How do you get dressed when it’s chilly?

I’m currently sitting in my big fluffy dressing gown, building myself up to getting dressed.

I’ll put my pants and trousers on under the gown, then sort of shrug it off my shoulders and drape it over my head so I can wriggle into bra and vest top while still blanketed. Finally, I’ll take a deep breath, fling dressing gown off and squeal like a piglet as I put sweater on as fast as humanly possible.

Not cold enough for heating but too chilly for getting dressed Sad What do you do?

You sound like my drama Queen DH 🤣 every single morning through the winter we get the whole ‘oooooh it’s so coldddddd’ rigmarole. Given his way I think he’d take the duvet, worn as a cloak, into the bathroom to change… it’s the warmest room in our old farmhouse.

This is the first time I’ve ever articulated it. It just struck me this morning as I was steeling myself to take the plunge that there might be a better way. I’ve always accepted it as one of the little torments of life and sort of assumed everyone was like this.

Same as you OP. My kids do it too. DH thinks we are bonkers 😂. If I shower first then I have the towel on with my dressing gown over the top, then continue as OP does once I’m dry.

I do the same towel/dressing gown combo. Great minds and all that Grin

I have a shower, dry myself, put on pants and bra, then clothes, then do makeup, then dry hair.

No opportunity for getting cold. And we live in a very, very old house with windows that don't meet in the middle so breezes everywhere.

I have no part of my brain that computes 'bobbling about in a dressing gown'. I don't own one, but if I'm going to get dressed I do it immediately, I couldn't then stay clean but undressed!

That said I grew up in the North West and was cold until I was 18 and in charge of my own thermostat when I moved out of my parents house!

I'm with you! In the colder months I have to warm up my clothes on a radiator for at least ten minutes and then speed change.

At the moment, if the sun is shining, I stand in the warm patch and attempt to get dressed 🤣🤣🤣

It's a serious job being a cold person!

Great tip re the warm patch. Wouldn’t work for me because the front of my house faces east and I’d be flashing the street, but I bet another tortured dresser will benefit from this nugget of wisdom Smile

Mini radiator on in the closet while I shower, nice and toasty to get dressed, doesn't use that much electricity. I'd never get out of my dressing gown without it.

BonnieGlasses · 14/04/2023 09:04

I live in Scotland and I just get dressed normally, every day of the year. No towel, dressing gown or squealing required. Hmm

BertieBotts · 14/04/2023 09:04

I make a volcano of duvet around me and sit with my head sticking out Grin DH thinks I'm mad.

I don't do mornings or cold. Cold mornings are basically the worst thing ever.

Big fluffy dressing gowns are a gift from the heavens. You are missing out.

I know that Scots are a hardy folk… but not using a towel?! Are you encased in a thin layer of ice each morning? Do you take a quick roll on the carpet to dry yourself or just shake off those shower droplets?

@MangosteenSoda i don't even wear them in hotels. They are horrible things. Always too long or too short, too much fabric around you. If they are cotton they are heavy, if they are synthetic they make you sweaty.

I prefer jogging bottoms and a shrunken one of DHs old cashmere jumpers for my winter house clothes. I may have been known to strategically shrink jumpers every couple of years 😉

Warm shower , finishing with 2 minutes on coldest possible temperature.
Amazing for switching on your brain. You feel warm as soon as you get out.

I didn't think I could do it. I've done it every day for over a year. It's life changing.
No shivering whatsoever.

cobblers123 · 14/04/2023 09:27

I've done this for a good few years now, a tip from my ex sister-in-law. God bless her.

I switch my hairdryer on and blast it for around five or six seconds into my trousers/jeans/jeggings so they are warm and don't feel clammy when I pull them on and do the same to my whatever top I'm going to put on, just blast the hairdryer inside it, then put it on.

It really makes a difference to me as I really loathe the cold and the amount of electricity used is minimal.

Should add, I don't have any heating on in the morning so no radiators to warm things up first.

Quickly.

Chewbecca · 14/04/2023 09:33

I get you!
After shower - 3 towels (body, shoulders, head, towels have been on the rad) and sometimes dressing gown. Back in bed until fairly dry. Then hairdryer on body as well as hair before dressing.
My heating is on in the morning anyway, this is regardless of temperature.

I admire this level of commitment. From reading the responses to this thread, I either need to accept the cold or change my methods. You have provided inspiration Halo

I still have heating on in the morning...Confused

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/04/2023 09:49

When we don't have the heating on in the mornings I warm up our small bathroom with a fan heater (plugged in on the landing) takes 5 minutes. Then hot shower. Then I take the fan heater into the bedroom with me and get dried and dressed standing almost on top of it. I reckon 10 mins worth of fan heater electricity is worth it every day.

I currently shower at night as the heating is always on then but I do the same as you if I shower in the morning. Fan heater blowing into bathroom from the landing for about 15 minutes.

It definitely stops any steam building up and leaving the bathroom cold and damp increasing the risk of mould appearing.

Top half first.

AutisticLegoLover · 14/04/2023 10:49

Quickly. My bedroom is 14 degrees as is the rest of the house. My heating is switched off now. Once I'm dressed it's fine as we are used to the house being this temperature but it's pretty miserable still. Next week it's warming up thankfully.

Ilovetocrochet · 14/04/2023 11:37

I live in the NW as well but my heating is still on so my bedroom is warm in the morning. Today the house got up to the temperature I set (18°) in less than two hours and I don’t think it will drop enough to switch on until late afternoon.

I get dressed sitting on a chair due to pain from arthritis so I’m a bit slow, takes ages getting socks on and fastening my bra!

I do remember getting dressed under the bed covers as a child when we had no heating upstairs and regularly had ice on the inside of the windows. A trip to the bathroom was unpleasant walking in bare feet on the cold Lino on the landing - as was sitting on the freezing cold toilet seat!
