What are your easy tasty things to eat? (for recouperating from gastritis?)

I've totally lost my appetite after a bout of gastritis, I've finished taking any medication and feel a lot better but just anxious about putting anything in my mouth as my stomach's been so painful for weeks. Can anyone suggest small things I could try to get back into swing of having regular meals. I am only managing yoghurt and tinned fruit, little bits of tinned macaroni cheese and weirdly cheese and tomato sandwiches. Can't face meat of any kind. My energy is low so anything with much prep (even the sandwich) feels like too much bother sometimes. It's such a vicious circle!

I normally eat like a horse so I promise you this isn't a performative skinny thread - if bloody only!

Cheese on toast

Tinned tomato soup

Those Admirals fish pie ready meals as they're basically smooth, slightly rich tasting mashed potato with a bit of white fish in there!

A jacket potato with beans or melted cheese

Egg noodles with a sauce made from soy sauce, spoonful of peanut butter, squeezy garlic puree and a drizzle of honey. Just warm the sauce ingredients up in a pan as the egg noodles boil then stir together. Takes 3 minutes.

Rice, broccoli and soy sauce.

scrambled egg.
home made egg fried rice.

I like eggs!

Boiled rice with soy sauce.

If you can handle it, add spring onion/scrambled egg/bacon

When I’m having a flare I literally live on rice from a pouch, chopped courgette or other bland green veg (not brassicas, ouch) and a salmon fillet in a bowl, pop a cover on loosely and microwave for about 2.5 minutes. Sprinkle of soy and that’s it.

else it’s oatcakes or buttered white toast, flat sparkling water ice ice cold and emergency Haribo if I go wobbly.

You have my utmost sympathies, it’s horrific

Watching with interest as I've been ill in bed since Thursday and not eaten either, so feel really lightheaded and weak. I had a small bowl of tomato soup yesterday, and had my first attempt at dinner today, with a baked potato and some cauliflower cheese (very small portions).

It's a vicious circle - the less you are able to take in the more crap you feel but even if normally you'd eat anything, when you've been unwell it can be like trying to swallow cotton wool. But you need to eat to function. I don't give a damn about my body image or weight I just can't seem to get food in my mouth. But I have had some peanut toast and some macaroni out the tin. Thank you x

Glad you’ve managed to eat this evening 🙂

Do think about trying those meal replacement drinks from Amazon I linked upthread though- they’re so easy to put in your mouth and swallow!

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 11/04/2023 22:36

Thanks @GiantKitten I think I'll order some thank you, I drink a lot of water and squash (not ideal with sensitive stomach) and drinks are definitely easier.

Mash and gravy?
Cheesy mash?
Apple crumble?

rickandmorts · 11/04/2023 22:49

It's a niche suggestion but Rachel's organic rice pudding is delicious, I always crave it when I'm ill. Must be eaten cold straight from the pot for maximum yum.

Sorry another niche one but M&S fancy custard is amazing too. Might be nice over your tinned fruit? Also really nice cold so minimum effort x

Watch out for acidic foods like tomato soup. It’s great if you’ve had another type of illness such as flu, but not good for gastritis. Aim for bland starchy foods like rice pudding, bananas, toast with jam, custard, eggs, mashed potato etc.

Not a meal but kefir is a lifesaver for me when I'm in a gastritis flare up. Honestly, I think it does more to heal my stomach than omeprazole ever did. If I feel those niggle pains starting I can often keep them at bay by getting some kefir on the go quickly. Wonderful stuff.

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 12/04/2023 11:07

@ShannonMcFarland I think that's why I've been eating so much yoghurt (natural bio yoghurt) as it has an antacid effect - similar thing maybe!

When I've had upset stomach due to IBS flare ups I follow the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast. Jar apple sauce on toast is particularly good. Not sure if it would work after what you've had, but thought I'd mention it.

