Do you do long distance walking? Coast to coast etc...

I do. Dh got me into it and I love it. Well, except when I don't. Then I swear I'll never do another one. Feet are screaming. Legs feel like they won't walk another few yards.

But the scenery is amazing. I've only ever done them in England. I'd like to do the West Highland Way one day. I've met lots of lovely interesting people.

Anyone else do LDWs? Which ones have you done and where next?

You should watch George Ezra, end to end on amazon prime!

MercianQueen · 04/04/2023 00:13

Yes, did C2C a few years ago and planning to do it again. The very best adventure I've had 😍

Cornwallinthesun · 04/04/2023 00:16

We have walked the SW coast paths of Cornwall, Devon and mostly Somerset

I usually bribe myself along the way with food and beer. Works for us 😊

I've been to parts of Cornwall and seen views NONE of my Cornish friends have. Which is a bit odd. I just love the magic and "other worldly" feeling of being out there.

Yes me but not much any this year---- and you've reminded me to get something planned.

Did the South Downs Way last year - the YHA is fab and right on the doorstep would definitely recommend. We did 2 days with one day rolling countryside, LOTS of hills, villages & various pub stops and the 2nd along the coast (stunning views but definitely preferred day 1) .

Would love to do Hadrian's Wall path and something around the Jurassic coast.

I have watched it. He seems like a nice lad. I enjoy watching YouTube videos of people's hikes. Just watched a Cleveland way one. Haze outdoors is entertaining. Especially his C2C one.

Dh and I watched some blokes from the US who were doing the WHW. They didn't finish it because of the weather! We felt cheated 😪

Love haze outdoors, Liam Brown, too!

I love to walk from church to church in the countryside! Like a pilgrimage.

I read a book where someone walked between Salisbury and Winchester catherdrals. I’d like to see both and have never been anywhere near so I thought that would be a lovely thing to do. I have done precisely nothing about it.

I’d like to walk along hadrians wall and the Pennine way and the WHW. Hopefully one day.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/04/2023 00:54

I’ve done bits of them on various U.K. holidays. But I’m talking just maybe 3 days of walking, spread out over a week. I love coastal scenery and air so SW coastal path is my face type.

i just don’t know whether I could give all my precious holiday time to day after day of the same activity as much as I enjoy it. I know the scenery changes in most places so you have variety there but it’s still essential the same activity. I prefer to vary my days on a week’s holiday somewhere so wouldn’t really want the time to devote to it.

if I was retired and had all the time in the world then yeah, I’d do more long distance walks.

Tighginn · 04/04/2023 00:59

The kintyre way is worth looking into, walkhighlands is a great site for any Scottish routes.

mackthepony · 04/04/2023 01:13

Not sure if it's allowed as it's American 😉 but the Appalachian trail is one I would love to do.

Because of Bill Bryson's book of course

It’s the Clarendon Way. The local children’s hospice organises a charity walk for it every year - either the full of half the length.so if you want to do it the organisation can be done for you.

similarly the local rotary clubs organise Walk the Test and Walk the Itchen Way - day long charity walks with transport laid on to various start points.

Wales Coastal Path link to different charts to show distances:

walescoastpathcdn-01.azureedge.net/media/1186/wcp-kilometres-english-13-july-15.pdf?rnd=132064929530000000

But no I haven't done any long walk as all. It's something I'd like to get into though.

Lots more info on this website.

PurBal · 04/04/2023 06:36

Not since we had children. They’re too little to do 15-20 miles a day for a weekend or whatever. They are still small enough to carry but then we can’t carry our camping gear. The most we can do is about 6 miles, we should do more.

PurBal · 04/04/2023 06:36

Basically I’m just jealous reading this thread.

Theskyoutsideisblue · 04/04/2023 06:43

Am doing South Downs way at the moment. Done Thames path, offas dyke, wye valley path, mendip way, Coleridge way and Cotswold way

Royalsingingseal · 04/04/2023 06:44

Northumberland coastal path is beautiful and an relatively easy, great bus service if you want to base yourself at one place for a chunk of it and just travel to your start every day. We had some fabulous weather recently

Plantmoretrees86 · 04/04/2023 06:58

I've done the West Highland way. It was fantastic, tough (midway through I wasn't sure I'd finish!) but so rewarding with the scenery and really sociable along the way. Would definitely recommend, just avoid midge season!! It gave us the walking bug and I looked up long distance walking in Italy and Iceland afterwards but, alas, then covid hit and now we have a baby so those plans are on the back burner...

When you say tough, I bet you mean that Loch Lomand section don't you? Grin It near about killed me that day! But so beautiful and one of the best things I've ever done. I was so proud of myself - I did it solo and felt really brave.

You can do The Pilgrims Way. An actual pilgrimage from Winchester to Canterbury that's been walked for 1000 years

ladyandthechocolate · 04/04/2023 08:26

I’ve just come back from doing the Camino de Portugues. You end in Santiago de Compostela in Spain and stay somewhere different each night. Loads of great hostels although, food is incredibly good value so I don’t think the whole trip cost more than a UK based trip. Cafe con lèche while sat outside in a remote Spanish village and eating fresh tomatoes and olive oil on toast….heaven!

YogaLite · 04/04/2023 08:58

Done a lot on south coast, Thames Path and almost finished North & South Downs ways and 4 days left on The Ridgway..

Half way through SWCP, will continue in May. Would like to do Somerset coast path east of Minehead.

Hope to do coastal Isle of Wight and I have Wales Coast Path on my radar, looking for a willing party.

WarningToTheCurious · 04/04/2023 09:13

I’ve now done much of the South Downs Way, but in sections rather than as a single trip. Like the sound of the Clarendon Way.

@ladyandthechocolate DH has also done the Camino Portugues - he’s done it in two halves (Porto to Valença and then Valença to Santiago) and is off to do the second half again soon. We both plan to do the Santiago - Muxia - Fisterra one (I have my eye on a particularly nice parador on that route).

QuintanaRoo · 04/04/2023 09:23

I’ve done the Cleveland way and dales way. Had planned the coast to coast prior to covid but broke my leg badly and it’s never healed properly so game over for me sadly as I’d also planned to do the PCT in America in 2020 (actually had my permit) but maybe it’s good that my leg stopped that as it would have been a scary year.

dh did the sw coast path in 21 days and wild camped the whole way. He is insane though.

YogaLite · 04/04/2023 09:26

@QuintanaRoo, having done half of it I can say your DH must be super super fit!

To be honest he'd consider that slow now. He did a 240 mile ultra marathon over massive mountains in 6 days last year! But yes, very fit
