Do you do long distance walking? Coast to coast etc...

I do. Dh got me into it and I love it. Well, except when I don't. Then I swear I'll never do another one. Feet are screaming. Legs feel like they won't walk another few yards.

But the scenery is amazing. I've only ever done them in England. I'd like to do the West Highland Way one day. I've met lots of lovely interesting people.

Anyone else do LDWs? Which ones have you done and where next?

Do you go on your own? I really want to do more walking.

beastlyslumber · 03/04/2023 22:52

Not yet, but it's on my list! I would go on my own though and honestly I'm nervous about a lot of things- getting lost, getting bitten, running out of food...

No as dh is the instigator usually. Although lately I do tend to say let's do another one. I organise where we stay etc.

You definitely should go for it. I'd have no qualms about doing it alone. Where do you live? (Area)

Which walk? The Dales way is a lovely one. Not too difficult. The Cleveland way is very well sign posted. There's Facebook groups dedicated to each walk. Dales way, Cleveland way chat UK, coast to coast. Etc.... They're busy with very helpful people.

I've done some modest easy ones. The Dale's Way was good and a circular one in the Lakes over 3 days that I forget the name of.

I want to do the South Downs Way, on my own at May half term. I need to pluck up the courage and get it booked before it's too late. Booking anything on your own is so expensive though. It would hardly cost any more to take someone with me.

PoorMrsNorris · 03/04/2023 22:56

I'd love to do the Wales Coastal Path. I'm incredibly lazy and unfit, but I've lost lots of weight and am thinking it might be easier now... such amazing scenery that you can only see from walking. Lovely hidden gems.

I've done the Dales way twice. It's a lovely walk.

It's very unfair how expensive it is for solo walkers. Are there any hostels/bunk barns on that walk?

How far is it? Have you done many long day walks?

Placemarking. I want to do the Wild Atlantic Way

Fordian · 03/04/2023 23:25

Can I chip in and say- a lot of long-distance walking in England, even Britain, is boring!! I mean, South Downs. Up, down; up, down - hour after hour. And repeat. Possibly meditative. But not that interesting.

I did the WHW last year with my 10 year old. I want to hike the Great Glen Way this year.

PacificallyRequested · 03/04/2023 23:38

I don't do this but I would love to. I would also be going solo probably. I am planning to tackle the Fife Coastal Path in easy chunks as day walks, as a starting point to see how I get on. Then one day I would love to do the Moray Coast Path or maybe even the West Highland Way.

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn is a great book about a couple doing the South West Coast Path.

That sounds like a sensible plan. Yes I've read both of Raynor's books. I could really visualise their struggles.

Long distance walking is amazing! I love to walk from church to church in the countryside! Like a pilgrimage.

That’s just a car/cycle route on roads, though. Not a long distance walk. Land access is very different in Ireland for obvious historical reasons. (I wish there were a walk down the western seaboard, though!)

I’ve done some small ones (Cotswolds Way, the Ridgeway) and parts of the Southwest coastal path and the Pennine Way.

strawberrybarn · 03/04/2023 23:46

I'd recommend the John Muir Way and the Berwickshire Coastal Path!

Enjoy!

Still sounds more interesting than you…!
Why bother even posting.

To the OP, I’d love to do it if I could get the wife on board!
Some of the routes look amazing, particularly those in Scotland.
How many miles a day do you cover?

mdinbc · 03/04/2023 23:57

I'm a bit envious. I just googled "Dales Way', and although the distances seem to be a lot for each day, the idea of walking on paths from one town to another sounds ideal. We don't have the ability to do that where I live (in BC Canada).
I wondered if you camped along the way, but it seems you can stay in decent hotels along the way.

If I wanted to walk to the next town, it is 143km, you would have to walk along a highway, with no facilities in between other than out-houses,! Not anything like a nice hike.

I hope she does. Maybe try a short one to start with?
Most I've done is about 22. I prefer 12 to 15. But all depends on hills etc. Some of the most difficult wet days have been my favourites. Living in the north east coast must have made me hardy? mad

No the Dales way is easy. I've done it twice over 6 days. It's only about 82 miles.
