Work event tonight - Really sore throat, would you still go?

I started a new job in January and their annual event is this afternoon/evening. I’ve only met a handful of people so was looking forward to meeting the wider team. Its a huge event with music, food stands and circus entertainers. But i’ve hardly slept because my throat is so sore, and my voice is going, no other symptoms really. Trying to get a docs app…The event is an hour drive there and an hour back so i’m not drinking…would it be unfair to go? I’m guessing its the start of a cold, no clue what the COVID rules are anymore. DS and little ddog taken care of for the evening. I’m a bit torn… so any opinions are welcome.

I’d make the effort to go. Maybe see how you are at lunchtime and then make the decision.

cocksstrideintheevening · 14/04/2023 06:56

Why would you go to the doctor?

If you are I'll don't go regardless of covid.

MrsRickAstley · 14/04/2023 06:57

You don't have to go (for any reason) but also you don't need a doctors appointment for a sore throat. There are no restrictions for COVID anymore and haven't been for a while.

Sounds like you just don't want to go, so don't.

You’re not well - I would sit this one out. Not to be rude, but I genuinely doubt anyone there wants you to go if there’s a risk of you giving them something contagious? At my workplace people regularly come in with chest infections and even Covid etc, it really is a domino effect with others on the team getting ill and going off sick.

Whu · 14/04/2023 06:58

I wouldn’t go. You will feel lousy and potentially spread your virus to many other people. I wouldn’t be bothering the gp for a sore throat though no wonder people can never get appointments.

GoodChat · 14/04/2023 06:58

You don't need a doctors appointment.

Get some herbal sweets, drink loads of water and see how you feel at lunchtime.

itsgettingweird · 14/04/2023 06:58

Strepsils.

Paracetamol before you head off. Ibuprofen whilst there and strepsils.

Paracetamol before you head home!

Covid tests don't even exist now unless performed by a medical facility.

Sore throats existed before covid.

Enjoy!!!!

BendingSpoons · 14/04/2023 07:00

You don't need a doctors appointment. If you are worried about COVID, then take a test. That's how my COVID started including losing my voice. It's probably 50/50 whether it is a cold or COVID. However you don't really sound well enough to go either way. A sore throat keeping you awake at night will be agony talking all evening.

Temporaryname158 · 14/04/2023 07:01

If you don’t feel Ill go!

if I were your employer I’d think a sore throat was a pretty weak reason not to be there. If you check your throat and have tonsillitis thats a different matter but just a sore throat, go and have fun.

gargle with salt water throughout the day. You don’t need a doctors appointment for a sore throat that’s a waste of resources

AlisonDonut · 14/04/2023 07:03

I often have sore throats in the morning due to allergies.

I'd see how I felt at 4pm and then let my boss know if I was feeling like death and going to bed early if I felt too I'll to go to the event.

Mindymomo · 14/04/2023 07:03

Unless you’ve got tonsillitis the doctor won’t give you anything for a sore throat. Difflam spray is very good. We’ve all had sore throats recently, not bad enough to stay in, but doubt we would go out of an evening unless absolutely necessary. I had some old covid tests that were about to expire, so we did test and it wasn’t covid.

Namechange1345677 · 14/04/2023 07:05

The doctors for a sore throat???? No wonder there's never any appointments!

Man up woman! You just don't want to go....

Hotcrossed · 14/04/2023 07:07

any other symptoms?
just a sore throat?

MintJulia · 14/04/2023 07:13

You don't need a doctor's appt.

You probably have a cold, Stay in bed, stay warm, drink fluids, get some sleep and see how you feel at 4pm.

But if still poorly, don't go. No one else wants your cold, and it's forecast cold and wet tonight. Going out will just make it worse.

gkd1234 · 14/04/2023 07:21

Some good pointers above.

I think a sore throat is a weak reason not to go to an important function like this and your new bosses may take a dim view. The advantage to you in going to the function kind of trumps the disadvantage to your colleagues that you might possibly give them something (sorry colleagues!).

Personally I would take my temperature and Covid test; if I had a high fever (but you would know if you did) or tested positive for Covid then I would sit it out without feeling guilty. If it's just a random virus / start of a cold then I would dose myself up and go.

Naimee87 · 14/04/2023 07:22

Yesterday i could barely swallow or eat which made me think of the doctors its just got worse since Wednesday. I hardly ever go to the docs, but felt like it was getting worse fast. I would love to go but i do sound sick and I really think that could piss of other people at the event. It’s more that that’s making me question whether to go or not…

have you tried a salt water gargle?

Naimee87 · 14/04/2023 07:32

I actually attempted a very diluted TCP gargle in the middle of the night…😑 but i’ll head to the chemist this morning see if i can get some tablets or what they reccommend. Just feels like a giant frog in my throat (TMI sorry) and swallowing makes no difference and hurts like crazy…

ginlovingqueen · 14/04/2023 07:48

Yes go

What are you hoping the Doc will do?

Whiskers4 · 14/04/2023 07:48

I don't think many if your colleagues will thank you for spreading whatever you've got, so I'd stay away- you've no idea what they've got planned for the next few days that they'd really like to enjoy. Also, I you're not well, give your body dome time to relax.

UnicornBoom · 14/04/2023 07:52

If you feel too unwell then don't go. But I also wouldn't be going to the doctor's either. You've got a sore throat. Sore throats can be brutal but they tend to go away on their own. Don't be a time waster. You're considering going to a work do, so it can't be that bad.

Could it be quinsy? I know of two unrelated cases of what ended up being quinsy in the last couple of years and I'd never heard of it before.

If so you need antibiotics

woodhill · 14/04/2023 07:53

Yes and also how can you speak to people and have any input

Sometimes better to stay home and recover

Sorry OP I missed your update. If you can't swallow, you would be perfectly reasonable to see your GP.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 14/04/2023 08:04

If you feel well enough to go and enjoy it and talk to people without revolting them or freaking them out, then go. If you don’t, don’t.
If your throat is so swollen that you can’t swallow, then you definitely need to see a doctor.
