What are your easy tasty things to eat? (for recouperating from gastritis?)

I've totally lost my appetite after a bout of gastritis, I've finished taking any medication and feel a lot better but just anxious about putting anything in my mouth as my stomach's been so painful for weeks. Can anyone suggest small things I could try to get back into swing of having regular meals. I am only managing yoghurt and tinned fruit, little bits of tinned macaroni cheese and weirdly cheese and tomato sandwiches. Can't face meat of any kind. My energy is low so anything with much prep (even the sandwich) feels like too much bother sometimes. It's such a vicious circle!

I normally eat like a horse so I promise you this isn't a performative skinny thread - if bloody only!

Omelette?

Boiled egg and toast?
Heinz tomato soup and a cheese sarnie?

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 18:20

I do like an egg. Anything tinned seems to be good and Heinz Tomato is the only soup I like - thanks for reminding me!

Egg
Couscous
Crusty bread with little bit of butter
Pasta salad
Bean salad
Yoghurt and kefir
Broccoli in cheese sauce

These drinks are often prescribed for the elderly, and really for anybody struggling with low energy and reduced appetite.

You can safely have one or two a day in between the actual food you are managing to eat. I‘m using them at the moment, they actually taste ok and each one has 300 calories plus loads of vitamins & minerals. If you have one of your small meals every couple of hours through the day, alternating with one of these, it should help build you up a bit.

Otherwise naice ice cream is good for calories, full fat yogurt and milk, butter instead of spread. I like peanut butter sandwiches with a glass of milk too. Definitely omelettes, or boiled or scrambled eggs, if you’re up to making those.

Soup, to keep your liquid intake up.
Noodles, if you feel like it perhaps stir a beaten egg though, so the egg cooks in the heat, rather like spaghetti carbonara.
Plain cake, such as a Madeleine for a treat to cheer you up.
Toast and jam.

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 18:38

Peanut butter is good, that on toast with real butter. I wish it would magically appear right now, might have a root in the fridge and see if the kids polished off the last jar or not. Not mad on ice cream but I like a lemonade lolly. Thank you these are really helpful suggestions.

Tinned rice pudding
Pitta bread and tsatziki (thick yoghurt, diced cucumber, a bit of mint sauce and a squeeze of lemon)

Yalz · 11/04/2023 18:39

Definitely Heinz Tomato Soup. I reserve it for when I am ill.

If I’m not up to heating a tin of soup (happens sometimes) then their cup-a-soup version is fine, too.

When I had covid last year and lost my appetite for several weeks I developed a strange craving for marmite (preferably in white bread sandwiches) - something I'd never been terribly keen on previously. Curiously I still like it now and always make sure there's a jar in the larder.

Also, ready meal lasagne which I found comforting and soft. Definitely Heinz tomato soup too. I struggled with soft boiled eggs despite usually loving them.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/04/2023 18:46

Pita bread. Chop into strips spread on baking tray, spray with oil and salt generously. Bake until completely crisp and brittle. Perfect!

Wittow · 11/04/2023 18:51

Jacket potato with cottage cheese. Mcain does frozen ones that take 5 mins in a microwave.

Ditto the heinz tomato soup - it must be comfort food for a lot of us.

mumda · 11/04/2023 19:03

Toast.
Egg and toast.
Honey on toast.
Cheese on toast.

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 19:17

Funnily enough the teenagers just had packet lasagne with garlic bread but I didn't get one for myself as I can't face that. Some peanut butter toast is lovely. I do like marmite but need to watch my salt. Just had a very loaded bit of toast with peanut butter. Fortifying.

Raw cabbage is really good for soothing gastritis so I imagine that might be good. Also chamomile tea.

After I had it all I fancied was Weetabix and plain digestive biscuits.

Titsywoo · 11/04/2023 19:30

Pastina - it is comforting and not hard on the digestion. Basically a sort of butter and cheese pasta (using tiny pasta) but a bit more soupy. Lots of recipes online.

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 20:20

Bloody gastritis really does make you want nothing but at the same time you are so hungry. My throat closes up but I can't not eat. Urgh. Had some peanut butter toast and got plenty of water. My staple Mac and cheese in a tin is poised for when everyone is in bed in my a bit. Toast. Simple pasta, cereal.. all good. I like crunchy nut cornflakes but haven't got any in. Tomorrow maybe with full fat milk. Stomach thankfully feeling alright. That's a blessing.

While Omeprazole maybe taming my gastritis and gastric reflux, I find greek yogurt and porridge with soya milk is also helpful at dealing with the volcano erupting in my stomach feeling.

validnumber · 11/04/2023 20:24

Porridge

I made a list of "safe foods" after similar issues recently, I think it's quite personal but here you go. You might overlap in taste with me somewhere.

Smooth oats (as in knock-off readybrek stuff)
Tinned rice pudding
Digestive biscuits
White rice with soy sauce
Egg mayonnaise (light on the mayo, I just eat it mushed up by itself if I can't face a sandwich)
Ready salted crisps
Hummus on toast
Peanut butter on toast
Sliced apples and cheddar
Vanilla ice cream

And my best one - smoothies made with oatmilk (dairy milk too rich for me here), mixed frozen berries, bananas, scoop of peanut butter, and a tin of cannelini beans. I whizz up everything except the milk and freeze it in ice cube trays so I have a complete meal/ snack on a bad day, just pop 4 cubes in a glass and pour over the milk, stir well once defrosted. If you can get someone to do that for you it would help, or if you have the energy to do it once then you have some for another day.

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 20:31

I was on omeprazole for a few weeks and I didn't like it! Made my gut feel like a brick although admittedly not hurty. It did halt the pain as the gastritis healed but the other effects weren't great so now things have calmed I'm trying to get back to normal. I do love greek yogurt and it's an easy thing to eat.

And yoghurt! in the smoothies

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 20:49

I like the idea of smoothies! I just don't have a blender. You said hummus and that's something I've liked on a bit of toast.

Ah sorry! I have my trusty stick blender from tesco. I have chronic digestive problems so it's a lifeline (possibly literally) for me
Hummus on toast is really good though, and nourishing

drawingmaps · 11/04/2023 20:52

You could get those kiddie smoothies from the shops? More expensive for what they are though. I also keep a stock of Ella's kitchen baby puree pouches in for when I'm really unwell, yes they're basically overpriced apple puree but they keep well and they're so smooth they don't cause me any issues
