Roughly what percentage of your income goes on your mortgage?

We're looking at buying and just curious what % of your combined monthly income after tax (assuming you're a joint-income household) you use to furnish your mortgage?

I'm assuming about 30%, does that sound right?

OP posts:

12%

OldTinHat · 28/03/2023 18:27

Before I sold my house 5yrs ago, it was 65%, sole parent.

FraterculaArctica · 28/03/2023 18:28

About 19%. But we are still spending nearly double that on childcare.

14% of our joint household income.

Runnerduck34 · 28/03/2023 18:33

Just remortgaged and its 20%.
I think 30% is doable depending on your other outgoings and commitments.
Need to look at bigger picture- childcare, debts, bills, travel costs etc to judge.

PretzelBite · 28/03/2023 18:40

40% for us currently - only been in the house 2 years and high interest rates

Janedoe82 · 28/03/2023 18:42

MumOf2workOptions · 28/03/2023 18:43

Joint Income £3000 per month
Mortgage was £850 now £1200 😱

Not ideal but we manage just have to be careful

CocoFifi · 28/03/2023 18:44

0% as our priority was to pay off our mortgage, which we did at age 40

PositiveLife · 28/03/2023 18:44

About 17%, but I'm a single parent so didn't want to stretch myself too much.

Jojobees · 28/03/2023 18:45

24%. But we over pay to 27%. It’s hard but doable.

Pinkplasticbathcup · 28/03/2023 18:45

25%, and childcare costs about the same. We are still skint!!

milkshakeandchips5 · 28/03/2023 18:46

22% currently, expect it to go up to 35% when we have to remortgage at the end of the year. Doable but not enjoyable.

TwoBlueFish · 28/03/2023 18:48

About 40% at the moment, have about 5 years left. We do have savings that could pay off about two thirds of the mortgage but our mortgage interest rate is lower than the savings rate and we have 2 years left on our fix.

PawMaw · 28/03/2023 18:48

9% ours will be but planning to overpay so probably closer to 20%

manontroppo · 28/03/2023 18:50

About 33% of joint take home.

40%. Too high especially at the moment. Currently on mat leave too, so we're on a tight budget.
