Easter gifts for kids

A contentious topic…

When I was young, it was chocolate eggs for me but I had friends who routinely got trainers, clothes, money etc.

What do you get your kids? If it’s eggs only, how many do you tend to get them?

I’ve no idea where the money/clothes notion came from, but it seems quite popular that kids get an Easter breakfast, a balloon display and presents.

My adult dc get miniature bottles of alcohol in an easter hunt, my younger ones get small eggs and a cuddly toy at the end of the hunt, one of my dds can't eat sweet things at all so I have bought her cheese for the hunt with a giant babybel for the end of it 🤣

SwirlyShirly · 03/04/2023 21:46

Oh god is this a thing now?! Are Easter eggs not enough?! 😣

We do a small gift as DD was showered with chocolate some years when she was small.

I grew up hunting for chocolate on Easter Sunday, all small eggs, bunnies etc. In Germany the big eggs were for adults, not children.

So we do small chocolates and a gift, we did mini fun shower gels, barbie clothes, a book, small travel game, nothing more than £10-15.

One big egg, 2 medium, 1 small and a packet of mini eggs. No presents or clothes.

An egg here and the last few years an Easter egg hunt in the garden with friends, which I’ve always felt is very indulgent of me.

I don’t really understand the gift thing but then I’m not Christian. How is an encanto CD and some toy magnets which PP bought to do with Easter? Just the fact that you give it to them on Easter Day, like Christmas?

You do realise you don’t have to do it. 🙄

My kids get eggs and other chocolate. And a gift/cash.

We're not religious so don't celebrate Easter. When the kids were < 5 they used to get an Easter egg from MIL (who is) but noone else in the family would (it's a bit of effort to buy and post Easter eggs surely). There was usually an Easter bonnet thing at school....

New clothes for Church on Easter Sunday is where the tradition of clothing for Easter comes from.

We used to get small gifts as kids or stuff for summer, we always had a new Video to watch as a family as well. I never liked Easter egg chocolate so I used to get a CD instead.

I did the same when mine were young and bought garden toys or things like art supplies as my DS had a Boxing Day birthday.

Now they are older it’s just sweets and eggs, and an Easter breakfast with crumpets, hot cross buns etc.

They have one main egg from us, plus a few smaller easter themed sweets and chocolates. Then an Easter basket on Easter Sunday with large chocolate bunny and some carrot jelly beans usually.

When our boys were young we gave them an Easter egg, we did an egg hunt and they got some kind of outdoor toy in preparation for, hopefully, better weather.

AnneButNotHathaway · 04/04/2023 06:37

Just easter eggs mostly. Coloring books, crayons, bunny plushies are options that are already old in our house 😂Egg hunt is a must though, and I make an Easter slideshow with hints and interesting facts, so it's mostly about entertainment rather than gifts now

Makesense12 · 04/04/2023 08:36

Mine are older but used to get books, game and maybe a dressing up out fit?

Makesense12 · 04/04/2023 08:37

@Rainsdropskeepfalling

Only a few people I know who are religious speficically celebrate.

Mostly people celebrate naturally the old pagan welcoming of spring

ExtremelyDetermined · 04/04/2023 08:41

Just an Easter egg from us, if we are seeing grandparents maybe one from them too, nothing else though. We used to do hunts with cousins when they were little but they think it's babyish now (teens).

Catnipcapers · 04/04/2023 08:45

MIL goes massively OTT with chocolate and sweet things so we don't buy DS anything like that now. We buy him some lego which he Dan play with over the Easter holidays

MsSquiz · 04/04/2023 08:46

The kids in the family range from 1 to 10, so we do an egg hunt for small fillable plastic eggs and everyone has their own design to look for and they're filled differently (oldest loves oreos so he has mini Oreo eggs, the younger ones have a mix of jellies and chocolate buttons)
The nephews and niece get an Easter egg and £10
My 2 DDs get an egg/chocolate bunny, Easter book (anything chick or bunny related), a cuddly bunny for their first Easter and a new dress to wear on Easter Sunday/Monday when we see family

I always used to get an egg and a whole new outfit from my dm at Easter

Peachi82 · 07/04/2023 22:15

I've got the kids a toy each (FB Marketplace £5ish) and bought the older one a few smaller eggs, the baby gets a yoghurt pouch.
I've got my sister a tomato plant, some treats for her cat and small chocolate eggs.
My other half will get an xbox game that was on offer.

whoruntheworldgirls · 07/04/2023 22:19

Eggs, 1 medium egg, a small character chocolate item from Aldi (this year a mermaid) and a small chocolate figure (this year a chick from m&s) from us.
She also gets an egg from husband parents and an egg from my mum

GingerbreadBaking · 07/04/2023 22:24

I got nothing for Easter.

I bought my children chocolate eggs and organised a simple egg hunt, I still get them eggs as adults, I think they would be disappointed if I didn't.

I understand those who were not well off bought a new hat / bonnet for church if they couldn't afford a new outfit. Hat wearing tended to cease in general once the churches stopped the requirement, I think it began in the 1960's.

I remember women in silk head scarfs upto the 80s, you can see in old footage that chaps wore a hat and pinstripe suit to work in the city.

TheChosenTwo · 07/04/2023 22:35

As a kid I remember getting a new outfit from my mum and a book from grandparents aswell as eggs from them and other family members.
I did small gifts for nieces and nephews as when they were younger one was diabetic from being very very small so chocolate was avoided for all of them.
Always just done eggs for mine though. Actually thinking about it I think I did sticker books and things when they were little but now they’re big they just get chocolate.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 08/04/2023 00:05

Ours usually get an egg each from the Easter bunny, eggs from family members and some kind of outdoor activity from me and DH. Last year it was sidewalk chalk, this year probably a football/hockey set. Previously it has been mini beanbags for throwing games, a hula hoop etc.
