Xavier

I always thought it was pronounced "Zay-vee-ar"

But I've heard people saying "ex-zay-vee-ar"

Which is correct or can you say either?

Zay-vee-er

WeeOrcadian · 28/03/2023 19:09

Zay - vee - er. I worked with a bloke who called his boy this, pronounced it like that ^

Pigriver · 28/03/2023 19:09

There are 3 different pronunciations depending on whether you're French, Spanish or American! British seem to use Zavier which is more French but with terrible pronunciation!

Whatthetrolley · 28/03/2023 19:09

Ds has a friend Xavier and he always calls him Zav-ya

EspeciallyDedicated · 28/03/2023 19:12

Xsaveeyay

Whatthetrolley · 28/03/2023 19:12

Actually add an e on the end of the Zave (so like save)

MischiefTheChicken · 28/03/2023 19:15

@SwedishEdith really? The pronunciation has changed over time then. I knew several people who attended SFX 20ish years ago and it was pronounced Zay-vyuh (to rhyme with Saviour) when said in full

Meredusoleil · 28/03/2023 19:16

English = Ex-zay-vee-er

French = Zav-ee-eh

Spanish = Khav-ee-air

That's from my experience anyway!

DecommissionedVag · 28/03/2023 19:17

Za-vee-ay

Zav - ee - ay

correct

Greensleevevssnotnose · 28/03/2023 19:19

I have a Jewish friend Xavier and it is Zaviour like Saviour

ODFOx · 28/03/2023 19:19

The only time I've ever heard of it pronounced 'Ex saviour' is in the X-men movies so I presume that it's an American pronunciation.
Zaviour (UK)
Zaviey (France)

MajorCarolDanvers · 28/03/2023 19:21

Ha-vee-err

lljkk · 28/03/2023 19:23

MissBattleaxe · 28/03/2023 22:10

DS's mate is ZAV-ee-uh.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/03/2023 22:13

Zav-ee-ay

BitOutOfPractice · 28/03/2023 22:14

Er in French is pronounced ay, surely.

Ichosetheredpill · 28/03/2023 22:15

I would always say it the French way “Za-vee-ay”. That’s how the Xavier I knew pronounced it.

evergreen2 · 28/03/2023 22:17

Zay-vee-ah

I don't say it either of those ways.

ZAH-vee-ay

SacreBleeurgh · 28/03/2023 22:19

Hav-ee-ay

Or, at a push, Zaviour to rhyme with saviour, but with a bit of a twitch.

Anyone saying Ex-ay-vee-ur can get firmly in the bin.

We have X-men to thank for that last pronunciation
