Have we time travelled? To the 1950s?

So far on here today we've had someone saying their black friend is absolutely fine with white people wearing fake dreads as fancy dress (for a Jamaican person!) and a whole thread of people saying it's absolutely fine for men to call women they don't know "darling""love""babe" and assorted other endearments. Really?

Why shouldn't a white person wear fake dreads? Black people have their hair straightened and bleach their skin lighter. So what? There's nothing wrong with that either.
And for people to call each other "dear" "darling" and "love" - it's meant kindly, to be friendly. You're a bit frosty aren't you? Lighten up, ffs.

This ^

Me Duck
Shortened to Duck in the Midlands

Love is very London. As is Darling. The man and lady in my local cafe both call be love and darling. I am not offended in any way.

Absolutely

The Manchester born raised and bred Pharmacist though uses "sweetheart", from time to time.

Yes and I've just been asked "And why have you applied for this role instead of wanting to be home with your family!"

IN AN INTERVIEW!!!

YouJustDoYou · 31/03/2023 14:20

You'd blow your lid if I told you what we as a mixed race family are okay with 😂

Dreamysaurus · 31/03/2023 14:20

I love being called Petal 😂

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 14:23

Just about every tradesman who’s ever visited this house has called my bloke “mate”. And me “love”. Don’t care, I just want the work done.

There was a programme on R4 earlier about cultural appropriation. It pointed out that Rasta is a religion, not a race and its adherents can easily be white. Apparently a white Jamaican can get into all sorts of trouble because some ignorant people assume he’s putting on his accent and taking the piss.

Laiste · 31/03/2023 14:35

Married to builder, loads of tradesman mates, loads of tradesmen round the house professionally as big build been going on for ages. Man to man it's all yes mate, no mate, tea mate? coffee mate? look at this mate, ok mate, mate mate matey matey mate mate mate mate! With the occasional boss, chief, me-duck (to DH) thrown in.

To me - Love, darling, sweetheart, me duck, me lovely, me lover, hun.

Don't mind any of it.

Laiste · 31/03/2023 14:38

Cultural appropriation - i get it. I admit it took a while to understand properly. But i do now. Thanks mainly to MN!

Riverlee · 31/03/2023 14:38

”No” is the answer to your question , although I love 50’s fashions.

BellePeppa · 31/03/2023 14:58

I’ll happily go back to the 1950s if it means people can actually buy a basic property without having to be a near millionaire. Beam me up Scotty!

NeedWineNow · 31/03/2023 15:14

As an East Ender who has always called people 'darlin' I haven't got a problem with anyone calling me anything similar including regional variations. Life's too short to worry frankly.

inamarina · 31/03/2023 15:15

As a white person I wouldn’t wear fake dreads, but it wouldn’t shock me if someone said their black friend actually didn’t mind people doing that. The friend is entitled to their opinion, no?

I wouldn’t mind a man calling me “darling” if it’s a regional word and is done in a neutral manner (i.e. not to belittle or patronise me somehow).

Dreamysaurus · 31/03/2023 14:20

I love being called Petal 😂

Petal is lovely 😊

SunshineGeorgie · 31/03/2023 15:19

Hardly 1950's!!

Any better examples?

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 31/03/2023 15:20

Among my brother (rip) and his friends, the c word was a term of endearment.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/03/2023 15:32

Well, at least we don't currently have sugar rationing.

JaneJeffer · 31/03/2023 15:41

There's a load of shite being posted today. I've clicked on so many threads and thought yeah right that happened.

Reddickyouless · 31/03/2023 15:45

Petal,Treacle and lover said over the last week
They are terms of endearment
Everyone wants to be offended at something

There is. I guess it’s the start of the school holidays. We’ve probably got a couple of weeks of this. 🙄

NeonBoomerang · 31/03/2023 15:48

"duck" isn't gender specific. You get older men calling other men "duck".

It apparently comes from the Norse word for "friend"

ModeratelyBetter · 31/03/2023 15:50

I'm not offended by men calling me darling etc. Really doesn't bother me.

I'm white so won't comment on the dreadlocks. I wouldn't wear fake ones as fancy dress anyway

MMMarmite · 31/03/2023 15:50

I've not seen the other thread, but "love" is a region thing surely. Totally normal to be called "love" that by a stranger of either sex around here. Depending on the interaction, it can be friendly, sympathetic, patronising or sarcastic like any other term.

Out on the streets / pub... then fine. In the workplace absolutely NOT!

JadeSeahorse · 31/03/2023 15:58

Before I retired I used to have a wonderful older male customer - a real, old fashioned Londoner - who used to call me Treacle.

I absolutely loved it! 🥰
