Work event tonight - Really sore throat, would you still go?

I started a new job in January and their annual event is this afternoon/evening. I’ve only met a handful of people so was looking forward to meeting the wider team. Its a huge event with music, food stands and circus entertainers. But i’ve hardly slept because my throat is so sore, and my voice is going, no other symptoms really. Trying to get a docs app…The event is an hour drive there and an hour back so i’m not drinking…would it be unfair to go? I’m guessing its the start of a cold, no clue what the COVID rules are anymore. DS and little ddog taken care of for the evening. I’m a bit torn… so any opinions are welcome.

Other than the sore throat i’ve got a bit of a blocked up nose but no other symptoms…no fever! I’d love to go but its more feeling guilty on the other people going in case it brings them down over the next few weeks. I’m trying to think how i’d feel going to a party being in close proximity with someone who knew they were ill. I’m actually off work today swapped my shift so i could go to the event as i’m normally on lates, i’m working tomorrow instead so i’m at just at home…overthinking everything. But appreciate all the advice… its always the way, perfectly healthy when working then you get a chance to let your hair down and your body decides to have other plans 😂

Have you looked in your throat? Could be tonsillitis/ strep if it’s too sore to swallow.

That was my first symptom of covid round 3! Of course, so many other things can cause sore throats. I always think, if you don't feel well enough, don't go. Hope you feel better soon.

that’s because you probably caught this illness from someone at work

Don't go ,you're not well .If you can't swallow you need GP .That won't be possible so get some Difflam and also gargle with salt water.
It may well be Covid -we've all had covid and v sore throat ,runny nose are some of symptoms .
It's not mandatory to test or isolate ,advice is kepp yourself to yourself for 5 days .
There is a new strain which seems very contagious and laughs in the face of vaccinations .
People aren't getting seriously ill and hospitalised like before but it's a nasty virus and personally I'd feel v bad spreading it .Coronavirus is still v unpredictable in how it affects individuals .
Flow flex tests
5 for £5.96

Thanks for all your advice. I ended up feeling quite a bit better as the day went on, got some throat lozengers from the chemist and didnt feel any other symptoms starting. So I went for an hour to show my face and meet the wider team/bigger bosses. But i now feel super guilty because i have woken up with a head cold. 😶

Hi ,sorry you've now got a cold!
Have you tested for Covid? It's spreads so easily and can be so nasty for many people so best to keep a low profile if you do have it .
Current guidelines

What to do if you have tested positiveYou are no longer required to do a COVID-19 rapid lateral flow test if you have symptoms.
But if you or your child have tested positive for COVID-19:

  • try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for a further 3 days after your positive test if you are under 18 years
  • try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for a further 5 days after your positive test if you are 18 or over
  • avoid meeting people who are more likely to get seriously ill from viruses, such as people with a weakened immune system, for a further 10 days after your positive test

Thanks for all that guidance.
We‘ve had such a nightmare at work with people just not coming into the office because they enjoy WFH so much. No company guidelines set yet. I didn‘t feel able to reach anyone sunday evening to help cover for me today so i had to come to meet a new joiner and set up a larger team meeting. Luckily both tasks were done swiftly, hassle free and with limited contact. Guess the upside of having a dull admin job is having to arrange a ton but not having to attend a lot 😂 But i‘m just wanting to go home now…
