I have literally never heard this.

Is it true? I think not...

Well I keep seeing tiktok videos about how to identify if someone (female) is gay…..the main signs seem to be nose rings, cuffed jeans and flannel shirts. I must look like a walking advert for being a lesbian but I’m straight. 😆

Fuck me, I wear all of the above with DMs and all, I must look gay as the day is long if this is the case

Phoebo · 03/04/2023 00:42

Um, I assume she means for white people given many different cultures have had nose piercings for a long time now Hmm

SwordToFlamethrower · 03/04/2023 00:57

Isn't it a queer coding thing?

BlueHeartMelody · 03/04/2023 01:10

I think on social media and even in recent movies, short hair, an androgynous look with piercings does tend to imply you’re non-binary etc. But nose piercings have been around for a very long time and so has short hair and an androgynous style of clothing but recently I’ve seen it meant that it means something completely different.

It’s like when you have a heart with a rainbow. As a child, it might mean that you like rainbows and now it tends to mean that you love Pride. But what if you just like rainbows? 🤔 But it’s become associated with Pride so the assumption is the rainbow is for that. Similarly the nose piercing, short hair sometimes partially shaven, sometimes even ear piercing and an androgynous style is seen to be anything but heterosexual on social media etc.

But previous generations did have to tomboys but somehow that didn’t mean anything but nowadays it does?

This reminds me of when I was a teen at school in the 80s and it was said that a male with a left ear piercing signified he was gay.

Wasn't it the other way round?

My (hetero) DB had his left ear pierced. As do a few other, older, male relatives
My (gay) DS has his right one done.

I probably should tell my mum she's a lesbian on account of her nose piercing. Grin

CoffeeAndCreativity · 03/04/2023 01:26

I wear a nose ring, I am heterosexual, so is my cousin and two of my friends who also have their noses pierced.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/04/2023 02:04

In DD's school all the yoot appear to identify as LGBTQI+ of some kidney or other. The girls anyway.

There aren't enough nostrils in the world to communicate the nuance.

sashh · 03/04/2023 02:42

Does your friend think lesbians are all vegetarians as well?

MegIsWhite · 03/04/2023 02:53

I've seen it in action many times. Usually with men, they're assumed gay.

A good number of gay people I know and have seen have nose piercings but I still wouldn't assume anyone with a nose piercings is gay.

MegIsWhite · 03/04/2023 02:55

Media doesn't help either. If you're a gay character, you'll have "the look" to signify 'gay' and that usually includes some body piercing like nose rings etc. It's odd I know but it's how these stereotypes are perpetuated.

Rockbird · 03/04/2023 03:01

I'll have to stop cuffing my jeans too then which will be annoying as I'm a shortarse and they'll drag on the floor 🤷🏼‍♀️😀

Thepossibility · 03/04/2023 03:06

Lol even my mum has a nose ring.
They're hardly a statement these days.

Beezknees · 03/04/2023 03:16

Loads of people have nose piercings. Had mine done 16 years ago and I'm straight. Gay male friend does not have any piercings.

This. Your friend is a moron. I think there was something in the 80s about men with an earring. I think we're all a bit past all that now, slightly more worldly and open minded I would think! Hmm

Stravawindow · 03/04/2023 07:30

Never heard of it. Years ago when I was at school - I’m in my 50s now, it used to be wearing an anklet/chain apparently signified sexuality. Can’t remember why though.

User478 · 03/04/2023 07:52

There was a handy rhyme when I was at school. Unfortunately I can't remember if it was
"Right Ear
Right Queer"
Or
"Left Ear
Right Queer"

It was definitely before Queerness was reclaimed.

Other things that definitely proved/turned you were gay:
Accidentally brushing against someone's bum when moving past them (both fully clothed)
Asking to use someone's rubber (eraser)
Hugging/touching anyone for any reason
Putting the collar up on your shirt
Doing the top 2 buttons of your airtex up
Tucking your shirt in.

MyopicBunny · 03/04/2023 09:12

I don't know where she gets it from. It seems judgmental and a tad homophobic. I am thinking that the part of the UK she comes from is a bit judgemental.

Oh yes, at school I also remember the list of things that meant you were gay, including.... purple doc martens 🧐

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/04/2023 09:17

When I was at secondary school - London, 1980s - a left earring was meant to be a signifier of a man being gay. It was "It's a Sin" era, when LGBTQ+ communities were still very much underground.

I don't think I'd think anything of anybody wearing any amount of earring anywhere these days.

Mabelface · 03/04/2023 09:18

I have a mostly shaved head, wear cuffed jeans or dungarees, plus checked shirts and doc martens. I have a nose ring. I've been called a dyke, lesbian, lemon. I'm actually straight.

OOmpityDoomipity · 03/04/2023 12:16

I have both sides of my nose pierced and my septum, I'm straight 😅

My friend reckons having your nipples pierced means your gay too

I also have my nipples pierced and I'm still straight 🤣

x2boys · 03/04/2023 12:28

I used to have my nose .pierced I in the 90,s I think I have a vague recollection that it depended on which side was pierced that indicated your sexuality ?
unless I dreamt it😂

Simonjt · 03/04/2023 12:32

She’ll have a shock if she visits some places in Asia, I have my nose pierced, not because I’m gay, but because of my ethnicity and culture.

WhatWouldKimDealDo · 03/04/2023 12:39

I've seen younger lesbians on social media refer to septum piercings as a sign someone might be gay. My girlfriend has a nose piercing, I know lots of lesbians with nose piercings, and lots without! As a lesbian, I might notice other women who have a certain look and think "probably a fellow lesbian" but doesn't mean I'm right!!! anyway it doesn't really matter, unlikely a lesbian will see another woman with a nose piercing and launch themselves at them...I mean, it's not THAT likely anyway😜

Imtryingnottobother · 03/04/2023 12:45

Reminds me of being a kid when wearing an ankle bracelet made you a woman of loose morals.

In Ireland in the 80s it was if you wore white socks with black shoes😂
