Roughly what percentage of your income goes on your mortgage?

We're looking at buying and just curious what % of your combined monthly income after tax (assuming you're a joint-income household) you use to furnish your mortgage?

I'm assuming about 30%, does that sound right?

30% sounds good. I have 0% as it’s finished. When I started out it was 50%

Ligglepiggle · 28/03/2023 17:28

16% I’m a lone parent so sole mortgage

BreviloquentBastard · 28/03/2023 17:33

About 20% or so, was higher when we first started out though.

14% but overpaying so 20%

Minfilia · 28/03/2023 17:36

25% but soon to be mortgage free!

Oncetheystartschool · 28/03/2023 17:36

17% of joint net income. We spend 43% of net income on childcare so can't afford a bigger mortgage

Boomboom22 · 28/03/2023 17:38

22% of net. Used to be higher though!

DrMarciaFieldstone · 28/03/2023 17:39

14%

House was originally bought on one salary.

Drifta · 28/03/2023 17:41

It's varied massively over the years. 30% sounds doable but do stress test it, especially if you have substantial childcare costs. If you're currently renting that gives you a good benchmark.

We borrowed quite a bit less than the bank were prepared to lend us, which was another reassurance we could manage it.

Mangolist · 28/03/2023 17:43

Around 25% I reckon

RoseBucket · 28/03/2023 17:47

48%

Dacadactyl · 28/03/2023 17:49

Ours is roughly 16%.

2 salaries (1 x PT and 1 x FT)

HippeePrincess · 28/03/2023 17:50

25% net income plus the same again on fixed house related bills.

owiz · 28/03/2023 17:52

Currently 15% but will be 25% when we remortgage due to interest rates and remortgaging HTB (if we choose to still).

dietcokelime · 28/03/2023 17:59

15% currently - will see what happens with the remortgage this year!

Asdf12345 · 28/03/2023 18:02

Ours varies a lot. This month it will be <10%, when we took it out it would have been about 25%.

BeachBlondey · 28/03/2023 18:04

Ours is 4%, but we over pay, which works out at 9%

But we only have 3.5 years left to go on the mortgage. We are 53 & 50 years old though!

CheeseMcKnees · 28/03/2023 18:05

9.6%

MintJulia · 28/03/2023 18:07

17%. I've only got 2 years to go.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 28/03/2023 18:10

Around 25%. I've only got it last year.

lucylantern · 28/03/2023 18:10

18% but we usually overpay each month to try to bring down the (ridiculously long) term so it’s more like 25%.

pettysquabbles · 28/03/2023 18:20

I've paid it off so zero!

Persipan · 28/03/2023 18:22

About 20% but that's on one income (single parent)

MissLucyLiu · 28/03/2023 18:23

About 20% of income not including bonus. Won't ever assume you can get a bonus every single year!

Azandme · 28/03/2023 18:25

Single parent, 22%.
