Just so many dogs nowadays, or is it just me?

Away for the weekend at a typical British seaside town in Anglia and am quite shocked at just how many people have dogs now. Am sure there never used to be quite this many, or maybe I am just more observant now I have a child who isn’t keen (on bigger dogs).

Reckon I’ve seen well in the hundreds today, I’d say at least every other family or couple had a dog. So many labradoodles / toy poodles, cockerpoo’s, pugs everywhere.

Some people looked to be almost dragging dogs around the shops in really busy / small lanes of endless gift shops, then waiting for friends/family outside shops (as no dogs allowed) some with fairly stressed looking dogs😢

Is this the lockdown puppy effect in full force now? Just everyone and their pal has a dog now.

My local pub is actually banning kids after a certain time. But dogs are welcome any time. Winner.

Hotcrossed · 09/04/2023 09:20

children have always been banned after a certain time in pubs

It's definitely lockdown! Same with cats

Something needs to be done about all these dogs.

Yeah, the back yard breeders and the dickheads that want to "get a few litters" out of their pet !!!!

I specifically mention that getting hurt by dogs is the exception .

You have no idea what you're talking about. Just because your child isn't scared of them, doesn't mean all are the same. I like dogs, my husband likes dogs. My neurotypical son was petrified of them. He'd never been bitten or anything but he was terrified. I couldn't go to parks with him as the owners didn't care. He's grown out of it but he still isn't overly keen. Just the way he is. My daughter on the other hand loves them.

We went to New Brighton yesterday, there was a literal sea of French Bulldogs. An awful lot of dog owners who were at Royden Park seem unable to read going by the 'Keep your dogs on a lead' signs.

French bulldogs seem to be the fashionable breed of the moment.

I see far more people dragging bored kids round the shops than I ever see dogs. There are far too many selfish dog owners not picking up poo or leaving the plastic bags lying around - but I see far more trash left by inconsiderate humans: beer cans, plastic drink bottles, burger cartons, sweet wrappers. I see far more kids having meltdowns than dogs running amok. Out walking on shared paths I get more problemsfrom cyclists approaching silently from behind and not ringing their bell (many not even having a bell) than from dogs misbehaving. There are human tossers everywhere - and some of them happen to own dogs.

Can't leave a young child home alone. Can leave a dog. Hope that helps.

I have literally never met any pet owner who thinks the needs of their pet trumps that of a human. I think that is a MN trope trotted out by dog haters.

On (yet) another dog thread, there was someone actually complaining that a dog friendly cafe would offer a small dog biscuit to canine customers, and that their own children did not get a freebie too.

I remember that post, and if memory serves, they weren't moaning, merely pointing out how dog-centric the UK has become.
If you can't see how that is putting dogs before humans, there's no helping you. But you don't see it, because you're obsessed to unhealthy levels with all things dog.

TropicalTheIslandBreeze · 09/04/2023 11:26

Maybe there wouldn't be so many anti dog posts if there weren't so many dogs, and so much entitlement from dog owners.

Florenz · 09/04/2023 11:30

Dogs should be banned from all public parks except for specially designated dog parks.

I'd hate that and I don't have a dog, nor will I ever get one.

Did you actually get him help ? Because there is help for phobias .

Why is recognising that dogs with sharp teeth who bound up at us as a properly scary thing considered a phobia. Surely it's the rest of you who need counselling to undo the conditioning that has made you believe dogs are mans best friend, when in fact they are a filthy menace.

Midsummernightmare · 09/04/2023 11:57

Love dogs, more than happy to meet a friendly dog but can’t stand shitty owners!! I’ve never had a dog myself due to not being able to put in the time, commitment and money to do it properly so it really pisses me off when I have to deal with other peoples badly behaved dogs and shit all over the place because they’re too lazy or ignorant to put in the work. Just like badly behaved children, it’s not cute or sassy, it’s fucking rude!!

Mumwomansisterdaughter · 09/04/2023 11:59

This is just a post from a small amount of strange people who hate pets . Maybe you should realise that you are the problem and not the dogs or the cats .
personally I would not even entertain having someone in my life neither as a partner or a friend that doesn’t love animals . It’s a sign that something is truly amiss from their personality .

Ah goody! Another knock dogs and their owners thread.

Well maybe if there were more responsible dog owners out there who actually control their dogs instead of letting jumping up at ppl and shit all over the place the rest of us wouldn’t feel the need!

I bet you're not vegan. I bet you feed other animals to your pets and think nothing of it.

Teatime55 · 09/04/2023 12:08

I hate that some people think that you should accept their dogs into your house.
nope. DD is scared of them and we have 2 cats. Take them somewhere else to stay.
I say this as someone who grew up with dogs but they were a family pet and not out everywhere you went.

I have a friend who thinks you should get maternity leave for pets if you don’t have children. Which is batshit.

Mumwomansisterdaughter · 08/04/2023 20:10

I will probably upset some but ,I’m one of those who finds it weird when kids are scared of dogs , I think most will come from the parents .
I grew up without dogs and was even bitten by a stray dog when I was 9 but I was never hysterical as some of the children I see these days , it’s not normal to be that scared of anything , specially a dog .
We now have a small dog who adores everyone including kids and other dogs and I love it we can take her anywhere . I remember thinking the same as some of you here and questioning why people would just take their pets everywhere but completly understand now as they are just an extension to our family and we all miss her so much if she is not with us .

The reason my middle daughter was scared of dogs is because of ignorant owners who let their animals come running up out of control to stick their gaping jaws into a terrified toddlers face, which when in a pushchair or right at their level! Do you think my child was comforted by the sight of the owner running across and shouting ‘it’s ok, he won’t hurt you’ when said animal is barking, jumping up, putting their paws on her legs and scratching all down them, all within the few seconds before I managed to get round and grab the dogs collar to pull it away from her? No she was actually terrified and who can blame her. And this was in a park where dogs are supposed to be kept on leads. Once again, ignorant owners with no responsibility. You’re the weirdo if you think that’s down to parents somehow ‘instigating’ the fear.

Floofydawg · 09/04/2023 12:17

Well at least if a kid is scared of a dog it won't come up and poke it's snotty fingers in the dog's eyes without asking permission. Small mercies I guess.

User639762456 · 09/04/2023 12:44

At least you can still go to some National Trust places and they are dog free

Killing them, dumping them. Evil fuckers. There are some people on MN that hate dogs and probably are glad of that. They're evil fuckers too.
