Phone alert

Can anyone explain to me why people are so against having an alert sent to their phones. I understand it’s a strange thing to set up if it is for what they say it’s is for ie floods and earthquakes etc, I believe it’s incase we go to war. But I see people saying it’s a way of the government trying to control us, I don’t see how it’s control. This is a genuine question and not to be controversial.

That makes sense @Needmorelego. I suppose i'm thinking of the lone wolf attacks on people walking in the street. Normally it takes a while for those attacks to come through as an attack so they would have to locate the terrorist first.

I try and manage my mental health by avoiding big stress things. An alert on my phone that is screaming "danger" will not be doing me any favours at all.
And I cant turn the notification off either.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S8... there is no option to switch this stuff off.

I don't understand people saying it's for extreme weather, I live in a flood risk area and Natural Resources Wales have been issuing alerts for years, we get a text, phone call and email if there's any risk. Maybe it's different in the rest of the UK but there's definitely a system in Wales.

What I am scared about is that the government think we will be attacked soon so need to be alerted to war.

@Noddy21 the timing is just an unfortunate coincidence, it has been being planned for a long time. Many other countries have had this in place for a long time.

I really need to try to find the information I read about it wrt when they are allowed to use it & what's involved in using it for something different.

mybrecollection is imtgey only have 'permission' to use it for natural 'disaster' type events at the moment (basically severe weather, river banks bursting, etc etc) & NOT. For missing people or terrorist. Nor Putin & his mad men.

it works off where your phone is, not where you live.

I've set a reminder on my phone for 5 minutes before it's due to go off, so hopefully there won't be another kind of natural disaster here 💩

I, personally, don't think the actual alarm will be the most useful part of it, but the 'what to do' messaging. Direct message to say xyz river has burst its banks. People in xyz streets need to evacuate, abc place is offering accommodation. Help will be there about 2am if people can't get out by themselves sooner. Type of thing.

im not turning it off, I'm too nosy & I hope the testing will be the only time I ever hear it!!

Does anyone know if the alert will still sound if I am on holiday abroad next week?

@Snowdropsarelovely well that depends where you are on holiday!

Devon- yes
Australia - no

the message goes to phones in the area where the issue is, not where your phone calls home.

The system will run on 4g and 5g.

The 3G network is being phased out from next year

It could be worthwhile leaving the emergency alerts on, as phones that don’t pick it up could find themselves obsolete shortly

Why would it be worthwhile, I don't follow? My phone has 4g and it's three years old, not sure about hers. Next year is a while off and I doubt we will be the among the first to have it switched off, no 5G here.

when there's a threat to life i.e. extreme weather or terrorist attack in the local area.

what about if you're hiding from a terrorise & your phones alarm goes off?

Fair point! Shock

Interestingly I watched BEEF on Netflix recently, and an Amber alert went out as a young girl went missing. All their phones went off with a description. Using it for this sort of thing would be really handy I think, I didn't realise they do that in the US.

😂 I agree

What on earth do people do when their phone rings or their cat sneezes?

dryingstuff · 17/04/2023 11:07

@Sparklfairy I watched a c5 afternoon film years ago about that abduction & how it lead to Amber alert, it is a good idea.

brooksidebackside · 17/04/2023 12:30

What on earth do people do when their phone rings or their cat sneezes?

My phone doesn't ring because as I explained upthread i try to minimise unexpected intrusion.

The cat thing? Just another nasty flippant comment to have a go at people with genuine fear in their lives. I line with hyper vigilance and I can assure you I would take your attitude very very my life any day if the week. Sadly I do what I can to get through and minimise my distress.

Thanks for providing yet another dismissive post designed to belittle people with struggles.
