Easter eggs and Ramadan

Help!
I teach a small class of children and I was planning on collecting a little Easter egg each for them this morning as a gift for their hard work. 3 of my group are fasting for Ramadan and I don't want to leave them out! How do I do this?! They're amazing pupils and I love to show them how much I appreciate them.

They can take them home and eat them in the evening.

Just hand them out late in the day.

shard5 · 31/03/2023 05:53

That's lovely of you op.
I agree to hand them out just before the end of the day. It'll be a nice treat for them to look forward to.

Shesasuperfreak · 31/03/2023 05:55

Just buy generic chocolates.

Or something with dates in it as dates are traditionally used to break the fast. That could be date cookies or just stuffed dates.

Baklava is good too. If you have a Middle Eastern shop they have lots of budget options otherwise Amazon is good.

Children get too much crap (palm oil with a bit of cocoa) from everyone - family, friends, neighbours, now teachers too.
Get them something else - e.g. a basket with various fruit and everyone gets one, or a colouring book or something.

GreyCarpet · 31/03/2023 06:42

You know that muslims break their fast at the end of each day don't you..?

bellac11 · 31/03/2023 06:45

Children dont generally tend to do the fasting, although some do

But as others say, its only sunrise to sunset anyway

tempester28 · 31/03/2023 06:45

Give them the easter eggs and they can have them when not fasting.

BooksAndHooks · 31/03/2023 06:47

My nephews had a pencil with a bunny rubber on the end at their Easter hunt. They were all so excited coming home with them and it was something different and everyone could have one no worries about allergies etc.

Or what about splitting up some of the multi Easter craft / activity packs so they can make something.

justasmalltownmum · 31/03/2023 06:47

Don't buy dates! They will have lots at home already and the date cookies are not that nice.

Just give them the same as everyone else. And they can eat it later

DrHousecuredme · 31/03/2023 06:47

Sorry @7Worfs but your post did make me smile, we actually had vegetable day in school last week in place of the usual chocolaty Easter cooking. It didn't go down well... several small children with WTF faces. I've caved and we're doing a little Easter egg hunt today.
OP it should be absolutely fine to wrap the chocolates up and send them home. They'll probably eat them at the end of the day.
I accidentally did iced biscuits with an after school club in Ramadan, they weren't phased at all, just took them home.

GoodVibesHere · 31/03/2023 06:55

Look there are only so many dates a person can eat just buy an Easter egg.

Clarabellawilliamson · 31/03/2023 06:59

Please don't give the rest of the class Easter eggs and your fasting children dates! Give them the egg!

Rowthe · 31/03/2023 07:00

Give everyone the same

LottleEsme · 31/03/2023 07:02

Thanks everyone - I'm grateful.
Yes, I know they break their fast in the early hours - I just feel a bit cruel giving them something edible when they can't eat it straight away - don't want to tempt them cruelly!

They're teenagers - should have said but I always try and alter a few little details just in case!

thegrain · 31/03/2023 07:03

I wouldn't bother giving anyone anything tbh they will get enough

euff · 31/03/2023 07:04

I think the egg is fine and they can eat it later. Dd is 12 and Muslim she'd love to receive an Easter egg with her classmates and eat it in the evening.

Clarabellawilliamson · 31/03/2023 07:05

Depending on where in the country you are, Iftar is only at about 7.30pm tonight, it's not too long to wait!

Greengrassgone · 31/03/2023 07:14

Are pencils or rubbers not easier rather than food?

Are Muslim teens who are fasting be likely to get any Easter eggs at all?

Haha 😊
You say that, but last Halloween I put fruit together with the sweets in the bowl for trick or treat, and the plums and apples were more popular than the sweets.

OP if they are teenagers I retract my statement, I was imagining young children and remember how miffed I was when my 2yo came back from nursery with a giant chocolate reindeer.

fairgame84 · 31/03/2023 07:27

Get them an egg. DH is Muslim and likes an easter egg.
Don't get them dates as they are nothing special. They break fast by eating 7 dates anyway, or they do in DH's culture.

This.

I'd be (mildly) annoyed with a teacher giving out crap food, it undermines all the healthy messaging schools do.

MaireadMcSweeney · 31/03/2023 07:28

They are around food all day so don't worry about that. They can take the egg home!

These are teenagers. They live on crap in general. A bit more isn't something to get even mildly annoyed about.

I disagree, but that is fine. I'm now (mildly) annoyed by you being the reaction police. Newsflash: not everyone thinks the same way.
