So what jobs are AI proof then?

StrongJamie · 07/04/2023 15:35

Based on recent media report we are facing an imminent (?) AI revolution.

I imagine that doctors, teachers, lecturers, accountants and civil servants can easily be replaced by AI and tailored professional AI software. I am guessing that jobs that require intricate physical handling are less at risk as it would be expense to mass produce the Hardware. Hospital doctors are more at risk than ward nurses but less than GPs who soon will be obsolete.

It will be a good while until they can mass produce robots that do humans jobs, which require a lot of running around and haptic skill but some jobs don't need a person, they just need the right software (e.g. GPs).

I imagine it like this, you log onto your GP AI service, they know all your medical history and also all the up to date epidemiological data of your neighbourhood as well as your biomarkers, pulse, heart rate etc uploaded via your smart watch continuously. The system knows about all possible diseases and conditions and based on your biomarkers and symptoms knows how to signpost you for further tests or what to prescribe. Job done, no more GP.

Teachers? No need. Ai robots, virtual or physical deliver synchronous teaching the rest is done online.

Please pick holes in my assumptions or add to the list of soon to be obsolete professions.

Which ones are ai bullet proof?

Which media report? Because anyone thinking that AI is at a stage to replace most human roles doesn't understand AI as it currently exists. Most AI in current science is actually relatively dumb. That said - I might take it back since an awful lot of humans are too. But what we might "dream" of AI becoming is not possible with current science, so it's no different than asking if transporter technology or interstellar space ships will replace cars - theoretically possible but not on the cards.

tiredhadenough · 07/04/2023 15:40

I think lockdown showed that AI wouldn't work for teachers!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/04/2023 15:43

I can't see AI taking over anything other than very basic finance jobs. And knowing all your health markers isn't the same as a GP looking at you and listening to you or being there when you turn around at the surgery door and say 'Actually, there is one more thing....'

I'm a writer and already lost a lot of work to AI- some companies are trying ChatGTP for basic copy and then just getting someone to give it an edit as an alternative to using real human copywriters. Of course many aren't, but it's very scary. It's been a terrible start to the year, I'm normally inundated with work and I've been struggling to make a decent living recently.

Thank goodness I also write romance and I don't think AI is going to be able to replace me in that area for a while 😆

Botw1 · 07/04/2023 15:48

I dint think we're at risk of AI taking over gps imminently

I'd say nursing is def AI proof along with most care work.

Although maybe that would solve the current care crisis?

Crazykatie · 07/04/2023 15:50

Sorting out the mess that AI makes, humans do the input, when rubbish is input rubbish is output AI will reduce the work but don’t worry life will become more complex to compensate

Hubblebubble · 07/04/2023 15:53

@LotsofVikings Same. Luckily the publisher I write for have actually banned the use of chat GPT, but it's really worrying that lots of others have really embraced it at the expense of real humans. I do worry about the loss of human creativity, when words and art can be magicked up by an AI, so we all forget how.

xLuz · 07/04/2023 15:53

Civil Servants? Wonder if they'll do some voluntary incentivised scheme of early retirement. Pay me to let a robot do my job.

TheyIndeed · 07/04/2023 15:54

ChatGPT has rocked me to be honest, I had no idea it was getting so good so fast, and it will get much better soon.

I do think we'll be seeing shockwaves through professional and creative industries but it's hard to imagine how and when it will happen for sure.

Knullrufs · 07/04/2023 15:55

The three Cs — coaching, creativity, and care.

(By coaching I don’t mean the dreadful MLM ‘life coach’ type coaching. I mean it in its broadest sense — any instructional or tuition-based role is very difficult for AI to effectively replicate, and will continue to be so for a good while.)

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 07/04/2023 15:59

I imagine tradesmen will be safe

AI can’t rewire a house or plumb in a loo

OneCup · 07/04/2023 16:00

I can see some gps being replaced, not necessarily by AI but by technology. Some appointments could be carried out via a flowchart. Any tricky case referred to a real doctor. To be honest, it should already be the case to avoid wasting everyone's time.
I am absolutely convinced chatgpt would do a better job at designing lesson plans than some teachers too, although you still need the actual delivery to take place so you'd want some humans involved.

All go appointments in our area are initially conducted via phone now anyway. A go doesn’t look at you down a phone line. AI can write some excellent code also, (I’m currently taking a CS degree and ChatGTP can write code as well as me from the examples I’ve seen🙈😭)

I work in the creative industries (some of the time). ChatGPT and the like are snaffling the basic end of the market. ‘Leaflet/email written for £50’ type writing. But they’re still hopeless at the properly creative stuff.

It’ll come for the proofreaders and copy editors long before it goes for the creatives, in my view.

That world is always changing though. If you ever worked in marketing/advertising agencies before the late 90s you’ll remember most places employed visualisers; skilled artists who would hand-draw scamps and mock-ups for client presentations. The iMac killed them off; I haven’t seen a human visualiser in an agency for 15 years now.

Knullrufs · 07/04/2023 16:02

AI GP already exists — look at Ada. It’s really good, too.

yossell · 07/04/2023 16:04

I think a lot of coders are worried.

MaireadMcSweeney · 07/04/2023 16:05

Social work. DP keeps trying to find ways that it's going to replace me but it's really not 😆 however it could absolutely be used to generate hypotheses and analysis of information and risk. Not yet, but soon. Thankfully social work is always the last to adopt any new tech so we won't see this for about 20 years 😆
DP does software engineering and whilst you need to read the code and know what you're looking at it is already speeding up his work incredibly.

MissEira · 07/04/2023 16:08

AI programmers should be safe 😜

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 07/04/2023 16:08

Hairdressers will be safe. And plumbers, builders, beauty therapists, electricians, postmen, childminders… trades basically. Or any job that is not done via a computer, so teachers and doctors are probably very safe still.
office jobs though? Bye bye

stargirl1701 · 07/04/2023 16:10

Teaching primary school. I think we completed a global experiment and found that children need to be in schools with real teachers.

tbtf · 07/04/2023 16:10

Counselling? Human listening. So someone to talk to when your whole day is just dealing with robots, and dealing with the constant pressure to automate.

It terrifies me. Now I know how the Luddite's were feeling

Otoh, people who write scientific software are excited... so many possibilities!

Midwifery, childcare, undertakers, panda huggers

TheyIndeed · 07/04/2023 16:11

I mean, if it really knocks all the "office" professions back then it'll knock everyone, because presumably it'll cause widespread unemployment.

TheyIndeed · 07/04/2023 16:12

I've seen people use it already for counselling and say it's effective, even in its current primitive form.
