instead :)

As well as that £20 I also pay about £52 a month for a weekly swimming lesson. And I am a member of two running clubs which costs about £5 a month when you spread out the two annual subscriptions over the year.

The swimming is expensive but we effectively subsidise people who are on a special deal from when the leisure centre was run by the local council who only pay about £30 a month :(

I also have a subscription to Girls Run the World which is £10 a month for various on demand strength and conditioning sessions. I am not sure at the moment if I will continue with it long term but it is quite helpful to dip in and out of.

During covid I had a Zwift membership but got bored with it last year and gave it up about a year ago. That cost £12.99 a month, I don't know how much it is now.

So I spend around £90 a month.

Mummypete · 22/05/2023 16:24

£139 for David Lloyd membership. I do about 12 classes a week plus outdoor swimming (and sunbathing) in the summer so well worth it IMO. Also includes a monthly guest pass so I either take DH or a friend for a swim/spa session.

fireflyloo · 22/05/2023 16:30

£27 a month and I do mostly classes, 3-4 per week.

Decafflatteplease · 22/05/2023 16:36

There's 6 of us although one goes free so 5 people and we pay yearly and it's £1000.

We swim most weekends as a family and I generally do a swim once a week on my own and either a gym session or class aswell so I think it's well worth the money. If we were to pay as you go it would be £80 for a family swim (not a typo!!) And £7 a class, gym not available on pay as you go. So it's well worth having membership.

The cheaper council run pool would be £20 I think for a family swim but isn't accessible for my disabled child so 💲💲💲it is for us!

Hello everyone,

I was surprised when this thread popped back up on my list 😅

I've actually made some adjustments since I started this thread. I cancelled one of my memberships (£38 per month) because it was just a shit version of what I do with my PT.

That brought the price down a bit.

But then I accidentally convinced my PT that he was under-charging for his services. So he added £5 onto the hourly rate (so its now £20 per hour not £15). So that bumped he price up a bit. LOL.

And I do a HIIT class per week for £7 a pop.

So I'm at £108 per month. But its totally worth it. I really listened to everything that people said about fitness being an investment, about spending money on myself etc.

Gym and spa membership is 43 per month. Swimming and unlimited classes. I also do canicross which is free (basically running with my dogs).

Rolloisthebestpony · 22/05/2023 17:54

Not a member of any gyms . I’m a cyclist & a runner

  • cycling club approx £5 per Month
  • cost of bikes / kit / spares / repairs & upgrades - I don’t add it up !!
  • Then there’s stuff like we always stop for coffee / food on rides but I guess that’s my socialising money - I tend to do bike rides with friends whereas other people might meet for lunch or in the pub

overall I spend loads. But it’s what I love & it keeps me fit.

(i don’t spend much on other stuff like beauty treatments, handbags, going out, don’t have things like Netflix etc)

12 classes a week is so impressive! I manage no more than 5 or 6.

I often wonder if instead of paying per class at various studios, a fancy gym membership with good classes - like David Lloyd, Third Space or Equinox - would be better for me as at least the classes are prepaid and ‘unlimited’.

Definitely food for thought!

Hubblebubble · 22/05/2023 18:29

36 pounds a month, covers gym and pool access, plus unlimited classes. I regularly do strength training, HIIT and yoga.

Mummypete · 22/05/2023 20:30

The only thing I do find with David Lloyd is that classes like Pilates are very different depending on the instructor. Some are basically just a stretching session whereas others are really challenging so I do question the quality sometimes and wonder if I’d be getting a better workout if I went to an actual Pilates studio.
But I tend to just do the classes before or after something else like body pump or Blaze so I don’t mind too much if it’s a bit easier going.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 22/05/2023 20:41

I have PT once a week, but he's my friend so not too expensive. I spent £120 a month on that.

Running coach £60 a month. Sports massage £40 a month.

I might join the local gym too so I can do weights more. That's £45 a month I think.

I do have kettle bells, treadmill and bike in my garage - but for some reason rarely use them. I think I prefer to go somewhere to exercise 🤦‍♀️

Cornishclio · 22/05/2023 22:03

My gym membership is £54 a month for off peak. Classes are free as is the gym and swim/spa. I use it roughly three times a week plus we get 15% discount on food/drink. Free soft play for grandkids.
