If you do lots of different activities, how much do you spend on fitness/exercise each month?

Until last year I was a member of a really cheap gym which offered some really cool, different fitness classes.
It was £30/month for unlimited classes. I was doing, on average, three classes per week which worked out at £2.50 per class 😍Over the summer months, I was managing four classes per week which worked out at £1.88 per class 😵

The gym closed down - unsurprisingly. I haven't found the types of classes that I want offered in one place, by one gym. So to continue the types and combination/balance of classes that I want I've ended up spread across three different offerings at a total cost of £126/month 😱Quite a jump in price.

The jump in price is making me twitchy.

I've had a look at local gym prices so I have an idea of how much people spend on membership. But I'm more interested in how much people spend when they're doing classes/activities here and there, rather than all in one place that they're a member of.

So, how much as you spending each month on fitness or exercise activities, please?

I'm also aware that there are hidden costs of exercise too - decent trainers, clothing, transport etc. But, for now, I'm just after a sense of spending on the actual activities themselves.

That has loads of great classes too

QuintanaRoo · 20/04/2023 18:25

£105 gym membership
Strava membership which I think is about £10 a month
also Zwift membership which should be £15 a month but bizarrely they haven’t billed me in two years, I’ve even emailed them to ask how am i still getting access when I’m not paying and they said they don’t know! 😀

nancyglancy · 20/04/2023 18:28

£14 a year for local leisure membership.
£1.80 off peak swim with that every week and £4ish peak swim also once a week.

Nordic walking group once a week- free (apart from drive to the location)

Walking a lot - also free

Weights in house I pick up rarely 🙁

Nothing, they pay me. Got certified as an instructor, so get paid when I go to gym and the job comes with free gym membership also in my free time, plus all the classes I want to take. It's not that hard really as long as you are even moderately fit and enjoy standing in front of a class.

Spudlet · 20/04/2023 18:35

2 PT sessions a month which cost £60 in total, in my garden. I get homework for between sessions which I have the equipment for anyway so they’re free. Membership of my canicross club is £20 a year, obviously there are transport and equipment costs on top of that. I try to run three times a week though often I only manage twice. If I want to do some yoga, I’ll go on YouTube although I’d love to do a class - can’t find a local one at a time I can do though. The PT sessions do feel like quite an indulgent thing to do, but I think that’s just because I’ve been well conditioned by society to put myself last as a mum - they do me a world of good though!

£50 a month, council gym, go 2-3 times a week for swimming or classes.

I walk the dog and use my e bike a fair amount. I hate the treadmill and exercise bikes when I could go outside instead.

I'm mid 50s for context.

fairtrauchled · 20/04/2023 19:45

I pay £55 a month for full access ie,7 days a week from when the gym opens until it closes.I do 5 classes a week plus a couple of hours in the gym.

PercyJ · 20/04/2023 20:07

I pay £71 per year to use the FIIT app and also run which is free. I do have 2 young children tho and wouldn't really make it to a gym as much as I'd like so the home workouts work for me.

I love that.

For me, a garage home gym would mean I could do PT with some semblance of privacy. At the moment, PT happens in the park at the end of my street where I take my dog twice daily and, therefore, know 98% of people 😩

Do you have a spare room? We don’t have a lot of space - London, so our spare room has to be a guest bedroom, my home office, and also a home gym. As soon as we saw it pitched, we invested in the Kickstarter for the Pivot Bed: we have the top spec version and it’s a full Olympic power rack which converts into a pull-down bed and has functionality for spin bike and rowing resistance. It’s one of the best purchases we’ve ever made.

orangedalmatian · 20/04/2023 20:16

£50

Trollsinmyeggbox · 20/04/2023 20:23

£34 a month for unlimited classes, unlimited swimming and gym access and £75 a month for 4 sessions of reformer Pilates to book when I want through the month.

