My favourite lip balms have been discontinued

I have been using Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment and Aveda's Lip Saver for years. I'm loyal. Now, Kiehl's has discontinued the stick in favour of a squeeze tube product and Aveda has changed their formula dropping the spf. (?!).
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good lip balm in a stick with spf?
Any anyone else with a similar situation of trying to replace a beloved product?

I use cherry Carmex which has SPF and feels really nice but not gloopy/sticky

stepfordwifey · 19/04/2023 07:30

If you're in Canada try the EOS egg shaped balms. Lots of different flavours and theres a good one with SPF. I picked up a few in a general drugstore.

orangegato · 19/04/2023 07:39

@Shinyandnew1 it smells amazing, and is really creamy and high SPF. I’ll try to find a link, it was years ago I had this. I use Malibu lip balms now they’re about £3 for 3 on eBay but they’re quite waxy and not as good as the Manbi ones.

Preliminary report:used Burt's Bees tinted last night. I think it was a bit too creamy, ie too easily smeared. Also thought it had too much pigment for a tint. I'll try it a few more times before final verdict, though. Using Blistex today. Seems more solid and a better feel so far.

My favourite lip balm has been discontinued too - it’s the Boots Strawberry Lip Salve. I’ve been using it for years, it’s pretty cheap and basic but so much nicer than the awful blue original one. So annoying when they do this!

Nooooo

I bought a Burt's Bees with spf 15 and a Blistex with spf 15. Report to follow. 🤓

That's cool. I've used burts bees before and it was very good.

I bought a lavera tinted one recently in strawberry red, it does slightly feel like I've squished a ripe strawberry on my lips! It's very sticky. No spf however.

Nuxe ‘Rêve de Miel’ has been my go-to for the past 22 years. It’s in a small jar and lasts for ages.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/04/2023 20:28

Update: 2 nights Burt's Bees and two days Blistex. I feel like the Burt's Bees actually leaves my lips feeling dry. The Blistex feels better. Neither have staying power and need to be re-applied often (compared to the products I used previously).
I still miss the Kiehl's Butterstick and Aveda Lip Saver, but I do have to move on, don't I? Handhold, please as I try to accept a new normal.

Update #2. After a few days I don't think either Burt's Bees or Blistex are really very good. Both need to be re-applied often, as I previously mentioned in last update, and I actually think they tend to dry my lips overall, so that I need to keep applying. If that makes sense. So, I've been using pure lanolin at night. Just a dab. It seems to work quite well! I'm still going to search for a stick lip balm with spf that I can use daily, though. I wouldn't want to just use lanolin as it is sticky and doesn't have spf. But, for now I like it best for how my lips feel and look.
I forgot that I had also purchased another brand, Sun Bum spf 30, a while back. This one is very soft for a stick and doesn't last at all. It's a hard pass.

Cherry carmex OP!

Aerish · 24/04/2023 06:50

Rose and Co do nice balms and salves.

Deathraystare · 24/04/2023 10:40

@dottiedodah

I sometimes use Burts Bees -in particular the tinted ones but some of them -the ones shaped like ordinary stick balms not the skinny ones leave my lips feeling a bit bruised when I apply them. Weird.

dottiedodah · 24/04/2023 19:40

Deathraystare oh wow ,that's strange. I really only got into them as my sons gf used them. Used niven before but didn't work too well.just used the plain one and OK. Have tried the tinted ones .not quite such a pure product maybe?

Neena289 · 24/04/2023 19:59

Agree with Nuxe reve de miel but recently tried the O'Keeffes (oval orange stick packaging) is absolutely brilliant. Effective in one go, fairly matte, doesn't budge and doesn't taste of anything. For less than 4 quid I wouldn't bother buying nuxe again.

HolidaysSunnyDays · 24/04/2023 20:21

This one is really nice, light and moisturising. The whole family use it, I bulk buy!

The Beauty Pie one I linked to has SPF 30

I use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour stick , everything else I've tried drags on my lips, it's also good if you get cold sores

This is nice and Lasts a long time

Desperatelyseekingcommonsense · 24/04/2023 20:43

I really like moo goo it has an spf 15. I found it in my local chemist but they’ve stopped stocking it so I buy online.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/04/2023 06:27

@Desperatelyseekingcommonsense
I scoured their site - no spf products.

I agree - the O'Keeffe's 'Lip Repair' is my back-up lip salve. No scent, works well. And a whole lot cheaper than Nuxe!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/04/2023 07:44

Update: have been searching online for "best spf lip balms" and also trying to find info as to why Kiehl's discontinued Butterstick. I think there has been some sort of issue with the spf itself as Aveda's Lip Saver and another brand, Sugar, have suddenly dropped the spf in their formulas. I came across a site, which I forgot to bookmark, that suggests comparative products based on the ingredient list of the product want a sub for. I guess I'll have to review my search history to find it again because the site looked pretty good! It's too bad Sugar dropped the spf because that was one of the recommendations generated by that comparative products site.
I'm still dabbing lanolin on my lips at night and it's still giving great results. Not really using anything during the day, but today I found an old tube of Kiehl's and managed to scoop out a bit of remaining product with my pinky. It made me very happy. 😄

Update: using lanolin overnight and Blistex spf 15 during the day. It's ok, but not as good as the discontinued products I used previously. 🤷‍♀️

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour lip balm

This in lipstick version, not tube. Best lip balm ever!
