Potty Training, need to go out tomorrow.

Needing some advice on potty training please!

I have various things I need to do and appointments to go to tomorrow, so will be out for a good chunk of the day. Probably 4-5 hours.

We 'accidentally' started toilet training DD (not long turned 2) as she was running around naked in between getting her dressed and she sat on her potty and did a wee! After lots of fuss and praise, she has gone on the potty (along with a few accidents) and only worn a nappy at nighttime / nap time. She comes with me to use the toilet and we flush the poo in the toilet etc and we're reading books to her.

She hasn't sat on the toilet at all yet as she seems to be comfortable with the potty.

What do I do tomorrow when I have to go out, do I put her in a nappy? Or try and get her to go on the toilet? Or shall I commit a few more days at home and cancel the appointments?
TIA!

How many days have you been potty training for?

Wittow · 10/04/2023 16:50

Stick a pull up on her and get on with your day.

Aerosarethebest · 10/04/2023 16:50

Get some pull ups, use those like pants on occasions like this where you can’t be near a familiar potty/toilet set up- so aim for wees in the toilet but don’t worry if it doesn’t work.

Don't cancel your appointments!

Will you be able to easily access a toilet/change her if necessary? Take enough spare clothes to allow for lots of changes and some nappies just incase it all goes wrong.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/04/2023 16:51

Stick her in a nappy for going out, when you go into places with toilets take her to the loo and say she can use the big toilet if she wants. Then she has options but no horrible unnecessary consequences if she has an accident.

Wispawispawispa · 10/04/2023 16:52

My dd was 2 when she potty trained. In my experience don’t go back to nappies or pull ups in the day. It confuses them. You’re committed now.

Ideally you’d be best to stay at home but take a plenty of spare clothes, knickers and line car seat push chair with puppy pads. Offer potty at every chance and just go for it. Good luck.

Aerosarethebest · 10/04/2023 16:52

Plan a couple of stops in somewhere with good toilets. Bonus if they have kid sized ones. IKEA does in my experience. Somewhere like McDonalds with a kids playground might.

MuffinToSeeHere · 10/04/2023 16:53

I'd put her in pull ups and maybe look at getting a travel potty, we had a my carry potty and it was a life saver when DS started potty training.

Twizbe · 10/04/2023 16:54

Plan on toilet stops.

Make sure she does a 'going out wee' before you leave.

Use a pull up just in case, but go to the toilet for a 'tactical wee' whenever the opportunity arises.

With girls it's easy to just hold them over the toilet, but take a potty just in case.

Mrsjayy · 10/04/2023 16:54

Stick her nappy on if she asks try and take to a toilet if not get her to have a try, if you pass a toilet you can't put your day on hold that's just silly

LysHastighed · 10/04/2023 16:56

I wouldn’t use a nappy or pull-up if you can avoid it (pull-ups are only nappies with a different way of closing and the kids understand this perfectly).
I used to set an alarm on my watch and go to the toilet every hour (or forty minutes in the first couple of days).
However, if the appointments are easily postponable why not move some or all?

This is not true. I potty trained all 3 of my DC at 2 and none of them were confused by wearing pull ups when out and about during the early days of potty training. I think it's cruel to put a small child in a situation where they know they want to pee but there are no facilities and they wet themselves. They learn nothing from that. But if you use pullups they have the option to hold it in until they are at a toilet (all of mine did) but if they can't there's the safety net of the pullups.

Pull ups over pants plus toilet stops....a porta potee by tomee tippee is good doubles as potty using disposal bags or toilet seat .

UnderPressureLikeACustomerInALushStore · 10/04/2023 17:01

Thanks everyone. I'm a bit apprehensive to put her back in a nappy / pull up in case it confuses her. We're on day 4. I can move my appointments as they aren't vital if it's worth staying home with her for another day? She hasn't worn a nappy during the day at all for 4 days so im unsure on what to do!

She's going to the childminders on Thursday and the CM has said she will continue training her there too.

Thanks for the advice so far and will definitely look into a travel potty!

Over pants seems a good idea!

My 4 children didn't get confused when put in nappies to go to the shops. I had no car and no public toilets near where we were living,

nicknamehelp · 10/04/2023 17:19

Put potty in a bag. In another have bits to wipe it out with. Take plenty of changes with you and just make sure stop at every toilet you pass. If you keep switching from pants to pullups/nappies will confuse her ant take you longer in the long term.

I'm a cm and it's what I do if we're out take off as soon as we're in.

FlounderingFruitcake · 10/04/2023 17:25

Put a potty under the pram and take antibac wipes to clean it out. Take her into the loo to try every hour or so. Then I would do a pull up just in case but over her underwear so it doesn’t have the nappy feel. Take pairs of pants and pull ups in case she doesn’t make it. Don’t stress it, an accident isn’t the end of the world.

AnonymousArabella · 10/04/2023 17:27

Just go for it. Take plenty of spare clothes and plan in strategic toilet stops. What’s the worst that could happen?

FWIW both my dc trained at just past 2 and we never needed to carry a potty with us, put them back in nappies or use pull ups.

Travel wee before you go, then go to the loo every 40 mins or so while out. There’s every chance it will be completely fine :)

Get her to use the actual loo at home this afternoon as well (hold her on it) so she’s had a little practice.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 10/04/2023 17:33

Put the potty under the pushchair with a kitchen roll and bags to dispose of anything. Plenty of toilet stops you sit on toilet she sits on potty and tip away. In an emergency whip the potty out as discreetly as possible not in the middle of costa

take spare clothes
couple of muslins on the car seat/pushchair to help catch
invest in a travel potty. We had a potette travel which had bags with absorbent pad and folds small.

if you have had 4 dry days at home you'll be fine

WeightoftheWorld · 10/04/2023 17:48

Tbh if you can move your appointments easily I'd just do that. We potty trained our DD around that age and it was just easier not to have to worry about long outings on day 4. Definitely don't put a nappy or pull up or any sort on her during the daytime. I'd buy a travel potty and take that out with you when you do need to go on any outings. We used the carry potty which DD used happily when out before she got the hang of toilets.

Mine were never confused either pull ups were expensive when mine were toddlers I used to put a nappy on them In the early they could still say when they needed the toilet.

hels71 · 10/04/2023 17:52

I occasionally put my DD in pull ups when we went out in the early days. I told her they were special big girl going out pants for just in case we couldn't find a loo..
