What happens when I inevitably win big on the lottery tonight

I do the lottery online or on the national Lottery app, and usually when I win small amounts they’ve clearly accidentally left six zeros off I get an email saying there’s new about my ticket and the money is in my account.

But when happens when someone win the jackpot? Is it the same process? Is there just £4,000,000 sitting in their lottery account waiting for then to transfer it to their bank account or do you get a bells and whistles email? Do they call you? Does someone hunt you down and turn up at your house with a big novelty cheque that’s a nightmare to take to the bank?

Obviously it’s my turn tonight to win absolutely all of it but I’m sure it’s yours next. If you reply with the odds of winning the lottery I will not be sharing my spoils with you, just to be clear.

Oh I’m annoyed about the spammer - when I saw this thread was trending again I thought OP might finally have got her win!

@countrygirl99 i got a VPN so I could watch the last two episodes of AJLT whilst abroad. It had the added advantage of being able to log into the national lottery account 😉

If you win more than 50,000 you get an email to phone them.

then somebody comes to your house to validate the winning ticket and you have to prove who you are with a passport or photo card driving license.

if you win big they bring a representative of a bank that is used to dealing with large amounts of money in one account.

they can also bring a financial advisor if you want one

Oooh thank you. Must check my emails better!

I wasn’t really serious about cashing the novelty cheque…

@FutureDays I think if you don’t want your name published you get a bit less of your cash, which makes sense as it’s great PR but I think I’d rather pretend a distant relative I’d never met left me everything.

That doesn't seem fair! How much do they withhold if you don't go public?

I think someone said I was - THANK GOD - for the first and only time in my life wrong.

I won 4,000 once having played online. They sent an email saying how much I won and to contact them. Lots of questions, they needed photo ID and proof of address. The bloke I dealt with was lovely. I did ask was the procedure much different if you won millions and he laughed and said "oh yeah... much different". I presumed you'd have to go in to meet them. They sent me my cheque in the post.

HA yes the MN winner would miss out 😄 as far as I'm aware they do email though.

The MN winner would think it was a scam and delete the email!

I usually follow the draws live online, so I know pretty quickly if I've won something. However, the Euromillions Millionaire Maker results don't appear till the next day.

Ah, that's good, it didn't seem right that they should do this.

@Nanatokidsdogshampsters thats lovely, lucky man!

I’ve always wondered whether buying an actual lucky dip ticket from a shop is better than buying a lucky dip on the lottery app…

I'm not keen on lucky dips, as the numbers aren't evenly distributed, and include numbers which are rarely drawn. I prefer to pick my own numbers based on the probability tables.

skyeisthelimit · 25/11/2024 14:10

They missed up my win this weekend and missed a few 00 off, so I only got £30 instead of the £3,000,000 I was supposed to win.

I did however win a gift on the Post Code Lottery, so selected a small box of Hotel Chocolat to make up for it.

I realise this is an old thread but I have enjoyed reading it op so thank you to your April self for starting it.

It has put me in mind of one of my favourite Groucho Marx quotes: “Money can’t buy you happiness. But if you’ve got enough, you can rent it!”

Cocolapew · 25/11/2024 14:30

Great thread, I too often wonder about how they tell you you've won. Usually while walking the dog and spending my forthcoming millions.
Though I don't actually do the lottery so..🤦
If I did, the bank would take my giant cheque or I'd go somewhere else.
Is it true that if you win big in America, like millions and millions, they won't give it to you all at once but a set amount a month, and if you die it's not passed on?
Doesn't sem fair.

If it's over a certain amount, someone from Camelot will either speak to you on the phone, or come round to your house. And if it's really big amounts, they'll invite you to work with a financial advisor.

What that amount is though... I'm not sure!

TempNCforthis · 20/07/2025 10:34

Do you mean they'd come round after you'd called them, knowing you'd won? It would be a great job if you were breaking the news to them!

Nat6999 · 21/07/2025 23:18

I was part of a syndicate that won £250k on the Thunderball in 2003. You have to ring the number on the back of your ticket or you will get an Email asking you to ring if you played online, then you have to give them the serial number on your ticket & they confirm if you have won. We had a trip to Camelot to receive the cheque, they gave us a proper cheque & then one of those big card ones for photos which we brought back & was used when the photographer for the HMRC magazine came to interview us.

I’ve enjoyed this thread. I’m just wondering if you buy lucky dips in a supermarket and win, why anyone would want proof of your name and address? I mean what would it be proving exactly?
