If you had 20% off everything in a supermarket…

.. What would you buy??

I’m leaving my supermarket job shortly where you usually get 10% staff discount, but for the bank holiday the discount is increased to 20%.

What would you buy to ‘stock up’ for the final time and how much of each item would you get? Fairly flexible on finances as I have a 0% credit card and new job lined up to start soon

Alcohol, cleaning supplies, toiletries, kids clothes, school uniform. Coffee/tea.

TheSproutOfWrath · 09/04/2023 18:51

Lamb and Steak to freeze. Not had them for so long thanks to the price hikes. Oh, and a large whole Chicken!

Popskipiekin · 09/04/2023 18:53

Pricy things that keep. Eg washing powder, alcohol, nice shampoo, multipacks of store cupboard goods. I’d treat myself to some fish / meat which could be frozen.

Sunshineandrainbow · 09/04/2023 18:53

Toilet roll and butter

CornishTiger · 09/04/2023 18:55

Coffee. Laundry and cleaning products. Alcohol if you want it. Toilet rolls. Kitchen roll.

Good luck with new job.

SlipSlidinAway · 09/04/2023 19:02

Wine
Washing capsules
Ground coffee
Dog food
Loo Rolls

CPandme · 09/04/2023 19:02

Things above and maybe one/couple of luxury items for each in the house you couldn’t justify at full price- maybe more expensive brand of a basic or whatever you love but just don’t buy. Same if you have someone’s special birthday or anniversary present to buy for.

SupermarketSue · 09/04/2023 19:16

Thanks, really helpful in adding to my list! Detergents, wine & toilet were top of my list already (no kids!). Love the idea of a nice treat for myself + presents too, thanks!

Gin

SupermarketSue · 09/04/2023 19:24

Arapawa · 09/04/2023 19:19

Gin

Sadly no discount on spirits (or stamps, lottery or petrol!)

Does it really matter what you spend the cash you have available on? You still save 20%.

I would buy stuff you know you'll normally have to buy, definitely will use, and keep the money you save aside for treats you can choose at your leisure (and not from the supermarket!)

LividHouse · 09/04/2023 19:24

Butter can freeze.

Shitloads of laundry powder and loo rolls.

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 09/04/2023 19:26

Anything non-grocery? Household items (towels/bedding etc) or clothes that you need?

TeaDrinker247 · 09/04/2023 19:28

Items you typically get but are on a good offer.
Things that have a long shelf life.
Items that are easy to store.

SeeWhatYouGetWhenYouAskAStupidQuestion · 09/04/2023 19:29

Meat, fish, packet stuff, eggs, breakfast cereals. The fish and meat can be frozen, and all the other stuff will last

frozendaisy · 09/04/2023 19:32

Extra virgin olive oil
Fancy vinegar
Maple syrup
Mouthwash
Grass seed

Custardbanana · 09/04/2023 19:34

I'd but just a normal shop and remind myself what it was like at 2022 prices.

SushiSuave · 09/04/2023 19:38

Beans!

SupermarketSue · 09/04/2023 19:40

Yes to new towels! Although it’s one of the pricier supermarkets so will need to check if it works out better vs just buying elsewhere. Also the mouthwash & olive oil, forgot about those, thanks

I appreciate the comments on just buying a normal shop and appreciating the saving but I can’t help thinking I should stock up and buy more than usual!

it depends on supermarket for me and what you usually buy. In some supermarkets you can buy everything including clothes.

pizzaHeart · 09/04/2023 19:44

Jam, olives, mayonnaise, tuna steak, tea, coffee, cacao powder, sea salt, food bags, paracetamol and other medicines you use, tampons/ pads, kitchen towels, suncream.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 09/04/2023 19:49

Tea, wine, ale, jam, marmalade, Nutella, crisps, olive oil, shampoo, conditioner, birthday cards for the foreseeable. A few fillet steaks for the freezer too.

SupermarketSue · 09/04/2023 19:58

Do you think steaks will freeze & defrost ok? Never tried it before!