CheeseMcKnees · 20/04/2023 20:24

We have horses so probably £500ish a month

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/04/2023 21:01

Approx £32 per month on trampoline gymnastics (1 class a week), plus £15 per month for online Body Pump/Metafit run by a personal trainer I know. That’s for 2 classes a week. Just restarted Couch 2 5k which is free. Total cost = £47 per month.

Like someone else the kids are costing much more so it’s a drop in the ocean!

samthebordercollie · 20/04/2023 21:10

Caroline Girvan workouts on you tube (free) but I bought the dumbbells. Running club 80€ a year, plus shoes 450€ a year. I run 35 miles a week and do weights with CG 5 times a week so not too expensive overall

QuentininQuarantino · 20/04/2023 21:20

30€ a week personal trainer at home
60€ a month private surfing lessons
300€ a year council gym

AuntieMarys · 20/04/2023 21:27

Gym membership £40 a month, open 6am till 10pm. I do 3-4 spin classes a week plus gym. I also see a PT weekly, £28 a week.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 20/04/2023 21:38

Gym membership £20 per month. Yoga £4 a week and ballet is £70 a term.

I usually do 2 or 3 classes a week at the gym and just free style it once or twice. I also try to run 5k which is free once a week.

Kyse · 20/04/2023 21:55

£39 for peloton. I adore it

FrangipaniBlue · 20/04/2023 22:27

Local sports centre £27 per month (should be £37 but I get corporate discount through my tri club)

Covers gym, pool, sauna/steam room and any classes.

In reality I use the gym twice, pool & sauna 3 times each week so £5 per session ish?

BUT I also have a triathlon coach who I pay £75 per month.....

FrangipaniBlue · 20/04/2023 22:30

Actually I missed that I also have:

Zwift membership £12.99 pm
Strava £58 pear year
FulGaz £80 pear year
Training Peaks £120 pear year
Tri club £35 per year

So all in it's about £140 per month averaged out?

FrangipaniBlue · 20/04/2023 22:32

In total I've also probably spent around £20k on kit for triathlon (including my bikes) Blush

MistySkiesAreGone · 21/04/2023 00:32

£61 for Better You. Includes swimming, gym, all classes and I can use the centre near my house and the centre near my work. Centres all over the country if I wished.

They do 2 back to back classes on weekend day mornings that I like and a couple of good mid week ones.

That said I used to be a member of a small community gym and I still sometimes pay and go for classes there, as the timing works out that way. I hardly drink alcohol so I don't mind, it's my drug!

MistySkiesAreGone · 21/04/2023 00:34

So 6 classes (i.e. 3 x 2 back to back), and 1 'swim then gym' session a week.

Helloits2023 · 21/04/2023 06:34

I’ve also ended up spending a slightly absurd amount of money on three different things if it makes you feel any better:

  1. £35 a month pool membership at a local private school. In theory includes classes (but not particularly good) and gym (but I don’t really do just going to the gym)
  2. £13 a week on a yoga class. It’s a particular type and I’ve been with my teacher for years, so I think it’s very good value even though I could do (much worse) yoga at the pool/gym for free
  3. £195 every six months or so for a pack of 10 spin classes at a fancy London spinning place. Again could do a much more boring spin class for free at the pool/gym but this place is so good, the music and instructors make it feel like fun not exercise. Also a social thing I do with friends. So ridiculous, but worth it.
My monthly spend must be around £120, similar to you. Fitness is a priority for my mental and physical health, and I can afford it and am happy to spend it.
SnappilyMarried · 21/04/2023 17:15

@ComtesseDeSpair I do have a spare room but it's far too small, especially for Muay Thai training which is what I do in the local park ATM 😫

@Spudlet You raise a really important point about putting yourself last. I'm not a mum but I've been absolutely conditioned to put my whims, pleasure and self-care last as a woman. That is, of course unless it involves lady pursuits like shopping or heading to a spa, not powelifting and Muay Thai combat 🤣
