Do you have a summerhouse?

And if so, how have you furnished it? Do you use it all year round. Is it worth it?

Well DH has ordered one last night so the decision has been made! Now I have to think about what to put in it, I don't want it rammed full of stuff but want a nice seating area, table etc. It's 10 X 10 ft so any suggestions will be most welcome.

We don’t have a summerhouse, but we do have a barn that has walls on 3 sides and open at the front. It’s wonderful for being outside when weather isn’t great (like this entire winter!), as you can shelter from the rain and it’s great shade on hot days. We have an outdoor kitchen in there with a table and chairs. I think it would depend on whether it would otherwise block your/someone else’s view or be an eyesore though.

Just never store stuff in there. Otherwise you will store stuff in there.

I have a she shed.

It has an electric wall mounted heater, a wine fridge, big flat screen TV with firestick, my piano, a sofa bed, and a kareoke machine.

I use it to do yoga and weights in, practice my piano, watch movies, have girls drinks nights, and it's our guest room... Not ideal for that as guests have to walk up the garden path to the house to use the loo, but OK for the amount of time we have people stay over.

It's used daily, kids have mates over in it... I love it. Decorated beautifully with laminate floor, grey walls, dark blue sofa and orange cushions.

MyMachineAndMe · 14/04/2023 12:45

Yes. We call it out glorified shed and I love it. We only use it when it's warm enough, so from now until about late September. We have pictures of the seaside in the walls, seaside themed cushions on the rattan settee in there, along with a seaside themed quilted throw. On the coffee table there are place mats with lighthouses on. It's like our own little beach hut in the garden and I love it. It's my happy place.

It does need sanding and painting now and new boards for the roof but we've had it years.

I've been umming and ah-ing about whether or not to fit one but this thread has decided me. @earsup idea of sleeping out there in hot weather is pure genius. I'm in.

We had one but got rid of it - too cold in winter, too hot in summer, restricted view. Was good for toy storage and DD used as a Wendy house when younger.

Natsku · 14/04/2023 13:39

I have one, more like a glorified shed really but we put in electricity and lights a couple of years ago. It has a bench on three walls for sitting on and rugs on the floor and the children's summer toys are kept there but a bunch of other stuff is being stored there too at the moment so needs a clear out.

WillowtreeHouse · 14/04/2023 13:59

Our DCs are older teens so they days of storing their outdoor toys are gone now. I kind of just picture a nice outdoor ish space.

Bare in mind, furniture will get damp in winter. Difficult to tell you what to put in there, everyone is different. Ours is 10 by 10. As I said,it now houses my exercise stuff on one side, used to be in spare bedroom,DGKs now stay, then conservatory...got in the way. soon the cushions will come out of their bags in the loft, and there will be chairs in there. Saw a 🛖 at Hampton court flower show, that's what I really wanted!!! Great fun upcycling for a summer house!!

MyMachineAndMe · 17/04/2023 17:24

Ours is bone dry on the inside, even in winter, even though the roofing felt tore and the roof boards need replacing. We have one of those aero360 dehumidifier things in there which helps. We do bring the cushions and the quilt in over the winter though, just in case.

I love ours @listipingce1983 . We've only had it a couple of months but we've used it every day at some point. I love being in there when it's raining, it puts me to sleep!

I've got one. I use it more as a shed at the moment but it's got a lovely little front porch and step area. We've decorated it with plants, bunting, lanterns, fairy lights and put curtains up at the window so no one can actually see it just houses the lawnmower etc 🤣

We do spend a lot of time sitting next to it though. It's in an enclosed, tree heavy end of the garden and is just a really quiet and restful place to be.

We bought one for the garden, 10’ x10’ and I had dreams of getting power in it, setting up a bar etc and sitting there on warm summer evenings, enjoying my lovely south facing garden.

There are two problems with this plan: weather has been shit ever since the thing was built, and my kids have claimed it as their own. It’s now a shed but with glass doors and painted a lovely shade of green.

Iamlikesorry · 21/09/2023 16:45

I haven't got one in my current house. In my old house I sold it as the garden was way to small (it was 3 steps from the back door). But now about to move to a house with a private one acre wrap round garden, and now I think I would actually like one!
