A tin opener that works.

Help me Mumsnet, I really need a decent tin opener. I have arthritis in my hands and struggle with all different types. I know an electric tin opener is an obvious solution, but I really don't have work surface space in my cramped kitchen.

I really just want one that clamps properly and turns well that won't stop working after 6 months. Seems to be a difficult thing for me to find, that or I have just been very unlucky with rubbish buys.

If you’ve landed here looking for advice on which kitchen tools to buy, we’ve recently updated our best can opener guide with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved options for easy opening. We hope it’s helpful.

How funny, @Borborygmus I've got the master opener.

M&S Oxo tin opener is the best.

Brabantia is the best
I struggle with grip too and this is effortless for me

Oh that's interesting, don't think I have seen that one before. Off to read reviews of it. I see it works for ringpulls too. Ringpulls I always have to wedge the pull bit up with a butter knife or something.

Thank you mumsnetters for help with such a mundane purchase!

I've got something from Lakeland that opens ringpull cans easily. It looks like cheap blue plastic that will break but its actually quite strong.

I bought a replacement for my Swan electric one yesterday. I hope the new one does as well as the old one: the plastic cracked this week after regular use since I received it as a wedding gift in 1989.

I have never kept it on the worktop, but on a shelf in the cupboard. I would certainly recommend an electric to you OP.

Brabantia.

I purchased this in 2012. I run it through the dishwasher once a year :)

We had this but Dh for some reason decided to replace it!
On our second new tin opener, and opening a tin now causes me major stress!!Hmm

Another vote for the Oxo one. Had mine a couple of years now and it's still going strong.

I wanted to update this thread with the can opener I found. It's this one.

I bought it in Sainsbury's one day as it was on offer, expecting it to be useless for me but fine for my husband to use. Turns out it's the best mechanical opener I have ever had!

It can be a wee bit tricky to get it to clamp, but once it has it just glides through the tin. It's so easy on my poor useless hands. Even with my rubbish grip I can open tuna easily at last. I know it's a mundane thing to get excited about, but usually I'm swearing at tins in frustration.

I have used it loads now and it's still working great. I still need an electric one probably but this is a great option.
