A tin opener that works.

Help me Mumsnet, I really need a decent tin opener. I have arthritis in my hands and struggle with all different types. I know an electric tin opener is an obvious solution, but I really don't have work surface space in my cramped kitchen.

I really just want one that clamps properly and turns well that won't stop working after 6 months. Seems to be a difficult thing for me to find, that or I have just been very unlucky with rubbish buys.

If you’ve landed here looking for advice on which kitchen tools to buy, we’ve recently updated our best can opener guide with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved options for easy opening. We hope it’s helpful.

Seriously though. Totally reliable. Had mine for well over a decade

Brabantia.
Buy cheap. Buy twice.

Oh that's an interesting design. I will have a read of reviews!

We have an Oxo one and it’s great. We got it from a supermarket but I think they’re on Amazon too. It clamps well, never slips, and turns really smoothly.

Sausagis · 10/04/2023 18:45

Brabantia.

I purchased this in 2012. I run it through the dishwasher once a year :)

Sausagis · 10/04/2023 18:46

... mind you it was £5.77 in 2012, and it's now £17!!

newtb · 10/04/2023 18:48

Have either an oxo one, or a good grips one.

Lemevoir · 10/04/2023 18:50

Brabantia here as well. Can't remember when I bought it as it was years ago, but it has never needed to be replaced.

Lionoso · 10/04/2023 18:50

I have had a Brabantia one. I really struggled with my hands with it. Just too much pressure needed with my useless hands.

I have an Oxo one and find it easy to use without much force.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 10/04/2023 18:55

We have a good grips one and it's very smooth to open tins and the handle is large and easy to turn, still very manual if you're struggling with your hands.

Lionoso · 10/04/2023 19:54

Oh that's interesting, don't think I have seen that one before. Off to read reviews of it. I see it works for ringpulls too. Ringpulls I always have to wedge the pull bit up with a butter knife or something.

Thank you mumsnetters for help with such a mundane purchase!

We have an older version of [[https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/koncis-can-opener-stainless-steel-00081534/ from Ikea, it's probably about 20 years old and still going strong.

However, I bought another one for work and the newer version is not as sturdy but it's still hanging in there maybe 5+ years later.

But that Procook one looks good, especially given that you suffer with Arthritis. I think in your shoes I would buy that one, possibly going to a shop if you have one locally so you can assess it in person prior to committing.

Was about to suggest an oxo one.

This: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Culinare-Lift-Off-Can-Opener/dp/B0009G59Z6. I think we inherited from DH's uni stuff yonks ago and still going strong. Gives me strange joy to use!

I also have the Culinare & find it easy to use

This is brilliant. I've had one for years and have bought it for other people too. Joseph Joseph Can-Do Compact Can Opener, Tin Opener with automatic grip, White/Green, Small https://amzn.eu/d/3QGx8JS

I love the Oxo Good Grips one, but when my rheumatoid arthritis first flared up I couldn’t use it so I got this one.

I find they all get so greasy and gooey after a while that they inevitably become less operable.

Borborygmus · 10/04/2023 23:40

Kuhn Rikon works for me:

IloveJudgeJudy · 10/04/2023 23:41

I can't link anything on the app but I have a Kuhn Rikon one that's a can opener, bottle opener, ring pull lifter and a couple of other things. You just put it on top of the tin and start turning the handle not sets itself up. It's great.
