If you could retrain as anything what would it be?

I’m 39 and self employed but I’m working in a dying industry. It’s got me thinking about retraining but I’m at a complete loss as what I could retrain as.
I have skills but suspect they are out of date now. I think I’d have to start from scratch which terrifies me.

if you could retrain as anything what would it be?

I think being a foley artist would be really fun and interesting.

Every few months when I have a bad day at work I look into various new careers and so far I've half thought about a solicitor, midwife, project manager, software developer, web developer.

There's more I've looked into but those are what I can think of off the top of my head as I've looked into that many potential careers I've lost track Grin

Just to say: I was your age when I decided to retrain (in a career that required a lengthy retrain) and it's the best thing I've ever done. Be brave!

One of the heritage craft skills from The Repair Shop, the wood, painting or ceramics restoration in particular. Sadly I have neither the skills nor the patience.

Would love to be an Occupational Therapist

Snugglemonkey · 28/03/2023 21:27

I would like to be a vet.

Appin · 28/03/2023 21:44

I've spent a lot of time considering retraining in HR, but not sure what route to take, and would inevitably earn a lot less than I earn now. Starting to feel like I could take the hit though!

DanceMonkey19 · 28/03/2023 21:51

I'd love to be a scriptwriter for a TV soap. But more realistically an occupational therapist. Was a primary school teacher and the good bits were fab, but far too much work outside of classroom hours.

emmetgirl · 28/03/2023 21:52

Forensic psychologist

Either an educational psychologist or a hypnotherapist.

Please do, we have such a shortage of Educational Psychologists.

Me, I would move from education to a landscape gardener.🌳

Police Officer. Or scene of crime officer.

Forensics. Problem is you need a car and to get lessons and run a vehicle you practically have to remortgage now.

So no driving for me as it's totally unaffordable so no career in forensics :(

It used to be that the way to get into a forensics job was to get a foot in the door of the police force and then wait for an internal vacancy. Training was on the job but very competitive. My bosses weren’t keen on forensic degrees. They preferred single sciences, but most of us didn’t have relevant degrees at all, we just passed their interview and aptitude test.

KohlaParasaurus · 28/03/2023 22:25

I'd still go to medical school, but if I'd had a crystal ball in 1990 I'd have chosen a hospital specialty and stuck with it instead of going into general practice.

KohlaParasaurus · 28/03/2023 22:29

And if I was 39 now and looking for a complete change of career that's unlikely to become obsolete I'd train to be a plumber.
