Easter gifts for kids

A contentious topic…

When I was young, it was chocolate eggs for me but I had friends who routinely got trainers, clothes, money etc.

What do you get your kids? If it’s eggs only, how many do you tend to get them?

I’ve no idea where the money/clothes notion came from, but it seems quite popular that kids get an Easter breakfast, a balloon display and presents.

An Easter egg hunt in the garden and some eggs from family. Plenty.

DelurkingAJ · 03/04/2023 20:51

My DM often bought us clothing because that had been the tradition in the 50s when she was growing up (a new outfit for church on Easter Sunday). DS1 doesn’t eat sweets or chocolate so gets a small other present. DS2 an Easter egg and maybe a Lindt Bunny.

mynameiscalypso · 03/04/2023 20:52

My DS doesn't really like chocolate so I've bought him a little playmobil bunny set. I mean, I've also bought him an egg but I'm clearly going to eat that myself.

Ha! My son isn’t a big chocolate fan either (doesn’t get it from me), so he’s got a Cocomelon toy, a cuddly bunny and a small egg that I’ll ensure doesn’t go to waste. 😆

Mine get huge amounts of chocolate from other people.

We’ve got them a new cd for the car (Matilda the musical and Encanto) a book each and a geomag set I found for £5 each.

Plus an outfit, as an ‘Easter dress’ is tradition.

Number24Bus · 03/04/2023 20:55

Just Easter eggs here.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 03/04/2023 20:57

Two eggs for my eldest.

An egg and a teddy for my youngest.

I'll also do a small Easter Egg hunt but we are going away on Easter Sunday so it'll only be a quick one!

Raggeo · 03/04/2023 21:00

My parents used to always give my siblings and I a gift, as we always got lots of eggs from other people.
My kids are still young and don't get a lot of chocolate generally so I've bought them new toys for their sandpit and a small egg each. We will do an egg hunt with plastic eggs then the chocolate egg will be given at the end.

Mueslikid · 03/04/2023 21:00

One fairly large egg each, and a bowlful of mini eggs to share with the whole family.
I have sometimes bought them a book, or clothes too, but not every year.

ButterCrackers · 03/04/2023 21:03

A creme egg or a packet of mini eggs but the kids don't expect anything. All the big fuss and gifts is unnecessary at Easter.

Ichosetheredpill · 03/04/2023 21:06

We do an Easter egg hunt, an Easter egg from the Easter bunny, make and decorate an Easter cake, a piece of Lego and lots of Easter crafts, all spread through the holidays, mainly to occupy them and preserve my sanity.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/04/2023 21:08

We had new clothes for Easter growing up. Not necessarily a dress usually pyjamas and swimming costumes or something. Stuff that we needed rather than wanted IYSWIM.

New dress at Easter has been traditional since the victorians I think.

stargirl1701 · 03/04/2023 21:10

I got chocolate eggs as a child - far too many! My parents were both from large families and the aunts/uncles got all the children an egg.

My children still have a choc egg from grandparents and godparents but we also buy books as Easter gifts. I buy my children books at every opportunity!

caringcarer · 03/04/2023 21:11

I've always just let my children choose an Easter egg each but they got several other eggs from Nan and Aunties. I give my dgc money £10 each, as my dd will only let them have 1 egg each. She will let them choose a little gift each.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 03/04/2023 21:23

We get them one big egg and a little basket with smaller things in it plus a new outfit.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 03/04/2023 21:25

Chocolate eggs.

I'll buy a large, medium and small egg each for them.

My mum will buy them an egg and sometimes my Dad too.

ZebraKid71 · 03/04/2023 21:26

An egg each from us plus some little chocolate rabbits and chick's from lidl, loads of eggs from family and friends - we hide them all round the garden. We also get them either a magazine or an activity or sticker book of some kind and my mum gets them an outfit each (not an easter outfit, just some new clothes).

Sugarfree23 · 03/04/2023 21:31

I buy them a toy although this year its computer games.
I started it with garden or outdoor toys both have winter birthdays and Easter seemed a more appropriate time to buy outdoor stuff.

I think it's do what suits you.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 03/04/2023 21:36

We're Jewish, but when I was growing up there was a family who were not Jewish but quite strict Christians. They celebrated all the stories of easter but never got eggs because their parents said they were pagan. They got new clothes I have no idea how usual they were. Their parents were quite friendly with ours, because my dad said they were more Torah observant than we were, even though they believed in Jesus! Grin I was always very jealous new clothes and no Matza porridge! weeps at the coming of 5th April

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 03/04/2023 21:37

No idea why most of that is crossed out! HmmHmm

MikeLitoriss · 03/04/2023 21:37

Ds is 5 and has lots of chocolate eggs given by extended family, so instead of buying more chocolate for the sake of it were doing an egg hunt (plastic eggs) and i got him a big bag of lego from the charity shop, a superhero sticker book from the workz and a book I got second hand on Amazon that I know he will be obsessed with and that we would have given him anyway (Lego Star wars encyclopedia)

JennyForeigner · 03/04/2023 21:38

We always got a book as a kid, and I loved it. Continuing that tradition with a small buttons egg on the side, and turning a blind eye to whatever chocolate candy behemoth is delivered by grandma.

mondaytosunday · 03/04/2023 21:41

Yes my neighbours growing up got a basket and proper gifts - clothing etc. We got chocolate eggs and did a hunt. I probably was a bit jealous, but we lived in a predominantly Jewish area so Easter wasn't a huge deal for most of the kids anyway. I think as it's not the norm I just thought they were lucky, not that we were deprived.

gogohmm · 03/04/2023 21:42

One small Easter egg now, when they were small I often bought them a new dress each

Meandfour · 03/04/2023 21:44

Mine get a new outfit each, a couple of eggs and a bag of sweets each.
We’ve got a massive family so they get a lot of eggs & presents from other family. My DHs parents usually get them a gift bag with little gifts instead of chocolate and my parents buy them a little Lego set.
