Thoughtful newborn baby gift thats something you don’t know you need

My daughter has a brilliant worker that we’ve just found out is pregnant and in her last trimester (recent sessions have been virtual so this wasn’t visible before) we would like to buy her something for her first baby that’s a little different but particularly something she might not know she needed/is helpful/unique /special, etc

Budget is about £50 -£60. Thanks in advance x

I'd get a Tuppence and crumble star wrap and a £30 John Lewis voucher. My little baby didn't tolerate being squashed into a pram suit so we used ours every day until he was about 3 months old! I've bought them as baby shower gifts in the past and it's always been the only one/they didn't already have one.

I’d get good toiletries such as child’s farm and weleda. The weleda nappy cream is particularly great. Also the no contact ear thermometers are excellent.

A Contigo travel cup. They can be throw into a bag and knocked around without spilling a drop and they keep drinks hot for a good 6-8 hours.

Piscesmumma1978 · 12/04/2023 13:16

Someone gave us a John Lewis voucher. It was fab because we could get something really nice x

gogohmm · 12/04/2023 13:16

A hamper of small things may be easier, muslin cloths, sleepsuit, socks, anything really. Stay clear of items that some people might be offended by eg bottles, formula, dummies, nipple cream.

To the person who said bottles and formula are useful to those who breastfeed, no they are not, neither of mine had bottles of formula or expressed milk. Stick to more general items

mumtohatty · 12/04/2023 13:16

Lots of lovely muslins, can never have too many!

HappyAsASandboy · 12/04/2023 13:57

Vouchers.

Or a beef casserole. That was by far my favourite present when I had my first.

DrHousecuredme · 12/04/2023 14:05

What I got most practical use of were babygros and vests etc in clothes a few sizes up so 6-9 months, 9-12m etc.
Everybody loves buying cute little newborn (and in our case tiny baby) clothes then once the baby grows out of these it can be a bit of a shock!

DappledThings · 12/04/2023 14:35

Some bottles and some formula, even if you want to breastfeed it can take a while to get going and it’s always handy to have some formula on stock in the cupboard for emergencies.
That really isn't good general advice. One of mine only had a few bottles after he turned about 8 months and second one never had any at all. Would have annoyed me to have formula hanging around going out of date or am assumption I'd need bottles

Another vote for the Tuppence and Crumble star wrap!

ChronicallyCarryingOn · 12/04/2023 18:08

The thing that I wish I had found sooner was my sons tuppence and crumble star blanket - super easy to pop them in and take them out in. My friends have all since purchased and love them. Only £25ish so room in budget for extras. Just incase you wanted something slightly more random!

ChronicallyCarryingOn · 12/04/2023 18:13

Clearly didn’t read the before replies 😂

WutheredOut · 12/04/2023 18:13

Best thing I got was a pile of ready meals from our local farm shop

ObiWanKanobi · 12/04/2023 18:15

I would just be careful if there are any rules regarding receiving gifts from "clients". Some employers have limits on the value of a gift that an employee is able to accept which you might want to check.

Mummyof3Me2021 · 12/04/2023 18:17

Supermarket giftcard or a Boots giftcard. I'd lean more towards supermarket as can use to get food, nappies, clothes etc.

cowsaysmoo · 12/04/2023 18:19

I got really nice stainless steel cutlery set for when baby is older (from Zwilling). I liked it so much I got one for my second dc and they are still using it when they can well use knife and fork. If they won't get lost, I bet my grandchildren will use it too in gazillion years 😅

Sceptre86 · 12/04/2023 18:32

Vouchers were more handy for me than clothes. My eldest was a tiny baby so by time she fit into 3-6 month summer clothes it was winter. With my ds and dd2 I had the opposite problem as they were bigger babies. It would have been more useful to have vouchers so that I could buy things as and when needed and the boring stuff noone wants to but you like vests. I do like things like teething powders, gels, calpol, weaning cups, bowls and spoons as well as overall bibs. They really did come in handy. I steer clear of gifting baby creams and lotions as my own kids have excema and I know many people are particular about what brands they want to use on their child's skin. My mum got me a new water bottle which was nice.

All in all I'd say vouchers, weaning equipment or uber eats type voucher would be a good shout.

Ready made meals, with puffing and prepared veg
Biscuits and tea bags

FirstTimeBoyMum21 · 12/04/2023 22:06

One gift we really appreciated was a weaning book & mini blender. Didn’t need it immediately but could dip in and read in preparation as the baby got older.

Otherwise I’d say some form of meal delivery but I’d also agree with the robe! I bought one in the wee hours and it was such a good buy…so good my partner had to go and get one for himself 🤣

Branchingout2000 · 12/04/2023 22:14

Good quality muslin squares and baby massage oil.

Hardtopickaname · 12/04/2023 22:23

Best gift we got was a pure earth sleep sack that baby started using around 5 months. Can be used all year round and will fit her for a couple of years. Also I don't know if it's related but baby started sleeping through the night. We've bought another 2 since and they are worth every penny.

redyellowpinkbluegreen · 13/04/2023 18:17

Either a voucher or a rockit. Best thing ever

Avarua2 · 14/04/2023 21:32

ooooh an ear thermometer is a good call actually. We still use ours pretty regularly, 13 years into the whole parenting thing.

whoisbruno · 14/04/2023 21:54

How about a post natal massage voucher for the Mum? Especially one that may have a 6 month expiry date so she can choose to go and have a relaxing hour to herself when she can. I would have loved that as a new mum, a few months in!
