Have you ever had a strange feeling about a particular place?

Inspired by the thread "Do you ever get a strange feeling about someone ( or something?)"

Has anyone else ever had a weird feeling (good or bad) or been creeped out by a particular place? And did you ever figure out why?

My weird place was an indoor crazy golf course, in an old warehouse, with all sorts of complex and wacky decor around each hole. Something about the place utterly creeped me out from the moment we entered. It was like the bit in a horror film where you want to scream at the characters "Run away NOW!"
The feeling was an overwhelming feeling that we were in the presence of great evil. I just wanted to grab my friend and run away as far as possible.
However, I didn't say anything and just pretended to be fine and act like it was fun (friend obviously felt fine there and wanted to do the course). All the while feeling this horrendous crushing evil feeling, and just counting down the holes one by one trying to tell myself it was all fine and we'd be out soon. When we got out and away from the place I sat down and cried, relieved and overwhelmed.

I've no idea why I had such a strong reaction to this place, other friends have been there and enjoyed it.

I'm not usually very woo, try to be rational about things, but do find this stuff interesting!

I had a very strong/odd reaction up close to the Column of Victory at Blenheim Palace (the massive pillar monument). It felt sinister and I couldn't get away from it fast enough. My Husband thought I was barmy. Love the rest of Blenheim, just avoid going near the pillar now.

I visit Blenheim sometimes, and usually regret it once I arrive. I find parts of the grounds and walks really odd, desolate and creepy whatever time of year we visit. Particularly going over the bridge towards the column of victory and round the waterfall.

Places for me. Lewes - gives me the creeps especially near the castle.

Beachy Head, it feels like something is pulling you towards the edge and why ffs is there no fencing at the edge?

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub, in one of the toilets I got a horrible feeling as though something or someone didn’t want me there. Same thing happened in Conquest House in Canterbury in the toilet there. Dover castle gives me the creeps too.

Abroad I was in Spain near I think La Linea, we’d driven to the local shopping mall and then for some reason stopped off at a huge house off the motorway. Can’t think why we stopped. In the courtyard all laid round were dead rats, about 8 of them scattered around and separate and the place was deserted. We both legged it out of there very quickly!

Colliseum in Rome yes freaky and scary. Same with amphitheatre in Saintes, spooky and quiet especially in tunnel where gladiators came through to main arena.

@MotherOfCatBoy I got the weirdest dark vibe at the top bit of the monastery at Mont St Michel. A feeling that there had been some sort of great unhappiness or something awful had happened. I'm not particularly prone to woo feelings either.

A stretch of the A449 between Worcester and Kidderminster. I used to drive to my Dad's from Oxfordshire to Wolverhampton and for no reason I can figure a few miles of the road made me feel ill, whether I was driving or passenger... just a cold sense of dread and I felt sure that either a horrible accident had occurred at some point, or that I would crash there.
When my Dad died I was a bit relieved I'd never have to do that route again!

I agree about Lewes.

Whitby and the North Yorkshire moors. I got chills going through st Mary’s church on the way to the abbey, and that was in broad daylight.

The entrance lobby in an orthopaedic hospital my mother went to a decade or so back. A hospital with a good reputation, a place where people go and get better after treatment, very pleasant staff, nice to my mother - but I felt such gloom and despair waiting there - couldn't work it out at all.

Then checked out the building's history - it was a workhouse for its first forty years, just post Famine - I suspect that was lingering in the old stone walls.

This route rings a bell from posts either here or on other sites. Is this the road that was widened greatly years ago? But partly dual carriageway and partly just two lanes for many miles where the driver's viewpoint never changes and they get fatigued?

Sonolanona · 25/02/2024 20:54

LeSoleil ..yes I think it was widened, and it goes on and on with a few bends, and it just made me feel so uneasy!

We went on a weekend break to Budapest a few years ago. DP and I were having a mooch around the city, it was a beautiful spring day. This one area of the city had lots of lovely looking cafes and bars and I wanted to stop for a drink and sit outside in the sunshine but DP was insisting that we keep moving and find somewhere else. A bit later DP said that he'd found the area with the cafes really oppressive and that he'd got an overwhelming feeling of sadness walking through it which had really troubled him. I thought that was odd as it seemed so lovely and vibrant. A few hours later while I was doing some research on where to go for dinner I discovered that the area DP had got such a bad feeling about had been the Jewish ghetto in the 1930's/40's. It made me shudder.

We were on a driving holiday (Aus) and found a unique, hidden attraction. A depression era farm that was abandoned and is kept as is by a trust of some sort. It's isolated, down a dirt track, away from the highway & not signposted so no one else was there.

The farm was fine. It was the large national park campground next door where we had our lunch. No people, no noise - not even a bird chirping. Creepy. I remember thinking it felt like an opening scene from Criminal Minds. I half expected a serial killer to jump from the bush! I think it was just the feeling of being completely alone & no one would find us if needed, but I'd still never go back!

Pigglingtonbear · 25/02/2024 21:32

Audley End House in Essex has a very oppressive atmosphere. Castle Museum, York, the prison area made me incredibly panicky. Harpenden High Street, Potters Bar, Letchworth, Hemel Hempstead all make me feel depressed. Brighton has a distinctly odd atmosphere, as do the Downs near Sussex University. Love the Lake District to visit but couldn't live there, not sure why.

ginandbearit · 25/02/2024 21:52

Lewes and the East Sussex downs are very strange, I like Lewes but it has an atmosphere, especially in the build up to November the fifth when it has it's big bonfire night parade. The Downs seem quite foreboding, and Beachy Head has a long history of suicides and malevolent atmosphere.

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 25/02/2024 22:01

North Berwick.
I went last year foe a couple of hours, the few people I spoke to were really nice and friendly, it's the kind of place I'd usually love, but I had this really odd feeling that I wasn't welcome there.

CleanQueen123 · 25/02/2024 22:21

Savernake Forest. I used to will my car to get me from one side to the other as fast as possible.

Also in Marlborough, one of the old railway lines. I can't remember where it used to connect too. Andover maybe.

My ex took me for a walk woke day, lovely bright winter day. The further along we got the slower I walked, almost like I was backing off from something. We eventually reached a blocked off railway tunnel. I've never wanted to run away from something so fast in my life but at the same time I didn't want to turn my back on the tunnel.

We did go back and I practically ran all the way with my ex trailing behind wondering what on earth was wrong.

Oh I’ve got 2 more. Smithfield is one. I’d started working in the Barbican area and didn’t know much about the area at all despite being a Londoner. When I walked down a side street to the market I recall it being a blue sky, sunshine day but it was almost ethereal and silent, really weird feeling. Then I walked on more and found the William Wallace plaque and discovered all the burnings of martyrs were there. Can’t think of the other one but will update.

To be fair a few market towns I’ve driven to or been sometimes I get an odd feeling like things have happened there in the past and sometimes there must’ve been hangings. There’s a green near where I live called Elmers End, supposedly site of hangings, it does always feel a bit bleak there and no one hangs around or plays on it!

@ginandbearit most people associate Beachy Head with suicides but some say they’ve seen a figure of a monk when they look out over the cliffs and some say there’s a pull to the edge. I visited once with friends and felt very odd, I was depressed though. I still don’t know why there’s no fencing there as on other unsafe cliff line nearby there is fencing. Maybe it’d spoil the views.

To pp who mentioned Avebury. I’ve been a couple of times but family friends of mine owned and ran a hotel with a restaurant on site there and said the place was odd and they didn’t stay there. Probably circa 2000s.

Witch museum near Tintagel.
