Have you ever had a strange feeling about a particular place?

Inspired by the thread "Do you ever get a strange feeling about someone ( or something?)"

Has anyone else ever had a weird feeling (good or bad) or been creeped out by a particular place? And did you ever figure out why?

My weird place was an indoor crazy golf course, in an old warehouse, with all sorts of complex and wacky decor around each hole. Something about the place utterly creeped me out from the moment we entered. It was like the bit in a horror film where you want to scream at the characters "Run away NOW!"
The feeling was an overwhelming feeling that we were in the presence of great evil. I just wanted to grab my friend and run away as far as possible.
However, I didn't say anything and just pretended to be fine and act like it was fun (friend obviously felt fine there and wanted to do the course). All the while feeling this horrendous crushing evil feeling, and just counting down the holes one by one trying to tell myself it was all fine and we'd be out soon. When we got out and away from the place I sat down and cried, relieved and overwhelmed.

I've no idea why I had such a strong reaction to this place, other friends have been there and enjoyed it.

I'm not usually very woo, try to be rational about things, but do find this stuff interesting!

The coliseum in Rome. The temp that day was close to 40 degrees but when I walked past the little side doors that led to the underground part of the arena I got so cold and visibly shivered. I felt sick and scared looking at the underground part (they had removed half of the coliseum floor so the tunnels underneath were visible).
I took a picture and strange little lights appeared in them.
It was so strong, never felt anything like it before or since.

That’s interesting, because if anywhere was going to give someone heebyjeebees the Colosseum would be it. I didn’t feel anything particularly which surprised me. I would like to know if anyone else felt spooked.
I would also imagine the Death Camps would be the same . No one has mentioned Auchwitz for example.

Only time it’s ever happened to me was looking around high schools for my eldest. In one particular school we had Looked around the new part of the building and it was fine. Went into the older part of the building and felt unexplainably uncomfortable and felt a strong urge to leave.

Oh, I forgot I had a similar thing! Went to look round a secondary school that I was sure would be right for my daughter. All seemed fine, then half way through the tour I got a gut feeling of 'NO'. Really strong, like a voice saying it. I wanted to leave immediately. No idea why that would be.

This has happened to me a few times over the years including in places I've lived. The last time was at Shibden Hall in Yorkshire, not in the house itself but in one of the outbuildings in the courtyard that they have done up to look like a servants quarters. There was a little crib in there and myself and my partner just wanted to get the heck out as fast as we could, it felt colder than the other buildings too.

I had a very strong/odd reaction up close to the Column of Victory at Blenheim Palace (the massive pillar monument). It felt sinister and I couldn't get away from it fast enough. My Husband thought I was barmy. Love the rest of Blenheim, just avoid going near the pillar now.

My mum has two:

Glastonbury and Poundbury.

Snakes Pass.

Ooh yeah. I find myself desperate to get through. Almost leaning forward to will the car to hurry up.

Isle of Man is a very cold, hostile and unfriendly place devoid of any charm. The people are dead inside and wouldnt piss on you if you were on fire. Odd and horrible place.

These threads always end up with people saying Saltburn by the Sea for some reason.

Saltburn isnt too bad... redcar on the other hand... bleak and soul less.

YEARS ago, driving through Glencoe… no one spoke… looming hills, bloodsoaked heather, shudder

Also feel the same about Glencoe! People talk about how beautiful the drive and scenery are… I find myself putting my foot down times I have had to drive through

Yes! To York! Just saw this but had posted independently.

What’s happened in York distinct to other places with ‘history’?

Clifford’s Tower, harbouring shameful history

High Royds, at gloaming, eerie, lonesome atmosphere.

Perhaps any former brick built Victorian lunatic asylum
has absorbed the hapless inmates despair, hopelessness,
forlornly seeping forth at twilight.

beachcomber70 · 25/02/2024 12:26

Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire...I was ok until I went down into kitchen/pantry area then couldn't wait to get out.