@ShannonMcFarland my dd gets really upset stomachs due to medication and finds the stomach protectors don't help all the time. I wonder if kefir would help her? Worth a try I guess, so thank you for mentioning it.

LuckyDipForTheEuro · 12/04/2023 21:08

I'm following your advice thanks everyone. Had some bio yoghurt with tinned pears and then some cheese on toast so getting some fuel in along with the andrews powders (more effective for me than omezaprole). Got a box of eggs in but haven't tackled them yet but would be good for a bit of scramble or a fried one on a slice of toast. Gastritis is tricky because most pain relief irritate the gut so you sort of have to work through it and manage it without!

Not experienced your illness, so apologies if these are way off the mark.

when I was off my food for another reason, I used to spoon ripe Avocado from the shell.

Other things I enjoyed:

Grated cheese in the base of a bowl with Heinz tomato soup on top - it's lovely, and will bulk it out, with plain toast to dip in.

Ready Brek - what Mum used to give us when we were ill

Tinned rice pudding

Baked potato or mashed potato, plain or topped with beans and cheese

If you're managing yoghurt, what about overnight oats? You can add in grated apple or pear

Nigella's marmite spaghetti

Hawaiian toast (toast with ham, a slice of pineapple, topped with cheese and grill). Leave out the ham if you don't fancy it

Uhhh... I know this thread has been dead a while, but I need to make these points before someone takes any of this silly advice and makes everything worse.
Tomatoes are no good for gastritis. Nor is anything fatty. I've seen people recommended tomato soup, carbonara, peanut butter sandwiches... Please ffs... If you don't understand the condition, do not make a suggestion. I know people want to help but stabbing around in the dark is no good.
Gastritis is best treated with bland, non acidic foods. That means no cheese, no cheddar cheese, Mac and cheese, butter and cheese pasta, cheese on toast... also to be avoided are other dairy products or things that are acidic, high in fat or sugar. This includes tinned rice pudding, ice cream, "crunchy nut cornflakes with full fat milk" (as someone wanted above), biscuits, "Hawaiian toast (toast with ham, a slice of pineapple, topped with cheese and grill)"
Bland diet means bland. No sauces, mayonnaise, seasonings, no nothing.
Cucumber can cause reflux, so I wouldn't bother with that either.
NO SUGAR!!
Avoid breads, choose rice, whole grains, unseasoned corn chips.
Stick to grilled chicken, high omega fish, nuts, pulses, boiled potatoes. Eat small portions. Drink plenty of water. No fizzy stuff.
A little bit of marmite is good to put back the folic acid and b12 that you tend to become deficient in when you have gastritis.
The only seasoning you need to have is a little pinch of salt when you read some of the stuff written in these threads when they're written by kind hearted people without any clue of what they're talking about.

No offense intended, but at least 60 percent of the advice here is guaranteed to exacerbate the symptoms of gastritis.

Omeprizole btw is probably the only certainty to aid anything. Somebody said above it made their gut feel like a brick. That's not normal.
This medicine closes up the tubes that produce and feed acid into the stomach, thereby reducing the acidity there. The only sensation you should experience is relief from reflux and the burn that characterises the symptoms that lead to a diagnosis of gastritis. Nothing more.
If you feel like a brick after taking it, please do consider its cause may be something else and avoid saying anything that may put others off it. It could be the difference between a bout of gastritis that can last days or years. Proper care and treatment is the only way to resolve it.
If you have a diet that's too rich in gluten, saturated fat, sugar, lactose, caffeine, alcohol, hot spice and acidic ingredients, then you're at higher risk of being symptomatic of gastritis. Same goes if you over eat, eat at irregular times, fast too much to lose weight.
Just have a healthy balanced diet, eat at normal times and you'll probably avoid any instances of gastric distress.
If you do ever get it, stick to chicken, both, water, leafy greens, apple sauce and whole grains. Your symptoms will abate in days rather than weeks.

I am not a doctor, but I am qualified by having experience of this condition and have been hospitalised more than once.
