Do you have a summerhouse?

And if so, how have you furnished it? Do you use it all year round. Is it worth it?

Not furnished, never use it, full of crap and spiders.

But it came in handy when I was looking out my window, searching for username inspiration...

WhyDoesItAlways · 13/04/2023 20:27

I have one. Has a hot tub and telescope in it. Love that it's not cold when I get out the hot tub in winter.

earsup · 13/04/2023 20:28

yes, octagon shape with 2 windows, painted in bright colours, use for plants and sometimes sleep in it during the heatwaves, has 2 directors chairs inside and lots and lots of lights inside and out...love it.

ItsThePlayBusDingDing · 13/04/2023 20:29

Yes I do, it's my art studio and I absolutely love it

Wishona · 13/04/2023 20:30

Nope, but I regularly drink in my neighbours one! We often have drinks in gardens (about 8 houses of people), if it’s cold we’ll go to a summer house. Tend to be like a conservatory inside.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/04/2023 20:37

Yes and over the years it's become a glorified shed.

I did love it when it was new and all done up with a nice table and chair set. Was warmer to sit in there on summer nights after a BBQ (and a few drinks...it had a mini fridge too)

igglo · 13/04/2023 20:42

We have one and use it as a reading room / office in the summer. It was there when we moved in, wooden one with electric sockets and light fittings in place. It's quit spacious so we have a desk, swivel chair, two seater sofa, floor lamp, small coffee table, two bean bags, and a smalll book case. Truly it's only used about 4 months in a year - May to September. I would not pay to get it done but don't complain when it's already built.

WillowtreeHouse · 13/04/2023 20:44

I'm in two minds. DH wants one as he thinks we'll use it a lot (would have a lovely sea view), I'm not too convinced. I like the idea of it and I'm not a sun worshipper at all although I love being outside so I could be outside (kind of) but not if you know what I mean. 😂

My neighbors have one and they use it year round. They've got a little heater there

Floribundaflummery · 13/04/2023 21:52

Yes love it and use most of year for coffee, drinks, socialising, bonfire night etc. We have table, coffee table, armchairs and garden chairs and are going to have sleep out and make breakfast on camping gas just for fun. If you've got a sea view OP would be amazing.

Hopedun · 14/04/2023 05:07

We have one and love it. We're going to get it insulated and plasterboarded though to make it more useable.

How do neighbours find this? Appreciate may not have any in this particular instance, but very large free-standing summerhouses/garden rooms are now being built directly up to boundaries in small gardens. How does the noise level affect residents behind and either side?

Of course people can have a noisy bbq or get-together in their garden anyway. But the shelter/warmth of a summerhouse makes this possible on many more nights of the year, plus any hot tubs/sleepovers etc.

What is this like for neighbours in close proximity?

WeWereInParis · 14/04/2023 06:18

My in laws have a little one in a shady corner of the garden. It's got two chairs, and a coffee table. I think they only use it in summer, mainly for sitting and reading when they want to be outside but not in the the sun.
DD1 uses it as a bit of a Wendy house as well.

Doingmybest12 · 14/04/2023 08:31

We have had two in different gardens. Always seems to be in the wrong place either too shady and cold or too hot if sun on it fully. Not good with doors shut, restricted view with doors open. Both became sheds . We have taken the doors off and some of the side off the one we have now and it seems to work better just as a shelter ,with a couple of weather proof chairs anf as open can't be tempted to store extra things.

Hedjwitch · 14/04/2023 08:38

Yes,and best thing we ever did. Has electricity, wifi and beanbags, chairs etc. Use it constantly to sit in and read, relax, drinks in the evening. Sitting in it in the rain is very peaceful too. Love it.

Elphame · 14/04/2023 08:49

Yes. Has electricity so we have wall light and electric heater.

Lovely sitting out there at dusk with a glass of wine and watching the bats and the light fading over Snowdonia

AlisonDonut · 14/04/2023 08:54

Yes. I use mine almost every day. I germinate seedlings in there, have a desk and comfy chair in there, I have a record and cd player in there, with all my CDs and my records. I have long muslin curtains that I put up when all the doors are open in the summer to shade it a bit as it gets very hot once the sun comes out. I have a deck outside with plant pots and have a bed in front which will be full of lovely scented sweet peas and wonderful straw flowers in the summer.

I love it up there apart from when it is raining. Because I have to shut the shutters otherwise the rain comes in at the bottom of the doors so my next task is to put some stuff at the bottom to deflect the water away from the floor.

Isiteveningyet · 14/04/2023 08:56

My friends put one in over a year ago. Fully kitted it out. Tables chairs, fridge, the lot. It’s not been used once. I honestly can’t comprehend why they put it in. They sit outside it with the doors open. But that’s it. No one ever goes and sits in it.

stbrandonsboat · 14/04/2023 08:56

Yes, we use ours all the time. It's a sort of multi purpose area in that it's used for having coffee, reading, drying laundry when it's raining outside and doing hobbies. We have two hanging chairs in ours and we put vinyl floor covering down in the spring to make it more homely. It needs vacuuming from time to time. It has an electricity supply.

Razberryberet · 14/04/2023 09:10

Yes, when we got ours i was full of ideas for it but... It is now the domain of the spiders and has tons of crap in it i I'm hoping to find the time to do it up this summer. We did use it last summer the kids liked to go in it after being in the paddling pool as it gets so hot in the day!! But We have been clearing out the house over the winter n stuff has ended up in there!

Nannyfannybanny · 14/04/2023 09:21

Yes,had a cheap B&Q one in our last garden. Treated ourselves to a good quality one here. Painted black in the end. Has an area of shingle/pebbles/driftwood/shells/fish ornaments outside. Used most of the year. DH has installed insulation, electricity. I have my weight bench,f bike, etc in there now. A tiny fan heater, which I put on about 10 minutes, changed to cold in summer. We live 10 minutes away from the sea, near the south downs, therefore very windy, you can sit inside reading a newspaper, dry the washing in there.

PugInTheHouse · 14/04/2023 09:25

Yes and it's now DHs office however when he worked in there in the evenings he put the supposedly economical heater on which cost us more than £200 a month more for our electric (when it was the old cheap rates) so now it is an unused office and slowly filling up with stuff/junk. It originally was next to a hot tub so had dressing gowns/towels/slippers in and a sofa. We now have a pool table instead in front of it. Clearing it out is on my long list of things to do so we can use it in the summer!

lunar1 · 14/04/2023 09:31

My summer house is my office so it's used every day, it's heated and had full electric/internet etc. it at least gives me a bit of a boundary between work and home!

DCINightingale · 14/04/2023 09:31

There was one already here when we moved. it's quite big with power (and has an amazing mural painted inside it). It has our old big sofa in it and some Conservatory style wicker chairs in it. It's great for keeping the kids outside toys in. We often just open it up in the summer so the kids can go in and out. I do sit in it quite bit in summer, but do have to spring clean it this time of year as over winter we don't really go in it and it becomes a bit of a tip.

GobbieMaggie · 14/04/2023 09:35

Yes we have one but it only really gets used in the summer. The conservatory is heated so we tend to use that in the colder months.