Glastonbury...feels heavy/threatening/menacing there, can't stay in the place.

I hate the Isle of Wight...something feels off about the whole island. Apart from the people being so unfriendly and we felt very unwelcome.

A certain quadrant at Oxford University, I took a couple of steps in, looked around and got straight back out. Felt evil even though it was a lovely sunny day.

Been thinking a lot about this today. I'm from Brighton which always comes up on these threads. It's my home and I love it and have always felt safe here so it intrigues me that people feel so differently about it.
I love the countryside of the South Downs outside Brighton too but there's one particular valley I ride through that has given me the creeps since I was a teenager. It's surrounded by steep hills and I just feel like something is watching me from the top.
The horses always tense up too and you can feel them looking at things. Once it was so bad that they just wouldn't walk on and we had to turn round, as soon as we were out of the valley they were absolutely fine.

Other places I've remembered as having odd feelings...
Hereford felt very run-down and oppressive.
As a PP said the Lakes are beautiful but somehow so sad. I used to go on holiday there every Easter as a teenager and often felt very tearful in the evenings, although I'd invariably had a lovely time in the day.

Devils dyke??

Twice - once in a gite somewhere in SW France. Horrible place - chocolate box pretty farmhouse, but the atmosphere was off. The whole place had a feel of almost horror - especially the room where me and my ds slept. When I needed the loo in the night I used to dread going down the corridor and used to just look at the floor as it felt if I looked up or around there would be someone or something there which I didn't want to see. Never felt so uncomfortable or creeped out by anywhere in my life before. The village also seemed 'off' just a really weird vibe

The second place was a few days ago. Just a city museum on the south coast. It's a large Victorian red brick building that's been well done up and had loads of lottery funding - but the atmosphere is grim. It just feels heavy, uncomfortable and sad.

Not sure what the history of the building is - wanted to ask but felt too embarrassed. The rest of the family seemed to like it but I hated it and couldn't wait to leave

Was the place in France near Marciac?

LeSoleil · 25/02/2024 14:08

The Forest of Dean feels like something is trapped in a different time, trying to get out but too heavily overlaid by current time.

Naptrappedmummy · 25/02/2024 14:09

Clown museum at Wookey Hole. Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

Blackcatbride · 25/02/2024 14:33

@beachcomber70 ooh interesting.... which Oxford colllege please? Would love to go and take a look.

Tavistock. A cold, eerie, unwelcoming place.
The Isle of Wight. See above

Was the place in France near Marciac?

It wasn't Mariac or anywhere near, but a small village / hamlet fairly near Frayssinet-le-Gelat. I've just looked at it on google maps and have been surprised by how normal / sleepy it looks

Marcipex · 25/02/2024 16:34

@SorrelForbes I agree about Tavistock.
I know a lot of people really like it.

Recently visited the prison in Shrewsbury and got a really bad vibe from one of the cells. It was the segregation cell which was two rooms, the first was like a small hallway, I forget what it was for, and then at the bottom of the hallway was the cell itself. I felt almost nervous/anxious when I stepped into the hallway, and then when I went into the cell, I had a really strong feeling of dread and like there was something bad about the room. There were no ghost stories attached to this particular cell unlike some of the others.

Another one was Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. Hardwick Hall itself was fine, but there's also 'Hardwick Old Hall' which is just ruins, and when I went you could go up the old stairs and stand in what was left of the top floor. I felt like I couldn't breathe properly in the Old Hall and as though someone was hugging me really tightly. The feeling got stronger when I got to the top of the stairs and went away quickly as soon as I left the ruins. I don't have asthma and was reasonably fit so I don't know why I felt that way!

Someone upthread (and a couple of years ago!) mentioned Eyam in a general way. I find it has a really sad, quiet atmosphere, but given the history…
I’ve also lived in 2 houses that gave me the heebie geebies (rented fortunately).
