What are your views on swearing in public?

Florelei · 02/04/2023 01:50

I’m currently staying at a hotel abroad and we have noticed a good 50% of people are having loud drunken conversations using lots of swear words including the f word.

I enjoy a bit of swearing but I wouldn’t shout the f word at the top of my voice around the pool and in the bars and restaurants.

I don’t want to sound like a victor meldrew type but I have been a bit shocked at how much swearing is going on. Are we moving towards a society where swearing is normal and acceptable or am I just unlucky?

I know I’m going to get a load of swearing replies but I am genuinely interested in people’s thoughts on this because I feel so out of touch with a good percentage of people at my hotel!

I don't swear but am fine with a little or 'appropriate' swearing (yes that is different for everyone) but I don't see the need to every second word is a swear word and people who cannot say anything without swearing

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/04/2023 01:57

I wouldn't shout anything across a restaurant or bar, personally. Or across a pool on holiday. Unless it was an emergency.

I think the shouting is rude because it's obnoxious to be so loud. I couldn't care less about the use of swear words though. They're just words, and I never understand why people get so precious about them.

LaBellina · 02/04/2023 01:58

The shouting would bother me more then the swearing.

greenspaces4peace · 02/04/2023 02:00

unsocial behavior and simply unpleasant.

Northernsouloldies · 02/04/2023 02:04

I swear but it would very much depend on the setting and who was sitting in earshot, definitely not around children, families etc.

Spirini · 02/04/2023 02:22

I would've said I've a fairly foul mouth yet if someone was just sat next to me effin and cursing I'd think that was too much.

On the other hand if I stubbed my toe or some unexpected thing happened - curse away! Vs random chats f-bombing - not appropriate

MarshaMelrose · 02/04/2023 05:04

I don't like public swearing. I don't need to hear people effing and blinding. I don't want to see people picking their nose or putting their hands down their pants and scratching their balls either. There are some things that are just not necessary to be done in public.

Riapia · 02/04/2023 07:36

Are you staying in an AI hotel?

GettingThereCharleyBear · 02/04/2023 07:39

@Riapia for one moment I thought there was such a thing as an Artificial Intelligence hotel and I was freaked 😂

BlueKaftan · 02/04/2023 07:40

I’m also abroad staying in a hotel and have yet to hear any swearing.

Shemovesshemoves21 · 02/04/2023 07:41

I don't mind some swearing, but shouting it across anywhere for all to hear would irritate me.

RampantIvy · 02/04/2023 07:42

Swearing at bad drivers or if you have stubbed your toe is a natural reaction, and fine.

Shouting and swearing in public for no reason at all is boorish behaviour. What kind of holiday are you on that attracts this kind of holiday maker? AI?

it isn't very relaxing to be surrounded by this.

Abcdefgh1234 · 02/04/2023 07:53

I dont swear at all. I found swearing its tacky and uneducated! I would very much irritated by it.

Knullrufs · 02/04/2023 07:58

I don’t think you can extrapolate anything about ‘society’ — or indeed whether or not you are out of touch — based on a few bevvied-up weapons poolside at the Sandy Crack.

Knullrufs · 02/04/2023 07:59

Loving all the drive-by sneers about all-inclusive, by the way. 🤣 Never change, snobs of Mumsnet.

Changemaname1 · 02/04/2023 08:02

😂😂
Nothing wrong with an all inclusive

and I can swear with the best of them , but not in public like that , not infront of children or people I don’t know . nor would I be shouting my head off either , it’s beyond rude and I wouldn’t relax with people like that around

Badbudgeter · 02/04/2023 08:07

Swearing in context is fine. Not a fan of it being used as punctuation where every other word is a swear.

I get why it’s annoying but there’s little you can do. I used to work in environmental services (bins/ grass cutting) in the local council and got really used to saying to the gobbier ones to shut up and get a fucking move so we can finish. Swearing was a badge of inclusivity in a weird way; meant you’re not going to dob them in to the supervisor.

junebirthdaygirl · 02/04/2023 08:12

Earlier in the year we were in a hotel in the Canaries and l can honestly say l never heard one swear word for 10 days. But the guests were mostly older so more of the ..not in public..type. And no shouting or loud conversations. All very civilised. What nationality are these? Are they younger folk?

Inauthentic · 02/04/2023 08:38

Perhaps those people are not a good sample of your average British Joes and Janes.

Perhaps this hotel attracts certain type of guests.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 02/04/2023 08:40

Drunken shouting would bother me.

I don't care about swear words.

Ellmau · 02/04/2023 08:42

I hate it. Also public drunkenness.

I find it very depressing that so many Brits abroad are like this.

usernameV2 · 02/04/2023 09:07

I'm Irish, we swear a lot, it doesn't bother me. Shouting is horrible though.

difficultdifficultlemondifficult · 02/04/2023 09:12

I love a good sweary conversation amongst friends, to myself if I'm pissed off or if the situation is justified with another adult. No need for shouting it annoying people though.

I would be irritated by shouting and lairy behaviour in public with or without swearing. There's a time and a place.

That's interesting, as I generally find that the more educated people are, the less likely they are to be bothered by swearing. That's not to say that educated people necessarily swear more, but I do think they're much less likely to be offended by it!

RampantIvy · 02/04/2023 10:15

I'm not offended by swearing, but swearing along with shouting and drunkenness doesn't sound like a relaxing holiday to me.
