God help me. I can hear dh snoring from here.

Just that. I’m sitting downstairs, with the door closed and I can hear him through the ceiling with the TV on. I turned it off to check, and it’s definitely the snoring from hell.
What shall I do? All suggestions welcome as long as they don’t land me in prison.

Do you have a spare room? If so, sleep in that.
That is what I will be doing tonight.

MargaretThursday · 01/04/2023 22:26

Clothes peg on the nose and a hard jab in the ribs.
Failing that book a hotel room for the night.

dragonbreaths · 01/04/2023 22:28

get some Airpods, the noise cancelling ones. You can have them in either ear and play nature type noises/ podcasts etc. I truly think they've saved DH from being assassinated in the night.

gluenotsoup · 01/04/2023 22:30

Unfortunately no spare room. Hard jab in the ribs it is. I might go and try to read my kindle for a bit and see if it stops. I know if I poke him he’ll turn over but not stop😬

Air pods a good call too. Do you think it’s a good defence?

DH was exactly the same but after me nagging him he got assessed for sleep apnea. It transpired he had a severe level of apnea and now uses a CPAP machine at night - bliss for me as no more snoring and the machine is so quiet it’s barely noticeable. Win win as he’s feeling better too.

Before that I could have easily stuck a peg on his nose.

Jellycats4life · 01/04/2023 22:34

I have the same problem OP. I often sit downstairs (I’m a night owl) listening to him snore from our bedroom above the living room.

Then I go to bed and I’m drowsy but can’t nod off because the snoring is like being nudged awake every few seconds. I lose hours and hours of sleep every single week.

No spare room.

How do people sleep wearing earbuds and headphones?

PotterLottery · 01/04/2023 22:35

My husband just bought the strips you stick on your nose and they work! I literally couldn't believe it. Had them on for around a week, he's only snored once that I've heard, and he was waking me up with his snoring before that.

CC4712 · 01/04/2023 22:36

Tell him to see his GP for a referral to the respiratory/sleep clinic- to check if its an anatomical cause, or something like sleep apnoea.

DH refused to believe he had an issue. I filmed his snoring- and the LONG pauses and after years, made the GP appointment for him. Long story short, he now has a CPAP machine. Its silent, he no longer sleeps in the day and has lost 20kg due to feeling more refreshed and energetic. He is hoping to no longer need the machine soon.

I am trying to wean myself off the earplugs I've had to sleep with for 10+ yrs! Get him seen because in vast majority of cases, something can be done!

BeckyBeehive · 01/04/2023 22:41

I feel your pain. DH and I have had separate bedrooms for years now, but that's only since the kids left home. Our problem is when we go on holiday to a hotel rather than self catering (when I can book a 2 bedroom place). I have to use earplugs and a headband with built in headphones to play white noise through. My husband has never been interested in trying any remedies because his snoring doesn't bother him.

gluenotsoup · 01/04/2023 22:44

I’ve bought the strips and sprays but they’re unused😬. I tell him all the time about it, but he just doesn’t know how bad it is. I nudged him a couple of days ago said stop, to which he replied he wasn’t asleep so how could he be snoring?? He definitely was. Sometimes it’s not bad, so could it still be apnea?

😂THIS is my DH. Oh Lordy. Like we're making up the snoring just for a laugh!

You've told him it's disturbing your sleep regularly and you've bought things to try and help... and he doesn't care enough about you to even try them?

He doesn't sound particularly kind tbh OP.

If something was disrupting my partners sleep then I would want to try stuff to improve it.

GymNewbie · 02/04/2023 00:02

Squeeze his nose and cover his mouth. When he gasps let go. Tell him to roll the fuck over or sleep on the couch.
Works for me 😉

justasking111 · 02/04/2023 00:09

OH said to son that I snored when he was home for a visit. The evening before son and I were watching TV dad had gone to bed. Son said is that dad snoring, yep he was lifting the roof. So when said dad the very next day said I snored, son had trouble keeping a straight face

I use earbud in one ear and listen to something on prime. I nod off then

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 02/04/2023 00:10

Air pods yes unless you are a side sleeper and then it's uncomfortable.

I have bought myself a headband/eye mask from amazon that has flat noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones in. It's been a lifesaver. I play calming music and sleep like a baby and the headphones don't dig in when I'm laid on my side.

Bakingwithmyboys · 02/04/2023 00:15

There is a Dr snore pack on Amazon that has a few things I've tried. The strips worked for me but I didn't like the fact it's 1 strip every night. There are also things called nose cones which I much prefer!

I can't believe he's not willing to try if you can hear him downstairs. That's what kind of did it for me, when DH told me that.

I remember many sleepless nights camping with my Dad as he was awful. Its very frustrating that there could be a quick fix.

Same here! Currently enjoying a night of peace without the dying argumentative warthog next to me as he's away overnight 🎉

Jitterybugs · 02/04/2023 00:19

If he’s refusing to believe you record a few mins audio clip on your phone and play it back to him in the morning. Encourage him to make a GP appointment and take the recording with him.

furryfrontbottom · 02/04/2023 00:39

White noise might help in the short term. Is he carrying excess weight? Overweight people are more likely to have sleep apnoea.

pinkpotatoez · 02/04/2023 00:44

Why is "I wasn't even asleep" always snorers favourite line😂 as if I've just decided to wake myself up and play a little April fools on you at 3 in the morning

Dillydollydingdong · 02/04/2023 00:49

My dp wears airpods at night, playing his fave music. Not to drown the sound of me snoring, just because he likes music. I don't know how he can sleep like that.

justasking111 · 02/04/2023 01:02

I wish I could send you a recording now. He has a cold so is exceptionally noisy 😂

spottygymbag · 02/04/2023 08:29

The Bose sleep buds are amazing. They block out snoring, overnight roadworks... everything. It's bliss. But they don't link to podcasts or music. Strictly the sleep/noise canceling sounds which is perfect for me otherwise I'd be up all night listening to audio books

YukoandHiro · 02/04/2023 08:32

My DH definitely has apnea. Not every night but sometimes he properly jolts himself awake as his breathing is so strictured. He basically just hates all medical intervention due to a whole long family history thing not worth going into here. I've given up hassling him. As long as I'm asleep first it doesn't wake me anymore.
