White or magnolia?

Every wall in my house is marked and stained with the grime of daily life and it is getting me down. I have decided to paint all through the house. I wanted to do sage green in the tiny hallway. DP said absolutely not, as it won't match - we need a theme throughout (I bloody love sage green so while I'm fine with sage green throughout, he is not.)

Kitchen is white. All other rooms are magnolia.

I think white looks wonderful and clean but also a bit boring or clinical. Magnolia has warmth but also boring.

So would you paint your entire house (excluding kitchen which is staying white) magnolia or white? Living room has beige sofa and dark wood floor through out.

Exciting topic, I know. Thank you!

I would paint everything white and warm it up with soft furnishings and art etc! I think white looks cleaner and brighter, magnolia often looks far too yellow to me.

My house is entirely white (currently working through adding wild wild neutral tones, although I want sage green for my utility 😂), so I might be biased.

This didn't take off quite as well as I expected! It's clearly less exciting than I imagined.

Thank you @dietcokelime that's exactly the inspiration I need. I believe the wildest colour we have right now is beige. 😬

White is so much better.

I'd do white

ConfusedK · 05/04/2023 13:17

White

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 05/04/2023 13:18

Our whole house is painted in Crown Ivory Cream.
It's warmer than Magnolia and because all the rooms are the same it's easy to retouch an area if it gets grubby.

Rachaelrachael · 05/04/2023 13:19

There's so many other neutral shades other than white and magnolia! Why not pick 2 or 3 complimentary shades rather than doing it all the same? Eg, farrow and ball strong white, skimming stone and elephants breath. Lovely neutral shades and not a hint of magnolia!

JennyTheDonkey · 05/04/2023 13:19

Scrubbable white.

Never magnolia

BertieBotts · 05/04/2023 13:19

You can have coordination without all the walls being the same colour. Personally since you already have magnolia and white, I'd go for the green.

This is a good guide about how to match throughout the house without having all the same:

Do you mean “pure brilliant white” white or open to other whites? Dulux Timeless is a nice white-ish colour without the harshness of brilliant white.

No to magnolia.

TakeMyStrongHand · 05/04/2023 19:42

I was just thinking a cheap (but scrubbable) so simply brilliant white or magnolia rather than something as fancy as elephant breath Blush

Looks like magnolia is a definite no, shocking!

White I think. Magnolia maybe 15 years ago but it may start to look a little dated now.

Spendonsend · 05/04/2023 20:04

My last house was white everywhere. It was so easy to cut in when painting, and quick to retouch as it didnt seem to fade like colours do so i could just paint the dirty bit. It washed fine too.

Current house is a colour similar to magnolia. Its cleans fine but doesnt touch up as well. Its softer/easier to live with than white. I think it's coming back in to fashion.

That probably doesnt help.

BarbedButterfly · 05/04/2023 20:05

I am a colour person but definitely not magnolia. I think it looks very dated now.

doctorboo · 05/04/2023 20:08

We moved into our current rental in 2021 and I planned on painting the lounge in an ‘interesting white’ asap.
I got loads of different white testers popped them on the wall and fell in love with Dulux Polar White - it holds up as the sun moves round and looks good in lamp light too.
I’ve been looking at them for almost two years (Haven’t actually got round to painting due to lack of £££) and still think Polar White is fab.

Now I’m thinking of doing it this summer hols, DH has changed his mind and actually wants us to use washable/durable brilliant white in every room because it’s cheapest.

The only room we’ve actually painted is my eldest son’s room and I used johnson brilliant white bathroom paint with an extra dose of anti mould stuff because the external wall is very cold. It’s a very small room and it’s better for the ‘glossy’ look.

alexdgr8 · 05/04/2023 21:17

not white.
i think it looks dated now.
looks like a laboratory.
not warm, not homely.
not sage green either, too strong, makes place look smaller.
some kind of v light shade, or off-white.
magnolia is classic.

cherrypied · 05/04/2023 21:18

Magnolia is really dated. Kind of orangey peachy

I did a few rooms in farrow and ball shades but the remaining in dulux timeless on the walls and white woodwork. I really like it clean and simple

The best was the kitchen which we had done in eggshell and it's is bomb proof I'd have the hall done in eggshell next time.

Kdubs1981 · 06/04/2023 09:30

Dulux is. Great alternative to white. Warm white without being yellow. In darker rooms white can look quite bleak and grey.

Also, why on earth would you need a theme?! It's not a hotel. I think sage green hall way and everything else timeless would look gorgeous

Kdubs1981 · 06/04/2023 09:39

Dulux timeless!!! Sorry

SarahAndQuack · 06/04/2023 09:42

I'm allergic to magnolia - I've lived in too many rented places where it was the default colour, and to me it will always look dreary and dated.

White is ok, but I think living in an all-white house is also a bit of an old-fashioned choice. About five years ago you couldn't turn a page in interiors magazines without seeing all-white houses, and I think they were overdone.

I'd say do sage green, because you love it (so long as your husband isn't actually trying delicately to tell you he hates it!). It's a hallway; you don't spend long in there, so you won't get bored of a strong colour, and contrary to popular belief, deep colours don't generally make rooms look smaller.

There's a nice book called Mad About the House by Kate Watson-Smythe (she has a website where a lot of the same advice is free, too). She gives examples of the 'red thread' of repeated colours you can use to make a house feel 'put together'. But her point is that you don't have to paint everything the same colour - you could just have hints of repeated colours that link up, like a sage green throw on the sofa or a whatever.

weddingdaydancet · 06/04/2023 09:44

Not magnolia.

there are many whites. Brilliant white has blue undertones. I’d compromise and go for something like farrow and balls Wimborne white. It has yellow under tones rather than blue

Spendonsend · 06/04/2023 09:50

See to me wimborne white looks like magnolia with a nice name

Christmascracker0 · 06/04/2023 09:50

Dulux timeless. White is too stark and magnolia is yellow and dated.

mewkins · 06/04/2023 09:56

I have Dulux white mist (durable) and it looks crisp. It is a cooler white. Jasmine white I think is warmer.

Re farrow and ball - yes some lovely colours (I had off white for years before repainting). But it isn't scrubbable and it is now a ridiculous price. I'd use it for a smaller area but not for a larger one. Other brands have mastered the flat paint effect and do a more durable version in my opinion.

DinosApple · 06/04/2023 10:37

We have Egyptian cotton walls in nearly every room. It's a neutral colour without being too stark. It works well with lots of colours.

I'm a big fan of colour, and DH loves magnolia, so our last house was a mix as there were lots of separate rooms. In this house one colour flows better due to the layout.

Whatever you do it's worth getting paint you can wipe clean if you can stretch to it.
