Would you expect to know results of blood test?

rickandmorts · 11/04/2023 12:06

Had a blood test last week as I haven't been feeling myself and the gp receptionist has just rung me now and said my results were borderline so I need another blood test. I asked what it was borderline for and she said 'I don't know I'm just reading the results off the screen' so I said okay, is there any way I can find out what it's borderline for? And she said no 😂. So now I'm getting another blood test but I have no idea why! I'm not being OTT to wonder what it's borderline for am I? I presume if I ring back I'll either talk to the same receptionist or another one who'll just look up my record and tell me the same thing?

If you have the nhs app you should be able to look at your medical records and see the results, someone on here can help interpret if google wont help.

Yummymummy2020 · 11/04/2023 12:11

Definitely not unreasonable to want to know op😂😂😂 this is bizarre that they wouldn’t even get someone to call you back to discuss the results if there was any issue!

GCWorkNightmare · 11/04/2023 12:12

NHS App is England only.

I requested a printed copy of mine and was told I could only have them because they were all normal. Anything else would have required a drs appt.

We should be able to access our medical records online somehow.

TheDogsMother · 11/04/2023 12:15

Can you get the NHS app ? It has details of all of your medical history including the detail of blood tests. I have recently had two borderline tests and was able to look up exactly what part of the test was the issue.

I got a new phone and haven't downloaded the NHS app on to it so will try download it and log in now, see if that gives me any more ideas. Thanks!

Honestly, she got me wondering because she was so sharp in her reply 😂 I know, so now I'm booked in for another blood test and I have no idea why!!

You should ask to speak with your gp

I'm in England so will give it a go and download it. That's frustrating as appointments are hard to get 😩

The app also gives reference ranges so you can see which ones are in range and which ones are a concern. If you click the link it will also tell you what the test is for which can be helpful!

rickandmorts · 11/04/2023 12:22

Oh excellent! Struggling to download the app on my phone (basically my phone is shit 😩) so will wait til DP gets home from work and download it on his and log in.

Think you can log in online too so not just on the app.

Bearpawk · 11/04/2023 12:45

In my surgery the receptionists aren't able to give you info on the results, you'd get a gp appt but they may want to run another test to be sure first.
As others have said they may be available online or you can request a copy, I expect the nurse who does your next bloods will be able to tell you which ones they are re running.

Lellochip · 11/04/2023 12:45

The NHS app doesn't necessarily show you anything, you have to specifically contact your GP to ask

Mushroo · 11/04/2023 12:47

For mine I had to fill out a form on the GP website and they send them. They don’t appear on the app unless the GP has enabled that bit.

No idea why they are so secretive about it! They can’t refuse to share under GDPR

Redshoeblueshoe · 11/04/2023 12:48

I've just done this. When I rang for my results they gave me a phone appointment with a GP to go through them,

Somanysocks · 11/04/2023 12:51

I went into my surgery and the receptionist printed a copy for me.

BungleandGeorge · 11/04/2023 12:54

Receptionists generally don’t have clinical qualifications so are not allowed to give specific results out over the phone. You usually have to request additional access rights from your surgery to look at results over the nhs app so you may not be able to view them immediately. If you go and pick up the blood forms it will generally state what they are testing and why so you’ll probably be able to tell from there

rickandmorts · 11/04/2023 13:04

Thanks for the additional replies! My blood test isn't til next week so it's a while to wait to ask the nurse, but I guess if it was urgent they'd tell me. If I'm passing the surgery I'll call in and see if they can tell me anymore info/ give me a form if I don't get anywhere with the NHS app/ website. I don't want to waste a gp appt, I'm just curious as to why I need another test!

Fairyliz · 11/04/2023 13:47

I had exactly the same problem. Receptionist wouldn’t tell me and got quite stroppy when I asked why not as they are my results.
Finally managed to speak to the practice manager who said it was because they might give you the wrong results. In the end I asked for a printed copy which I collected, which also contained another patients records!
As you can imagine aim not very impressed with this surgery, you can’t actually see a doctor only nurses and nurse practitioner and now this.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/04/2023 14:27

The obstacles defy logic these days don't they?!
In addition to the nhs app, my surgery has an app called Airmid which I can see my results on, and some recent medical history
Do you have anything like that in your area?
Otherwise try asking for a call back from duty doctor, worth a try

Mine apparently have this too now, assuming it shows me as much useful information as both the surgery's own website and the NHS app.

That said, I've gone as far as literally being handed a print out, and still no one telling me that I had a deficiency, so getting useful info is blood from a stone it seems

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/04/2023 15:16

Yes Airmid isn't a revelation but I can at least order repeat prescriptions.. and even book an appointment in 6 weeks time.. nothing before that of course!
I think I also had to sign to gain access to my basics like vaccines
Blood results are likely sensitive information so not available!

StaceySolomonSwash · 11/04/2023 15:22

Our surgery has Systmonline so we can book appointments (when available 😆) request repeat prescriptions and look at records of tests - it gives the tests done and the normal range that they'd expect.

This isn't a universal thing. Many surgeries and hospitals are not signed up to share medical record via the app.

Most I can get it some prescriptions I've had over the past few years.
