What is ONE item that changed dramatically and surprisingly your home life for the better

Looking for inspiration to start the process of tidying up (all aspects of) my life.
I already posted another thread related to this.
As an individual, I am very organised and perfectionist. I love order, cleanliness and tidiness. BUT, my house/ life rarely looks the part. I want to sort out my life once and for all so that it is always either spick and span or easily back on track.

On this thread I'd like to ask you what is ONE item (big or small/ expensive or cheap) that, when you acquired, changed your home life for the better so dramatically and surprisingly that you honestly wonder how you were able to cope before it graced your life.

Boringly laundry related as I have been hanging it out this morning:

•Socktopus/peg hangers for smalls and socks.
•net laundry bag to keep smalls and socks together in the machine.
•collapsible laundry basket to be stashed away out of sight and not tripped over.
•heated airer (not today though, for the winter).
•a child tall enough to peg the washing out and responsible enough to bring it in neatly and folded.

The last one is honestly the winner...

My three tier steamer pans

My Aeropress.

DustyLee123 · 17/04/2023 08:14

I buy the black socks with coloured bottoms from Next, much easier to pair.
Supermarket delivery every week saves me half a day of traipsing to the supermarket, pushing the trolley round, and driving back.
Love my air fryer, it’s saving me a fortune in electricity.
Love my cordless Dyson too.

Hi everyone and thank you for your posts! Just to clarify: I am asking for an item related to any aspect of life not just cleanliness which is vital but not the only aspect.
I agree with Airfryer. Love mine.
Robot cleaner too but I have no carpets.
A cleaner must be a great help but I wouldn't want one as I'd be cleaning everything before she comes as I'd be too embarrassed to let anyone outside of my family see any mess/ dirt. Weird I know.

To be honest this is definitely a part of why having a cleaner works so well for me.

In addition to the two hours she spends cleaning it also gives me a kick up the bum to tidy/do dishwasher/do washing machine etc before she comes so that I’m making the most of her time.

Using a meal service eg Green chef, mindful chef, Gousto etc.

I swop between them regularly but they have given me so much time back and have got everyone else in the house cooking a bit too when it was always such a bind for me to plan, shop and churn out evening meals.

Same here. On the days we don't have Gousto delivery, we still cook their recipes using our own bought ingredients.
It has improved the quality and variety of our meals, plus getting the non cooks in the family interested in cooking.
When I buy the ingredients for 3 "gousto meals" it costs the same as their box cost so it's not a dear way of eating (for us)

Onion Goggles and chefs cutting glove. Game changer, i prep a lot of veg and my eyes would stream doing onions and would always cut myself.

WhatALightbulbMoment · 17/04/2023 08:36

Robot hoover.
Not only is it fabulous at getting rid of all the dust, it also forces you to clear the floors completely before you start it.

I agree, I don't clean before my cleaner arrives, but I do tidy up. Having her means my house is tidier as well as cleaner.

A heated throw, I actually have two now. I have had my heating on 3 times this winter.

Countmeout · 17/04/2023 08:38

300cm Ikea Pax wardrobe which has been a game changer in terms of keeping my bedroom tidy.
A kitchen with a built in bin.
sorry that’s 2.

Branchingout2000 · 17/04/2023 08:42

Robot lawnmower
Robot hoover
Pet insurance - we would have had very different decisions to make without this.

Which ones do you have? I’m waiting until the summer to hopefully find some cheaper.

PuppyMonkey · 17/04/2023 08:45

Another vote for Gousto.

Also Amazon Prime. Blush

ZeroPlastic · 17/04/2023 08:45

Second pair of kitchen scissors.

pinkstripeycat · 17/04/2023 08:45

Resin patio.
Looks great
Can walk on it with bare feet winter or summer with no stones in my feet.
Can sit outside more
Makes me feel so happy

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 17/04/2023 08:46

My tabletop dishwasher. There just wasn’t the space to install a proper one here, but I found one that you don’t even need to hook up to the sink - you fill it using a jug and the waste pipe just goes into sink. I love it to the point that I now feel resentful of the pans that are too big for it 😁

ClaraBourne · 17/04/2023 08:47

Old fashioned carpet sweeper which I whizz around nearly every day.

Full vacuum once a fortnight maybe.

Can2022getanyworse · 17/04/2023 08:48

Divorce.

Ladysaurus · 17/04/2023 08:50

All my socks are black. No matching.

Air fryer, slow cooker. Batch cook as much as possible.

All bills on direct debit

A washing machine with a timer. Put it on to finish as I get home from work so it doesn't sit in there wet all day. Same with dishwasher.

A good backpack. Keep stocked with day to day basics and hands kept free.

CupEmpty · 17/04/2023 08:50

Storage is key. Don’t just buy a random chest of drawers or unit. Think about what annoys you/ clutters a room or doesn’t have a home and figure out what storage you need for it. If everything has a home it’s much easier to keep the place tidy.

Quinque · 17/04/2023 08:52

A long handled dustpan and brush.
Brilliant for sweeping up crumbs or dried mud without having to bend double or get out the hoover.

DeepTalkInTheShallowEnd · 17/04/2023 08:53

When my daughter was hospitalised for 6 months aged 21 I think my attitude to what really mattered changed. I never dwell on the fact that I have too many books to fit in my bookcases, etc.

Caspianberg · 17/04/2023 08:54

Small ottoman in hallway.
It houses all hats/ gloves/ umbrellas/ toddler nursery bag. I swap out winter and summer so it isn’t full, and everything easy to find. But it really reduces entrance clutter, and easy enough system than even not yet 3 year old can open, lob stuff in, and close
Can sit on also for shoes if easier.

ageingdisgracefully · 17/04/2023 09:04

Knagglig wooden boxes from ikea, panted to match the decor. They stack and hide a multitude of cluttery sins.

One main accent colour throughout the house. Creates a cohesive look.

All socks are black, as are knickers and bras. Saves time on matching in the morning.

I'm a sucker for a virtual fireplace too: mine's a crackly youtube one.
,
I'd love a freestanding larder! Also working on shoe storage.

One of the good things about wfh for me is more time to spend on sorting the house!
