A day in Leicester City Centre

I'm in Leicester for a day qthis week.
I used to go there regularly ... 25 years ago
The cathedral is closed so I can't go to see Richard
I know the shopping centre I used to wander around in closed.
I just to like to stare and the door knobs and light switches in Broughtons, but they moved.
What are the highlights now?

Isn't the RIII Visitor Centre open?

Guildhall and Museum

Highcross Shopping Centre

The little streets from the High Street going towards the market have been massively tarted up - worth a wander round just to see.

Castle Gardens and walk along the canal if the weather is nice.

New Walk Museum? Don't know what it's like now, didn't manage to get there on a recent visit.

HappyHolidai · 10/04/2023 19:15

Rossa's doughnuts by the market. A must for any visit to Leicester

ClemmyTine · 10/04/2023 20:10

Get a bus to Melton rd and have a look at all the Indian shops on the 'Golden Mile'

NoEffingWay · 10/04/2023 20:46

The Guildhall has been smartened up, and the Richard III stuff is decent too.

Are you with kids OP? Would recommend Social Climbing, The Lanes bowling and arcades, and the Sixes Cricket or the Crazy Golf place near the Highcross.

Glitterbiscuits · 10/04/2023 21:08

No kids, just a grumpy husband.

@Glitterbiscuits Grin. In that case, there are some nice pubs and restaurants around the city- I recommend Casa Romana for Italian especially.

SmileyPaella · 10/04/2023 22:02

The R3rd attraction is brilliant

Babyroobs · 10/04/2023 22:07

If you like Indian food there is a nice vegetarian place called herb that does a nice thali - apparently the business lunch thali is the best. New walk museum has something on most of the time, Highcross shopping centre is ok and then the nice little shops close by at St martins square.

Wenfy · 10/04/2023 22:08

The entire area behind Guidhall / Market St has been developed now. Suggest wondering down Loseby Lanes for a bit to eat - the Merchent of Venice is an amazing cafe / italian restaurant. Veeno’s is good too for drinks and Italian afternoon tea.

In terms of things to do - mini golf at highcross, a tour of guildhall, cinema. Or you could drive out of the city centre: Google Everards Meadows - it’s a large section of hiking land by the river owned by Everard’s Brewery. Gorgeous on a sunny day & across the road from Fosse Park.

otherwayup · 10/04/2023 22:09

Which shopping centre is closed op?
I'm intrigued!

Kayal on London Road is much, much, much better and not that much further away.

It is owned by the same people. Kayal is the non vegetarian bit and Herb the vegetarian one. They are just across the road from each other. I tend to think kayal is more expensive and probably more of an evening place, but both nice.

Maybe shires that turned into Highcross?

Babyroobs · 10/04/2023 22:14

I also like the Good earth veggie restaurant for lunch ! Have been going there for nearly 40 years since I was a teenager and it hasn't changed !!! You can get away with sitting there for hours !

mamaduckbone · 10/04/2023 22:17

Have lunch in St Martins square - Crafty St Martins is excellent, and apparently so is Mowgli, which is Indian tapas.
The little shops around the High Street are nice for a wander, and New Walk Museum has been smartened up.
Highcross is OK for high street shops.
Make sure you look out for the street art - there's a festival called Bring the Paint every couple of years and there are some incredible pieces all around the city - you can probably find a guide online.

I haven't been there since I was a teenager - didn't realise it was still open!

The Richard III Visitors Centre is fantastic - so interesting.

It's exactly the same as 40 years ago. I swear they are still serving tea in the same cups ! you should re-visit !!

ODFOx · 10/04/2023 22:24

Is the Van Gogh immersive experience still running? We loved it.

Yes that’s why I don’t understand the quality difference. The veg stuff is better made in Kayyal than Herb - it seems to be a tourist trap. Not sure if OP is Indian or knows her South Indian food but if she is, she’ll be better off in Kayyal.

There hasn't been a shopping centre closed down? The Shires has just been renamed High Cross. The Haymarket is still there.

Glitterbiscuits · 10/04/2023 22:33

The Shires was the shopping centre.
Although I remember the high street being quite good too.

OP posts:
Anycolouryoulike · 10/04/2023 22:39

The Shires is still there. It's just called Highcross now and is bigger. There's more shops, a John Lewis and quite a few eating places and a cinema.

If you want an absolutely filthy toasted sandwich dripping with calories then Deli-ish off Charles Street does a hog roast melt, freshly roasted pork with applesauce, cheese, spring onion, thickly cut white bread griddled in butter.

Alternatively you can walk along the canal to Bitsy's Emporium of Awesome (that is actually the name!) for a truly ridiculous toastie and slice of cake. www.facebook.com/bitsysemporium/?locale=en_GB

Delish does the best breakfast cobs.
